Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. Much of her childhood was spent in Cheshire, in Knutsford, a town she would immortalise as Cranford.

The Complete Poems of Emily Bronte is a collection assembled both from past publications featuring Emily Bronte's works, and private collections discovered after her death by members of her family. Although her verse compositions are overshadowed to this day by her phenomenally successful novel Wuthering Heights, they remain worthy examples of the Romantic era form. The poems situated at the conclusion went unpublished for decades and did not appear in print until 1908. Emily Bronte was a private character, who took very little interest in promoting her works to the public. As such, many of these poems never appeared in print until years or even decades after her death in 1848. The youngest of the well-known Bront siblings, Anne Bront (1820-1849) grew up drawing and writing poetry in secret. As a child, Anne spent countless hours on the Yorkshire moors with her sister, Emily, creating an imaginary world called Gondal. Anne attended school at age fifteen, and there she experienced an episode of spiritual crisis, which is evidenced in many of her poems. She later worked as a governess before collaborating with her sisters, Emily and Charlotte, on a collection of poetry in 1846. The sisters used pen names to publish their work - Anne wrote as Acton Bell - to avoid unfair judgment as women writers. Although the collection sold poorly, Anne found a market for her own poetry, and was published in Fraser's Magazine. Unfortunately, her deeply insightful collection of work was cut short by an early death, and is therefore often overshadowed by that of her sisters.
