The Akhbar al-dawla al-saljuqiyya is one of the key primary
documents on the history of Western Persia and Iraq in the 11th and
12th centuries. This book provides an accessible English
translation and commentary on the text, making available to a new
readership this significant work on the pre-modern history of the
Middle East and the Turkish peoples. The text is a chronicle of the
Seljuq dynasty as it emerged within the Iranian lands in the 11th
and 12th centuries, dominating the Middle Eastern lands, from
Turkey and Syria to Iran and eastern Afghanistan. During this
formative period in the central and eastern Islamic lands, they
inaugurated a pattern of Turkish political and military dominance
of the Middle East and beyond, from Egypt to India, in some cases
well into the 20th century. Shedding light on many otherwise
obscure aspects of the political history of the region, the book
provides a more detailed context for the political history of the
wider area. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of
Middle Eastern history and is an important addition to the existing
literature on the Seljuq dynasty.

First Published in 1995. Published a few years after the author's
death this text offers explanatory notes for his translation of The
Thousand and One Nights. The editor Lane had utilized as the main
basis for this the Arabic text printed at the press of Biilaq in
the suburbs of Cairo established by the Pasha Muhammad 'Ali, but
had enriched it by a copious commentary. Since the stories making
up the Nights illustrate almost the whole gamut of public and
settled domestic life in the Arab Middle Ages, from the opulent
surroundings of Caliphs and Sultans to the humblest dwellings of
petty tradesmen and bazaar artisans, Lane was able to construct on
these foundations a remarkably detailed picture of society as it
functioned in the urban centres of Mediaeval Islam.
First Published in 1995. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor &
Francis, an informa company.
"L'Encyclopedie de l'Islam (New Edition) sets out the present state
of our knowledge of the Islamic World. It is a unique and
invaluable reference tool, an essential key to understanding the
world of Islam, and the authoritative source not only for the
religion, but also for the believers and the countries in which
they live.
It contains articles on distinguished Muslims, on tribes and
dynasties, on crafts and sciences, on political and religious
institutions, on the geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of the
various countries as well as on the history, topography and
monuments of the major towns and cities. In its geographical and
historical scope it encompasses the old Arabo-Islamic empire, Iran,
Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Indonesia, the Ottoman
Empire and all other Islamic countries.
The New Edition is published in double fascicules of 112 pages.
Eight double fascicules make up one volume. Upon completion of a
volume, covers and prelims are supplied for binding.
The "Glossary & Index of Terms is, next to the "Index of Proper
Names and the "Index of Subjects the third key to the vast corpus
of knowledge contained in "The Encyclopaedia of Islam.
The "Glossary & Index of Terms, now brought up to date with the
data of volume nine of the main work (1997, 920 pages), deals with
the terms in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and other languages or
dialects of the Islamic world.
Especially the listing of terms which are not given as a headword
in "The Encyclopaedia itself, but are discussed in the course of an
article - and consequently hard to be found - will be of value to
scholars and non-specialists alike.
Highly recommended for use with "The Encyclopaedia of Islam.
