This title is intended as a manual for environmental education
practitioners. It provides theoretical background with the view of
improving environmental education practitioners' practice.
Environmental education addresses topics such as: The origin of the
term/concept environmental education in southern Africa; a
philosophical perspective of environmental education; teaching for
the environment; environmental issues; education for
sustainability; environmental education in the informal sector;
environmental education in business and industry; research in
environmental education.
The world is in an environmental crisis dominated by environmental
issues and risks such as loss of biodiversity, pollution,
deforestation, urbanisation and many others. For many commentators,
the solution lies in the provision of adequate education, including
environmental education. Environmental education and education for
sustainability - some South African perspectives perceptively
addresses topics such as a number of environmental issues and risks
of which learners need to be made aware; the history of
environmental education, both internationally and in South Africa;
the ways in which our deeply held value assumptions and even our
religious convictions affect our attitudes towards environmental
issues and environmental education; the meaning of "education for
sustainability"; curriculum development and the teaching and
learning of environmental education; environmental education in the
non-formal sector; environmental education and training in
industry; an introduction to research in environmental education.
Histoire des deux Indes, was arguably the first major example of a
world history, exploring the ramifications of European colonialism
from a global perspective. Frequently reprinted and translated into
many languages, its readers included statesmen, historians,
philosophers and writers throughout Europe and North America.
Underpinning the encyclopedic scope of the work was an extensive
transnational network of correspondents and informants assiduously
cultivated by Raynal to obtain the latest expert knowledge. How
these networks shaped Raynal's writing and what they reveal about
eighteenth-century intellectual sociability, trade and global
interaction is the driving theme of this current volume. From
text-based analyses of the anthropology that structures Raynal's
history of human society to articles that examine new archival
material relating to his use of written and oral sources,
contributors to this book explore among other topics: how the
Histoire created a forum for intellectual interaction and
collaboration; how Raynal created and manipulated his own image as
a friend to humanity as a promotional strategy; Raynal's
intellectual debts to contemporary economic theorists; the
transnational associations of booksellers involved in marketing the
Histoire; the Histoire's reception across Europe and North America
and its long-lasting influence on colonial historiography and
political debate well into the nineteenth century.

Professor John Halder is a 'good' man. But 'good' men must adapt to
survive. As the world faces its Second World War, Halder finds
himself pulled into a movement with unthinkable consequences. Good
is a story about a liberal-minded university professor who drifts
well-meaningly into a position in the upper reaches of the Nazi
administration. John Halder, a professor of literature, seems to be
a good man; he diligently visits his blind and senile mother and
looks after his vacant wife and three children. He is unremarkable,
other than an unusual neurotic tic: the imaginary sound of band
music plays in the background of his life, particularly at moments
of high emotion. But by writing a book - the result of his own
experience - discussing euthanasia for senile elderly people and by
lecturing on the delicacy of German literary culture, John has
unintentionally made himself a very desirable acquisition for the
Nazi party. A profound and alarming examination of passivity and
the rationalisation of evil. Originally published in 1982, this new
edition was published to coincide with the West End revival in 2022
starring David Tennant.

Virtual environments (VE) are human-computer interfaces in which
the computer creates a sensory-immersing environment that
interactively responds to and is controlled by the behaviour of the
user. Since these technologies will continue to become more
reliable, more resolute and more affordable, it's important to
consider the advantages that VEs may offer to support business
processes. The term 'synthetic world' refers to a subset of VEs,
having a large virtual landscape and a set of rules that govern the
interactions among participants. Currently, the primary motivators
for participation in these synthetic worlds appear to be fun and
novelty. As the novelty wears off, synthetic worlds will need to
demonstrate a favourable value proposition if they are to survive.
In particular, non-game-oriented worlds will need to facilitate
business processes to a degree that exceeds their substantial costs
for development and maintenance. Working Through Synthetic Worlds
explores a variety of different tasks that might benefit by being
performed within a synthetic world. The editors use a distinctive
format for the book, consisting of a set of chapters composed of
three parts: c a story or vignette that describes work conducted
within a synthetic world based loosely on the question, 'what will
work be like in the year 2025?', founded on the expert authors'
expectations of plausible future technologies c a scholarly review
of the technologies described by the stories and the current
theories related to those technologies c a prescription for future
research required to bridge the current state-of-the-art with the
notional worlds described in the stories. The book will appeal to
undergraduate and graduate students, professors, scientists and
engineers, managers in high-tech industries and software
developers.
Carl Peter Thunberg studied at Uppsala University in Sweden where he was a favourite student of the great Linnaeus, father of modern scientific classification. He determined to travel the world and enlisted as a physician with the Dutch East India Company. He arrived in Japan in the summer of 1775 and stayed one year, the maximum continuous term permitted for a European at the time. He travelled to Edo (modern Tokyo) where he became friends with the shogun's private physician, Katsuragawa Hosshu, a notorious rake. They maintained a correspondence even after the Swede had returned to his homeland. Thunberg's 'Travels' appeared in English in 1795 and was never reprinted. This edition makes available once again Thunberg's extraordinary writings on Japan, complete with illustrations. Fully annotated and introduced by Timon Screech.
First published in 1973. This book describes the career of Sir
George Macartney, who spent twenty-eight years at the turn of the

