Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of Illustration in
children's literature. Many of the earliest children's books,
particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now
extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working
to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality,
colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works
can delight another generation of children.
s'embrassant, souvent, tres souvent.

Sophie Rostopchina, the Comtesse de Segur, was born in St.
Petersburg, Russia, in 1799. She wrote her first novel at the age
of 58, and continued to write novels and stories for children and
young people. Her most well-known novel, "Les Malheurs de Sophie"
("Sophie's Misfortunes") is about a young French girl who lives
with her parents in a castle in the French countryside. The
Comtesse died on February 9, 1874 in Paris.
This illustrated collection includes the short stories "Histoire
de Blondine, de Bonne-Biche et de Beau-Minon" ("The Story of
Blondine, Bonne-Biche, and Beau-Minon"), "Le Bon Petit Henri"
("Good Little Henry"), "Histoire de la Princesse Rosette" ("The
Princess Rosette"), "La Petite Souris Grise" ("The Little Grey
Mouse"), and "Ourson." The illustrations were done by Virginia
Frances Sterrett for a 1920 American edition.

1903. Forty illustrations. In this book a donkey tells the story of
his life and adventures, because, as he says: I want you to treat
all of us donkeys kindly, and to remember that we are often much
more sensible than some human beings. A charming, witty children's
story.

This second volume of the "Old French Fairy Tales" by Sophie
Rostopchine, Comtesse de Segur (1799-1874) brings us back into the
distant realm of the Queen of Fairies and the King of Genii.
Luxuriously illustrated by Virginia Frances Sterrett (1900-1931),
"The Little Gray Mouse" and "Ourson" keep testifying until today
that good old moral values and, above all, love are the best
response and the mightiest weapon against all evil, natural or
supernatural. In "The Little Gray Mouse," by the power of love,
Rosalie is cured of "her greatest fault" curiosity. Also true love,
through its gift of seeing beyond the appearances, is the magical
key that changes a cruel destiny into a prosperous future for
Ourson and his Violette. Not from this world? Not in these times?
Maybe. But then again, why not? Along with the first volume of the
"Old French Fairy Tales," this book is part of the "Vintage books -
restored" collection.
