With its application-oriented approach, the fifth EMEA edition of Statistics for Business and Economics teaches students the core concepts of statistics in the fields of business, management, and economics, with the needs of the non-mathematician in mind. The authors interweave statistical methodology with applications of data analysis to enrich students’ understanding of how statistics underpin problem-solving and decision-making. Students develop a computational foundation and learn to use various techniques before moving on to statistical application and interpretation. At the end of each section, exercises focus on computation and the use of formulas, while application exercises require students to apply what they have learnt to real-world problems.

Room after room and image after image, readers will discover how star stylist Colin King works his magic when arranging objects on coffee tables, mantels, bookshelves, bedside tables, windowsills, and more. Through a series of anecdotes and visual essays, Colin unpacks his intuitive and deeply personal process, meditating on scale, proportion, palette, texture, and more. As he shares, it s not about buying new things, but rather about dusting off old favourites and seeing them with fresh eyes looking beyond intended use to discover deeper meaning in the everyday. It s about being decisive in the moment while giving yourself permission to change your mind. And it s about trying new arrangements again and again, finding out what the moment isn t, until you find out what the moment is. There s always the element of chance. Styling, readers will discover, is a metaphor for life and a daily practice to be honed over time. Resistance to malaria. Blue eyes. Lactose tolerance. What do all of these traits have in common? Every one of them has emerged in the last 10,000 years.Scientists have long believed that the great leap forward" that occurred some 40,000 to 50,000 years ago in Europe marked end of significant biological evolution in humans. In this stunningly original account of our evolutionary history, top scholars Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending reject this conventional wisdom and reveal that the human species has undergone a storm of genetic change much more recently. Human evolution in fact accelerated after civilization arose, they contend, and these ongoing changes have played a pivotal role in human history. They argue that biology explains the expansion of the Indo-Europeans, the European conquest of the Americas, and European Jews' rise to intellectual prominence. In each of these cases, the key was recent genetic change: adult milk tolerance in the early Indo-Europeans that allowed for a new way of life, increased disease resistance among the Europeans settling America, and new versions of neurological genes among European Jews.Ranging across subjects as diverse as human domestication, Neanderthal hybridization, and IQ tests, Cochran and Harpending's analysis demonstrates convincingly that human genetics have changed and can continue to change much more rapidly than scientists have previously believed. A provocative and fascinating new look at human evolution that turns conventional wisdom on its head, The 10,000 Year Explosion reveals the ongoing interplay between culture and biology in the making of the human race.
No matter what influences a woman to end a pregnancy, the physical, psychological, and spiritual side effects are real and not always anticipated. Feelings of guilt, shame, and grief become a heavy burden, and many women feel that they will never be free, that no one understands, that God will never forgive them. But there is hope. Linda Cochrane has been there. With an understanding spirit and a gentle hand, she guides hurting women to bring their emotional scars "out of the dark past and into his holy light" where true and lasting healing can take place. Cochrane delves into the Scriptures to offer help with issues such as relief, denial, anger, forgiveness, depression, letting go, and acceptance. For every woman yearning for the peace of God's forgiveness, this study can be the first step to healing and wholeness.

The book is a comprehensive how-to manual which systematically teaches Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) skills in a way which its competitors do not. Given its systematic logical training sequence, case stories and examples, it can be used by graduate students and post graduate mental health professionals alike who are just starting out to learn the method. The book is comprehensive in that it covers ancillary topics such as working with others including parents and teachers who support the child in therapy, ethics and diversity issues, Filial Family Therapy (an extension of CCPT for parent-child interventions) and as such it should also appeal to those who have an introductory knowledge of CCPT. Finally, given it is like a self-contained training program, our book is designed to be professor friendly and is especially useful for university on-line based counseling degree programs (and has already been adopted by one such program) and also used successfully for intensive CCPT courses (during the pandemic) in graduate training on-line. Some unique selling points include that the book offers: * Highly practical, skills-based guidance for novice and experienced mental health practitioners (counselors and play therapists) who are wanting to learn how to apply or improve applications of CCPT to help the children they serve. * Extensive realistic case stories that allow readers to see the applications of specific CCPT skills and to better understand and explain concepts in child counseling and psychotherapy. * Ancillary topics such as working with parents and teachers, ethics, diversity issues, Filial Therapy (an extension of Child-Centered Play Therapy for parent-child interventions) and up-to-date literature review. * A focus on the therapeutic relationship as the primary key to positive change for child clients and an emphasis on the self-development of the play therapist or counselor to be "the best toy in the playroom" (the most effective therapeutic agent) in child psychotherapy.

