Sustainability in the Water Energy Food Nexus (Hardcover): Anik Bhaduri, Claudia Ringler, Ines Dombrowsky, Rabi Mohtar, Waltina... Sustainability in the Water Energy Food Nexus (Hardcover)
Anik Bhaduri, Claudia Ringler, Ines Dombrowsky, Rabi Mohtar, Waltina Scheumann
R2,707 Discovery Miles 27 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It is beyond doubt that the interconnectedness between food, energy, water security and environmental sustainability exists and is getting amplified with increased globalization. It has been recognized that efforts to address only one part of a systemic problem by neglecting other inherently interlinked aspects may not lead to desirable and sustainable outcomes. In this perspective, policy- and decision- making requires a nexus approach that reduces trade-offs and builds synergies across sectors, and helps to reduce costs and increase benefits for humans and nature compared to independent approaches to the management of water, energy, food and the environment. In the past, work related to the Nexus has looked at the interactions between water and food or water and energy, but there has been a reluctance to bring forward a broader systematic perspective that captures the multiple sectors and resource dependencies while understanding its cost to the environment if we neglect these linkages. This book is a compilation of thirteen papers published previously as a special issue of Water International, contains significant pieces of work on the W-E-F nexus focusing on relevant tools, solutions and governance at local and broader human scales.

This book focuses on the political tensions between the environmental objectives and socio-economic aspects of sustainable development. The collection provides an introduction to interlinkages, synergies and trade-offs between the ‘green’ and other goals, such as gender equality and economic growth. It also considers related goals on cities and partnerships as crucial for implementing environmentally sound sustainability. Identifying governance failures and responsibilities, it advocates for a shift towards cooperative economics and politics for the common good.

Water for Food Security - Challenges for Pakistan (Paperback): Claudia Ringler, Arif Anwar Water for Food Security - Challenges for Pakistan (Paperback)
Claudia Ringler, Arif Anwar
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pakistan's water management is at a critical watershed. Water shortages are growing rapidly as a result of growing demand across all water-using sectors. Rapid population growth, from 175 million people in 2010 to an estimated 236 million by 2030 and 280 million by 2050, and international food-price spikes create pressure to increase agricultural production of staples; but demand for cash crops is also growing rapidly to raise rural incomes and generate rural employment to absorb the relatively young, rapidly growing rural population. Water management is also increasingly affected by climate change - including an increased number of flood and drought events - and by growing energy shortages, which affect how water is being sourced and used. Last but not least, Pakistan's political situation is fragile, which has reduced incentives to invest in enhanced agricultural water (and other) technologies. How Pakistan addresses these challenges will be decisive for its future water and food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. It will also affect water and food outcomes globally, due to the interconnectedness of global food trade. This book is geared toward researchers, policymakers, and investors in the water, energy and food sectors who want to learn about key drivers that affect Pakistan's water and food security and have an interest to contribute to water and related solutions, several of which are presented in the book. This book was published as a special issue of Water International.

Water for Food Security, Nutrition and Social Justice (Hardcover): Lyla Mehta, Theib Oweis, Claudia Ringler, Barbara Schreiner,... Water for Food Security, Nutrition and Social Justice (Hardcover)
Lyla Mehta, Theib Oweis, Claudia Ringler, Barbara Schreiner, Shiney Varghese
R4,135 Discovery Miles 41 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the first comprehensive effort to bring together Water, Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) in a way that goes beyond the traditional focus on irrigated agriculture. Apart from looking at the role of water and sanitation for human well-being, it proposes alternative and more locally appropriate ways to address complex water management and governance challenges from the local to global levels against a backdrop of growing uncertainties. The authors challenge mainstream supply-oriented and neo-Malthusian visions that argue for the need to increase the land area under irrigation in order to feed the world's growing population. Instead, they argue for a reframing of the debate concerning production processes, waste, food consumption and dietary patterns whilst proposing alternative strategies to improve water and land productivity, putting the interests of marginalized and disenfranchized groups upfront. The book highlights how accessing water for FSN can be challenging for small-holders, vulnerable and marginalized women and men, and how water allocation systems and reform processes can negatively affect local people's informal rights. The book argues for the need to improve policy coherence across water, land and food and is original in making a case for strengthening the relationship between the human rights to water and food, especially for marginalized women and men. It will be of great interest to practitioners, students and researchers working on water and food issues.

Global Change: Impacts on Water and food Security (Paperback, 2010 ed.): Claudia Ringler, Asit K Biswas, Sarah Cline Global Change: Impacts on Water and food Security (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Claudia Ringler, Asit K Biswas, Sarah Cline
R2,954 Discovery Miles 29 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, a greater level of integration of the world economy and an opening of national markets to trade has impacted virtually all areas of society. The process of globalization has the potential to generate long-term benefits for developing countries, including enhanced technology and knowledge transfers and new fina- ing options supporting agricultural and economic development. However, risks of political and economic instability, increased inequality, and losses in agricultural income and production for countries that subsidize their agricultural and other e- nomic sectors threaten to offset potential benefits. Globalization can also have a profound impact on the water sector - in terms of allocation and use of water - and thus on food security as well. Other global change processes, particularly climate change, are also likely to have far-reaching impacts on water and food security, and societies around the world. To discuss these issues in-depth, the International Food Policy Research Institute, the Third World Centre for Water Management, Mexico, and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE), Costa Rica, held a three-day International Conference on "Globalization and Trade: Implications for Water and Food Security," at CATIE's Turrialba, Costa Rica, headquarters under the auspices of the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food in 2005. The workshop set out to identify the major risks and emerging issues facing developing countries related to global economic and environmental change impacts on water and food security.
