This book contains the written contributions to the International Symposium on th Medical Simulation (ISMS'04) held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA on June 17 th and June 18 , 2004. Manuscripts are organized around five thematic sections relating to the multidisciplinary field of Medical Simulation: Soft Tissue Properties and Modeling, Haptic Rendering, Real-Time Deformable Models, Anatomical Modeling, and Development Frameworks. The objectives of the symposium are to gather researchers to present their most recent, and promising work, to highlight research trends and foster dialogue and debates among participants. Live demonstrations are also included at the meeting, but cannot be included in this volume. Finally, to address questions about areas for improvement and future directions of the field, we organized a panel of experts including technical, medical and educational representatives. This event continues the successful symposium organized by Herve Delingette and Nicholas Ayache, in France in June 2003. At that meeting we agreed that it would be beneficial for the community to have an annual gathering for the medical simulation community where researchers can exchange ideas and share their work in this emerging field. ISMS'04 is co-organized by CIMIT / Harvard Medical School and Rutgers University.

In Exiled Home, Susan Bibler Coutin recounts the experiences of Salvadoran children who migrated with their families to the United States during the 1980-1992 civil war. Because of their youth and the violence they left behind, as well as their uncertain legal status in the United States, many grew up with distant memories of El Salvador and a profound sense of disjuncture in their adopted homeland. Through interviews in both countries, Coutin examines how they sought to understand and overcome the trauma of war and displacement through such strategies as recording community histories, advocating for undocumented immigrants, forging new relationships with the Salvadoran state, and, for those deported from the United States, reconstructing their lives in El Salvador. In focusing on the case of Salvadoran youth, Coutin's nuanced analysis shows how the violence associated with migration can be countered through practices that recuperate historical memory while also reclaiming national membership.

This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. "Your son has learning difficulties." This, we were told when our son, Robin, was 2 1/2 years old. The book describes our experiences, good and bad, all through his childhood and into adulthood. How his behaviour varied from his siblings', how friends and family reacted. And about what we accomplished and where we failed. The idea of writing this book was that it might be useful for parents in the same situation we faced fifty years ago. We, my wife, Jane, and I benefitted by meeting and learning from the experiences of other parents. So, here it is. I sincerely hope it will help you in some way in the tremendous task you may be facing.