Religious crosses the spheres of both the private life and the public institution. In a liberal democracy, public and private interests and goals prove to be inseparable. Clarke Cochran's interdisciplinary study brings political theory and the sociology of religion together in a fresh interpretation of liberal culture. First published in 1990, this analysis begins with a reassessment of the nature of the "public" and the "private" in relation to the political. The controversy over religion and politics is examined in light of such contested issues of political life as sexuality, abortion, and the changing nature of the family. Clarifying a number of debates central to contemporary society, this timely reissue will be of particular value to students with an interest in the relationship between religious, society, and politics.

Egyptian education is a central, social and economic force in the Middle East. For hundreds of years Al Azhar University has been the centre of Islamic thinking and education. More recently Egypt became the leader in secular education as Mohammed Ali established the first medical, veterinarian, engineering and accounting schools in the Middle East. Nasser expanded Egyptian educational leadership by providing free education for Muslem students from neighbouring countries. The extensive exportation of Egyptian educators to initiate and educate in schools and universities throughout the Arab speaking world has shaped the secular and religious leaders of those countries. This book traces the history of Egyptian education over the last hundred years and highlights the key factors which have given Egyptian education its particular quality and influence within the Arab world. First published 1986.
Crime and Criminal Justice provides students with a comprehensive and engaging introduction to the study of criminology by taking an interdisciplinary approach to explaining criminal behaviour and criminal justice. The book is divided into two parts, which address the two essential bases that form the discipline of criminology. Part One describes, discusses and evaluates a range of theoretical approaches that have offered explanations for crime, drawing upon contributions from the disciplines of sociology, psychology, and biology. It then goes on to apply these theories to specific forms of criminality. Part Two offers an accessible but detailed review of the major philosophical aims and sociological theories of punishment, and examines the main areas of the contemporary criminal justice system ? including the police, the courts and judiciary, prisons, and more recent approaches to punishment. Presenting a clear and thorough review of theoretical thinking on crime, and of the context and current workings of the criminal justice system, this book provides students with an excellent grounding in the study of criminology.
During the last 20 years, governments around the world have paid increasing attention to the recruitment, preparation, and retention of teachers. Teacher supply and teacher quality have become significant policy issues, taken up by policy-makers at the highest levels. This is because teachers are now seen by many governments as the lynch-pin of educational, economic and social reform. This volume grew out of a recognition by the Editors of the growing significance of teacher education policy and a curiosity about international trends and differences. The book brings together nine papers from leading academics around the world: from the UK (England and Scotland), the USA, Australia, Singapore and Belgium, plus a joint paper comparing Namibia and the USA. Taken together, the papers reveal the complexities and contradictions of international trends. On the one hand, they demonstrate that there is indeed a common direction of travel along the lines encouraged by international bodies such as the OECD. At the same time however, the papers also reveal important differences among countries in terms of how they are addressing common aspirations as well as some apparent contradictions within the policies of individual nations. This book was based on the special issue of Teachers and Teaching.
The Handbook of Research on Teacher Education was initiated to ferment change in education based on solid evidence. The publication of the First Edition was a signal event in 1990. While the preparation of educators was then - and continues to be - the topic of substantial discussion, there did not exist a codification of the best that was known at the time about teacher education. Reflecting the needs of educators today, the Third Edition takes a new approach to achieving the same purpose. Beyond simply conceptualizing the broad landscape of teacher education and providing comprehensive reviews of the latest research for major domains of practice, this edition: stimulates a broad conversation about foundational issues; brings multiple perspectives to bear; provides new specificity to topics that have been undifferentiated in the past; and includes diverse voices in the conversation. The Editors, with an Advisory Board, identified nine foundational issues and translated them into a set of focal questions: What's the Point?: The Purposes of Teacher Education What Should Teachers Know? Teacher Capacities: Knowledge, Beliefs, Skills, and Commitments Where Should Teachers Be Taught? Settings and Roles in Teacher Education Who Teaches? Who Should Teach? Teacher Recruitment, Selection, and Retention Does Difference Make a Difference? Diversity and Teacher Education How Do People Learn to Teach? Who's in Charge? Authority in Teacher Education How Do We Know What We Know? Research and Teacher Education What Good is Teacher Education? The Place of Teacher Education in Teachers' Education Co-Published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group and the Association of Teacher Educators. The Association ofTeacher Educators (ATE) is an individual membership organization devoted solely to the improvement of teacher education both for school-based and post secondary teacher educators. driven by the increasing wealth of countries like Taiwan, South
Korea and Malaysia, and by the huge populations of China, India and
Indonesia -the first second and fourth biggest countries in the
works. Despite the significance of the tourism industry in this
area it is still under researched. |
