Tamoxifen Tales: Suggestions for Scientific Survival presents a
case study describing the academic journey of teams behind major
advances in medical sciences, highlighting lessons learned that are
applicable to the next generation of scientists. This book provides
a manual on the successful mentoring of young scientists, including
stories describing how training experience shaped careers to become
leaders in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The book
documents Professor V. Craig Jordan's 50-year career in medical
sciences that led to the discovery and development of Selective
Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), which became the standard of
women's healthcare around the world. Additionally, it illustrates
the versatility of a scientist with a commitment to serving
societies. This important resource will be a useful and interesting
book for established medical scientists, research mentors and
advanced students wanting to chart a successful and impactful
research career.
Tamoxifen is a pioneering medicine for the treatment and prevention
of breast cancer. It is the first drug targeted therapy in cancer
to be successful. Tamoxifen targets the tumor estrogen receptor.
The therapy is known to have saved the lives of millions of women
over the past 40 years. This monograph, written by V. Craig Jordan
- known as the "father of tamoxifen" - and his Tamoxifen Team at
the Georgetown University Washington DC, illustrates the journey of
this milestone in medicine. It includes a personal interview with
V. Craig Jordan about his four decades of discovery in breast
cancer research and treatment. V. Craig Jordan was there for the
birth of tamoxifen as he is credited for reinventing a "failed
morning after contraceptive" to become the "gold standard" for the
treatment of breast cancer. He contributed to every aspect of
tamoxifen application in therapeutics and all aspects of
tamoxifen's pharmacology. He discovered the selective estrogen
receptor modulators (SERMs) and explored the new biology of
estrogen-induced apoptosis.

This volume presents the evolution of the authors' ideas about
estrogen action and its modulation by a new group of drugs called
SERMs (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators). The pioneering
SERMs - tamoxifen and raloxifene - are known to have saved the
lives of millions of women around the world and improved the health
of millions more. Estrogen is the central hormone of women's health
and reproduction. The book is a journey through 40 years of
discovery and success in advancing women's health, with the
prospect of improved innovation through medicinal chemistry for the
future.
If the River is Hidden charts the journey of two writers from the
source to the mouth of the Bann, Northern Ireland's longest river.
Through a dialogue of prose and poetry the history, landscape and
divisions that have come to define the North are explored and
challenged. With backgrounds from each side of the sectarian
divide, theirs is a journey of uncovering a sense of place and of
searching for meaning; a reshaping of the authors' own memories,
experiences and expectations. For like the river, it is not just
what is visible, but what is hidden, that comes to define us.

Pharmacologic interventions to prevent the evolution of human
cancers are still in its infancy, although a good number o- mostly
controlled - clinical studies have been performed in the past two
decades. However, regarding the partially stagnating therapeutic
results of major epithelial cancer types such as breast-, lung-,
colon- and ENT-cancer types, the problem of in terference with the
evolution of disease at a preclinical level is an intriguing one,
and the field seems to develop into one of the fastest growing
domaines of modern oncology. This process is fa cilitated by the
developments of molecular on co-genetics and the gowing existence
of family cancer units, allowing to better identi fy and inform
respective high risk groups, thus enabling re searchers and
clinicians to more realistically target their chemo preventive
efforts to the true populations at risk. On this changing
background, the newly formed International Society of Cancer
Chemoprevention (ISCaC) together with the Swiss Cancer League and
the Interdisciplinary Oncology Center of St. Gallen/Switzerland
organized an international Symposium in September 1997, inviting
basic researchers, epidemiologists and clinical oncologists of
related disciplines to discuss pertinent issues of experimental and
clinical chemo- and bio-prevention in a scientific workshop.

NEEDLE is a true story, though in many ways I still can't believe
it actually happened. After all, I'd graduated from a prestigious
university, was reared in an affluent home and knew that drugs were
for losers. In fact, I'm not even sure when the metamorphosis
occurred-when I made the official leap from struggling musician to
struggling junky-but it was definitely before I first stuck myself
with a needle and began selling liquor camouflaged in fruit juice
to underage children of the rich and famous. Of course, that was
merely the tip of the illicit iceberg as so much remains hidden in
that shadowy world where dope dealers pose as sales associates in
drug fronts disguised as clothing boutiques, and chemically
dependent cabbies provide shuttle services to junkies on a quest
for the perfect fix. But certainly, the veil of deception would
eventually be torn away when I was banished to that awful place,
that asylum for the wretched, where another horrific decision would
seal my fate with the watery wreckage of an international tragedy.
*Profits from NEEDLE will be used to eliminate animal cruelty and
improve the lives of homeless pets.
While flicking through some photographs of a holiday in the
Caribbean in 2009 Craig Jordan was appalled by what he saw, an
overweight out of shape middle aged man on a very slippery slope.
Craig decided there and then on a campaign to get "Fit for Fifty"
and this became his mantra but the question was which sport? Over
the next few months he was a regular visitor in the gym and went
out and bought a mountain bike but nothing seemed to inspire and
getting the journey to get fit seemed destined to fail. On a whim
Craig entered a local triathlon and from that moment was hooked on
the sport that over the next year took him on an incredible journey
across 3 continents, 16 countries meeting and training with the
stars of the sport and in the process getting in better shape than
he has ever been at any point in his life. An inspiration not only
to triathletes but for anyone who believes age is a roadblock to
ultimate fitness.
