This work explores varying concepts of irony in Arthurian romance. It looks at the places where irony is linked to other forms of improper speech and criticism, is transformed into polemic or serves to provoke, and where it suggests a social function of the literature. The volume thus casts new light on medieval narrative as well as on the modern literary phenomenon of irony."

Junge und erfahrene Artusforscher(innen) gehen am Beispiel verschiedener europaischer Artusromane zentralen Fragen aus den Bereichen Gender Studies, Spiritualitatsforschung, Literatursoziologie/ Gewaltforschung, Narratologie und Medienkulturwissenschaft nach. Even though violence often functions irrationally, recent research has suggested that, as a form of nonverbal communication, violence follows certain rules. The essays explore this phenomenon, with a special focus on collective violence. They investigate examples taken from the cultural and literary history of the premodern era to examine rules of violent action, rules that provoke violence, and rules about discussing violence.

Johann von WA1/4rzburg's "Wilhelm von A-sterreich" is a late representative of the courtly romance. Here it receives attention for the first time against the background of its literary-historical context and in terms of its complexity as a genre hybrid. At a time when didactic minor epic poetry, allegory, and the historicalization of courtly literature were all coming to a head, Johann interwove and set off against one another motivic strains and structural elements of Minnerede, romance, and historiography. The author sets out to trace exactly how he did this and also to show the lengths gone to in the reception of his work in the 14th to 16th centuries, from the manuscript scribes all the way to Hans Sachs, to impose a more unified character on the work. The annex contains a hitherto unedited Minneklage (love plaint).

Oft ist vom 'Artusmythos' die Rede, wobei 'Mythos' alltagssprachlich letztlich alles Altertumliche, Bedeutungs- oder Geheimnisvolle bezeichnen kann. Dem steht eine aktuelle geisteswissenschaftliche Diskussion uber den Begriff des 'Mythos' gegenuber. Die Germanistik ubernimmt hierbei meist eine Vorreiterrolle. Der vorliegende Band oeffnet die Diskussion programmatisch fur den interdisziplinaren Dialog mit den anderen Philologien. Fokussiert auf das Feld der Artusliteratur, fragt der Band danach, welches Verstandnis von 'Mythos' welchen Phanomenen im arthurischen Roman angemessen ist. Inhaltlich wird der Begriff mit vorchristlichen Glaubens- und Weltmodellen verbunden; die Beitrage analysieren die Nachwirkung des mythischen Substrats in der Artusdichtung. Strukturell und formal wird der 'Mythos' als eine a-kausale, zeitlose Erzahlform verstanden, als eine Alternative zur Historiographie; zuweilen nahert er sich dem Fiktionalen, Magischen oder Symbolischen an. Deutlich wird, wie die einzelnen Romane je anders mit dem Mythischen umgehen, es destruieren, funktionalisieren oder restituieren. Der Band zeigt damit nachdrucklich, dass es einen literaturwissenschaftlichen Begriff des 'Mythos' jenseits der Einzeltexte nicht geben kann.

The series "QUELLEN UND FORSCHUNGEN ZUR LITERATUR- UND KULTURGESCHICHTE" (Sources and Research in the History of Literature and Culture), with a rich tradition stretching back to 1874, is an established feature among the renowned publications for German Literary Studies. Edited by Mark-Georg Dehrmann and Christiane Witthoeft, the series presents examples of high-quality scholarship examining literary texts in conjunction with historical cultural phenomena, particularly with the other arts. There is an explicit demand for literary studies with a transdisciplinary approach. German literature from the Middle Ages to the present day forms the main focus of the series. As the historical cultural thrust of the series includes aspects of intercultural experience and national perceptions of the other, Quellen und Forschungen is also open to occasional comparative studies. The publications of the series include monographs, doctoral and professorial theses. Works presented for acceptance in the series are required to display scholarly relevance and excellence in method and presentation.

Der Artushof ist fraglos, strukturell wie thematisch, das Zentrum der arthurischen Romane. Immer wieder hat er aus sozial-, macht- und institutionengeschichtlicher sowie poetologischer Perspektive interessiert. Heute, nach dem Durchschreiten verschiedener kulturwissenschaftlicher turns (wie dem performative oder dem spatial turn), lohnt es sich, einen neuen, explizit interdisziplinaren und aus dem Dialog verschiedener nationaler Forschungsdiskurse profitierenden Blick auf diese Institution zu werfen. Die Beitrage dieses Bands fragen nach der raumlichen Inszenierung des Hofs durch die Literatur und nach deren performativer Einbindung am Hof, nach dem Status hoefischer OEffentlichkeit sowie nach der Rolle von Macht und Eros am Hof, die ihn als Institution oder als literarisches Experiment konstituieren und gefahrden. Sie hinterfragen kritisch die >Idealitat< des Artushofs und die Tragweite der Textsorte >Artusroman<. Schliesslich untersuchen sie die Funktion und Rezeption des Hofs auch in hoffernen oder hofkritischen Kontexten, von der Hanse bis zur modernen amerikanischen Kultur.

This volume dedicated to Walter Haug contains 23 papers by medievalists who have worked with him in TA1/4bingen. The topics covered range across the heroic epic, the courtly romance, mysticism (with two first editions), narrative literature in the Late Middle Ages and the aftermath of medieval literature in the Early Renaissance, Baroque and present-day writing, together with the interface between literature, philosophy and religion. The papers take up central themes in Walter Hauga (TM)s research and carry them forward.With its mix of close philological textual study and theoretical reflection the volume opens up new paths to understanding medieval literature.