Fungi belonging to the genera "Trichoderma" and "Gliocladium" are
soil-bourne saprophytes which have been used for industrial and
agricultural applications for decades. Some strains produce enzymes
and antibiotics while others are useful as biological agents for
the protections of plants against pathogens. This first volume of
two, gives a detailed account of the morphology and taxonomy of
"Trichoderma" and "Gliocladium", before disscusing their ecology
and basic biology. Molecular biological aspects examined include
their genome and gene structure, genetic transformation and asexual
genetics. A chapter on safety aspects is also included.
This text discusses factors such as mast overload, capacity of
drawworks, and deviation in the hole to be drilled and the strata
to be drilled. An omnibus approach to drilling techniques and
problems is adopted.

This groundbreaking work calls for the overhaul of traditional
Ayurveda and its transformation into a progressive, evidence-based
practice. This book begins by looking back at the research of the
last three centuries, Indian medicinal plants, and Ayurveda in a
twenty-first-century context. The first part of this book explores
the limitations of contemporary Ayurvedic pharmacognosy and
pharmacology, discussing the challenges the practice faces from
research and clinical trials. It makes a compelling argument for
the necessity of change. The second part of the book defines and
elaborates upon a new, scientific path, taking the reader from
identification of the herb through all stages of drug development.
An essential tool for herbal drug development, this text is
designed for knowledgeable students, practitioners, and scholars of
Ayurveda, pharmacy, and herbal medicine.
This book, a study of revolution in China, considers movements of
Western origin, such as Christianity or Communism, only as they
appear in the Chinese context, treating them as integral factors in
the Chinese revolutionary situation.

Life on our planet depends upon having a climate that changes
within narrow limits - not too hot for the oceans to boil away nor
too cold for the planet to freeze over. Over the past billion years
Earth's average temperature has stayed close to 14-15 DegreesC,
oscillating between warm greenhouse states and cold icehouse
states. We live with variation, but a variation with limits.
Paleoclimatology is the science of understanding and explaining
those variations, those limits, and the forces that control them.
Without that understanding we will not be able to foresee future
change accurately as our population grows. Our impact on the planet
is now equal to a geological force, such that many geologists now
see us as living in a new geological era - the Anthropocene.
Paleoclimatology describes Earth's passage through the greenhouse
and icehouse worlds of the past 800 million years, including the
glaciations of Snowball Earth in a world that was then free of land
plants. It describes the operation of the Earth's thermostat, which
keeps the planet fit for life, and its control by interactions
between greenhouse gases, land plants, chemical weathering,
continental motions, volcanic activity, orbital change and solar
variability. It explains how we arrived at our current
understanding of the climate system, by reviewing the contributions
of scientists since the mid-1700s, showing how their ideas were
modified as science progressed. And it includes reflections based
on the author's involvement in palaeoclimatic research. The book
will transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of
thought about future climate change. It will be an invaluable
course reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students in
geology, climatology, oceanography and the history of science. "A
real tour-de-force! An outstanding summary not only of the science
and what needs to be done, but also the challenges that are a
consequence of psychological and cultural baggage that threatens
not only the survival of our own species but the many others we are
eliminating as well." Peter Barrett Emeritus Professor of Geology,
Antarctic Research Centre, Victoria University of Wellington, New
Zealand "What a remarkable and wonderful synthesis... it will be a
wonderful source of [paleoclimate] information and insights."
Christopher R. Scotese Professor, Department of Earth and Planetary
Sciences, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA
Originally published in 1980, Language in Tanzania presents a
comprehensive overview of the Survey of Language Use and Language
Teaching in Eastern Africa. Using extensive research carried out by
an interdisciplinary group of international and local scholars, the
survey also covers Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia. The book
represents one of the most in-depth sociolinguistic studies carried
out on this region at this time. It provides basic linguistic data
necessary to policy-makers, administrators, and educators, and will
be of interest to those researching the formulation and execution
of language policy.
On the night of 8 November 2016, at 8:15 pm, India's Prime
Minister, Narendra Modi, announced in a televised broadcast to the
nation that with effect from midnight, currency notes of
denominations Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 would no longer be legal tender.
In one stroke, this involved the de-recognition of over 86 per cent
of the value of Indian currency in circulation with only four
hours' notice. This important book provides a quick and concise
explanation of the goals, implications, initial effects and the
political economy of this major demonetisation move by the
Government of India. It clarifies key concepts and offers astute
economic analysis to guide the reader through the various claims,
arguments and critiques that have been made; highlights the
complexities of the processes that have been unleashed; and
examines the likely outcomes in the long term as well as those that
are immediately evident. Timely and lucid, this book will interest
students and researchers in the fields of economics, finance,
management, law, politics and governance as well as policy makers,
legislators, civil society activists and the media.
