When Francis Cassavant returns to his home town, his face horribly
disfigured during World War II, he is tormented by memories of the
conflict. People believe him to be a teenage war hero, not
realising that his act of 'heroism' was in fact a suicide attempt.
Back home, Francis has a mission - to get revenge on the youth
leader he idolised, but betrayed him. And he's prepared to do
whatever it takes. What are the themes? Heroism, conflict, struggle
against evil, guilt, forgiveness, loneliness, loyalty. Teaching
points This short novel, with its gripping plot and engaging
themes, is accessible to a wide range of abilities. Provides
excellent opportunities for exploring structure and narrative
viewpoint.
A provocative story about the return home of teenage war hero and war victim, Francis Joseph Cassavant, to confront his past - the youth leader he idolized and who betrayed him - and the girl he still loves.

This work consists of two about equal parts. The first part is
based upon the daily diary the author kept from late October 1967
through late June 1968, when he was wounded in action. During his
time in the Mekong Delta region in South Vietnam, the author spent
half his time with either the infantry as forward observer or with
a howitzer battery. The second part of this work states both some
military and political reasons why America lost the Vietnam War and
other such topics. Various other trenchant observations, analysis
and conclusions are also made.

In a contemporary sense, the United States education system has
become a cultural and political battleground. The US has witnessed
a surge in racially motivated violence, restrictions on women's
reproductive rights, and xenophobic policies. The most alarming
development is the institutionalization of white supremacist
ideologies that suppress the teaching of accurate histories of our
racially stratified society. The US continues to grapple with
social domination based on various sociocultural identities such as
race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexual orientation, identity,
ability, and other lived experiences. This book aims to equip
educators with a framework for providing instructional leadership
that ensures culturally responsive instruction. Changing what is
taught, how it is taught, and who it is intended for is one of the
most effective ways of contributing to a more progressive,
equitable, and inclusive society. This requires instructional
leaders to become equity leaders who mitigate harmful educational
practices from prepackaged curricula and teacher evaluation
systems. Through an intentionally diverse team of educators,
schools can observe, measure, and support teachers to become
culturally responsive instructors through formative feedback
structures. It is through the practice of culturally responsive
instructional supervision that schools can transform from systems
of oppression into systems of opportunity.

Earth's Core: Geophysics of a Planet's Deepest Interior provides a
multidisciplinary approach to Earth's core, including seismology,
mineral physics, geomagnetism, and geodynamics. The book examines
current observations, experiments, and theories; identifies
outstanding research questions; and suggests future directions for
study. With topics ranging from the structure of the core-mantle
boundary region, to the chemical and physical properties of the
core, the workings of the geodynamo, inner core seismology and
dynamics, and core formation, this book offers a multidisciplinary
perspective on what we know and what we know we have yet to
discover. The book begins with the fundamental material and
concepts in seismology, mineral physics, geomagnetism, and
geodynamics, accessible from a wide range of backgrounds. The book
then builds on this foundation to introduce current research,
including observations, experiments, and theories. By identifying
unsolved problems and promising routes to their solutions, the book
is intended to motivate further research, making it a valuable
resource both for students entering Earth and planetary sciences
and for researchers in a particular subdiscipline who need to
broaden their understanding.
Few of us know how to navigate the territory of traumatic loss
successfully. Sweet Sorrow shows how we can respond and grow
stronger from loss and suffering. Written by a psychologist and
certified bereavement trauma specialist in the decade following the
loss of her husband, father, mother, and only sibling, this
carefully considered work provides perspective on grief and healing
over time. This longer-term approach allows readers to have a more
complete and accurate picture of the oscillations of grief over
time. The book describes not only the immediate agony of the
author's losses, but also the process of starting over and making a
successful new life as a single person full of hope and joy. Sweet
Sorrow combines the author's psychological expertise and clinical
experience with the compelling art of memoir to illuminate the
surprising ways in which loss survivors can grow and even thrive to
achieve wholeness after heartbreaking, traumatic losses. Using
findings from post-traumatic growth, as well as evidence-based
psychological approaches, Sweet Sorrow illustrates through story
and example, ways for grief survivors to start over, to manage
chaos and stress, to let go, and to heal with new strategies and
re-storying. Sweet Sorrow also provides resources and
recommendations for self-care, as well as tips and suggestions for
all of us trying to respond creatively and helpfully to those
around us suffering loss. Ultimately, Sweet Sorrow is a book of
inspiration intended to accompany readers through the processes of
loss and grief much like a helpful Sherpa might guide a lost
traveler.
Identity Orchestration demonstrates the particular importance of
identity balance in behavioral health. The contributors to this
collection deeply engage with identity and psychological strength
by examining race, gender, class, and context through stories,
highlighting the asset- and story-based constructs of identity.

Food Security Governance in the Arctic-Barents Region provides a
multidisciplinary perspective on the major food security and safety
challenges faced in the Arctic region. The authors address existing
gaps in current knowledge of the coordination and implementation of
legal framework and policy that affects the Arctic. The volume is
unique in its focus on the Barents region, an area of northern
Europe containing Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. The region
has a population of approximately 5.2 million, including indigenous
and non-indigenous peoples. The authors offer a balanced and
systemic review of the role of traditional foods in this region,
along with an overview of the regulatory tools and institutions
that govern food security. Food security and safety in the
-Arctic-Barents region is connected to and impacted by
transformations from both inside and outside the area. Climate
change, globalization and human activities affect the availability,
accessibility, and affordability of food. The result of these
transformations has an impact on the food security and safety for
both indigenous and non-indigenous individuals and communities. The
authors, by highlighting these challenges, reveal the importance of
having harmonized policies and legal tools in place in order to
strengthen food security and safety in the Barents region. The book
forms part of the main outcome of the Academy of Finland's ongoing
project on Human Security as a promotional tool for societal
security in the Arctic: Addressing Multiple Vulnerability to its
Population with Specific Reference to the Barents Region
(HuSArctic). Researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders
will find the book to be an important contribution to the promotion
of policies and strategies on food security.
