Engineering skills and knowledge are foundational to technological innovation and development that drive long-term economic growth and help solve societal challenges. Therefore, to ensure national competitiveness and quality of life it is important to understand and to continuously adapt and improve the educational and career pathways of engineers in the United States. To gather this understanding it is necessary to study the people with the engineering skills and knowledge as well as the evolving system of institutions, policies, markets, people, and other resources that together prepare, deploy, and replenish the nation's engineering workforce. This report explores the characteristics and career choices of engineering graduates, particularly those with a BS or MS degree, who constitute the vast majority of degreed engineers, as well as the characteristics of those with non-engineering degrees who are employed as engineers in the United States. It provides insight into their educational and career pathways and related decision making, the forces that influence their decisions, and the implications for major elements of engineering education-to-workforce pathways. Table of Contents Front Matter Executive Summary Introduction 1 Characteristics of Engineers and the Engineering Workforce 2 Challenges for Engineering Education 3 Factors That Influence the Decision Making of Engineering Students and Graduates 4 Major Findings and Recommendations Appendix A: The Engineering Education-Workforce Continuum Appendix B: Glossary of Engineering Fields Appendix C: Examining Postsecondary and Post-College Pathways of Engineering Students Who Start at Four-Year Colleges and Universities Appendix D: Cobweb Model of the Engineering Labor Market Appendix E: Advancing Our Understanding of Engineering Education Pathways, Employment Dynamics, and Economic Impact Through the Innovative Use of Administrative Data Appendix F: Workshop Program Appendix G: Biographies of Committee Members
Currently, many states are adopting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or are revising their own state standards in ways that reflect the NGSS. For students and schools, the implementation of any science standards rests with teachers. For those teachers, an evolving understanding about how best to teach science represents a significant transition in the way science is currently taught in most classrooms and it will require most science teachers to change how they teach. That change will require learning opportunities for teachers that reinforce and expand their knowledge of the major ideas and concepts in science, their familiarity with a range of instructional strategies, and the skills to implement those strategies in the classroom. Providing these kinds of learning opportunities in turn will require profound changes to current approaches to supporting teachers' learning across their careers, from their initial training to continuing professional development. A teacher's capability to improve students' scientific understanding is heavily influenced by the school and district in which they work, the community in which the school is located, and the larger professional communities to which they belong. Science Teachers' Learning provides guidance for schools and districts on how best to support teachers' learning and how to implement successful programs for professional development. This report makes actionable recommendations for science teachers' learning that take a broad view of what is known about science education, how and when teachers learn, and education policies that directly and indirectly shape what teachers are able to learn and teach. The challenge of developing the expertise teachers need to implement the NGSS presents an opportunity to rethink professional learning for science teachers. Science Teachers' Learning will be a valuable resource for classrooms, departments, schools, districts, and professional organizations as they move to new ways to teach science. Table of Contents Front Matter Summary 1 Introduction 2 A New Vision of Science Teaching and Learning 3 The Current Status of Science Instruction 4 The K-12 Science Teaching Workforce 5 Science Teachers' Learning Needs 6 Professional Development Programs 7 Teacher Learning in Schools and Classrooms 8 Creating a Supportive Context for Teacher Learning 9 Conclusions, Recommendations, and Directions for Research Appendix: Biographical Sketches of Committee Members and Staff
Continuum announces a new series of classic works of mysticism with representative texts from all the major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. A mix of familiar texts with proven sales potential and less familiar works with untapped readerships will introduce the committed of all faiths to key contemplative texts from outside their traditions. Each volume will be bound with lavish, full-color covers, and illustrated throughout. The Book of Concealed Mystery is a book of the key text of the Kabbalah, a work known as the Zohar ("Splendour"). The Zohar is a commentary on the Torah and although it is sometimes ascribed to a second-century rabbi, Simon Bar-Yochai, the form in which it is most widely known originates with Moses of Leon, a native of Granada, who died in 1305. The kabbalists believe that the undefinable origin of all things is Ein Sof -- the cause of causes, the infinite, that which underlies everything. The universe emanates from the divine in successive layers called esefiroti. Everything exists in God, but God extends infinitely beyond existence. All we know and are is linked together, pervaded and maintained by the divine. According to The Book of Concealed Mystery, the light of God must be concealed in order to be revealed to creation. Even though the kabbalists believe that ultimately Ein Sof is beyond expression or understanding, the contemplation of God's presence in all things causes our thoughts to be purified
These three journeys take theater critic Margaret Croyden to a Polish forest retreat devised by experimental theater director Jerzy Grotowski, through intensive sessions at a Catskills ashram with Hindu guru Baba Muktananda, and, finally, to a spiritual teacher in an Israel divided by both the metaphor and the reality of war. Each experience, powerfully evoked, arouses memories of Croyden's past - her long forgotten childhood with her Jewish family in Brooklyn, her youthful dreams and aspirations, and her adult search for fulfillment and spiritual transendence. Each experience brings her closer to her identity as a woman, a Jew, and a writer. Croyden's quest turns up no easy answers, no doctrinaire catharses. The struggle for self-knowledge is slow and painful, requiring both a remembering and a forgetting. Croyden's perceptions may sometimes shock - especially those of the relationship between sexuality and religious ecstasy and of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This memoir - moving, thought-provoking, and daringly honest - tells a brave tale of a modern woman's discovery of her authentic self.
