This book presents around 80 briefly described cases which
illuminate the accumulated experience in utilizing and managing
crop genetic diversity in farmers' fields both in the South and the
North. These experiences illustrate the conflict which has been
thought to exist between crop conservation and development, and
contribute to the understanding of the opportunities that are
offered by new approaches and activities in this field. There are
frequent similarities between problems in the South and the North,
and the book presents the experiences and perspectives of farmers,
genebanks, plant breeders, seed programs and NGOs involved in crop
development and conservation. The authors analyze the experiences
in the context of new approaches in local and global Plant Genetic
Resource (PGR) management being tried by both the formal and
informal sector. The last part of the book suggests guidelines for
future development in PGR management. It discusses the implications
of integrated and adaptive management approaches in PGR management,
and the need to rethink the institutional organization required to
bring about changes which can help farmers and professionals in PGR
management to resist the pressures of a range of global forces. This
book presents a very diverse and rich array of experiences and in
effect proposes a synthesis of what have been taken to be
conflicting views of conservation and development.
This handbook covers a range of issues relating to local seed
supply systems, including participatory plant breeding, and both
technical and practical information on seed production and variety
maintenance. It suggests approaches and methods to support on-farm
seed production by small-scale farmers in developing countries.;The
first part of the book describes the functioning of local seed
systems and discusses their strengths, limitations and
possibilities for improvement. The editors discuss issues of
genetic diversity and "in situ" conservation, farmers' rights and
legislation. The cases presented illustrate the functioning of
local seed systems and experiences with improving them.;The second
part contains technical information on seed production, selection,
storage and distribution, and varietal maintenance and improvement
of different groups of important food crops, which can be applied
and implemented at the level of small-scale farming.; The third
part contains practical guidelines about how researchers and
agriculturalists might carry out surveys to investigate local seed
systems and their limitations, and how they can involve interested
farmers in practical experimentation t
"Research in Action" engages with the challenges a researcher faces
when wanting to live up to meet the challenges of contemporary
science and contribute to innovation and social change. This
ambition to contribute to change raises many questions. How to
define the main target group of the research? What role does this
group play in the research? Which methods of data collection are
most appropriate? Who are the commissioners of the research and do
their interests match with those of the prime target group? How to
deal with power relationships in research situations? What do these
issues mean for the relation of researcher with the people in the
researched situation? And, last but not least, what does it all
imply for the researcher him- or herself? These questions have to be
dealt with in situations in which the design and organization of
the research is still open but also in situations where these have
already been preformatted through the research proposal or earlier
developments. In any case, they have to be framed in the
theoretical considerations of what is science. This book aims to
assist scholars and practitioners who would want to deal with this
kind of research and questions. The book does not offer recipes,
nor fixed scenarios. It presents a series of practical research
cases and theoretical insights by experienced researchers who
themselves struggle with what is probably the most meaningful
questions of science today. The practical examples of research in
action are from different disciplines and include themes from
health care, policy research, agricultural technology and
education, in Northern and Southern context. Four leading themes of
research in action are introduced in the first chapter. In the last
chapter the editors return to the dilemmas research in action and
try to clarify the options and responses that are possible in
different situations.
