Great Chess Romantics, Craig Pritchett selects five players, whose
chess artistry expresses a deeply personal commitment to the
discovery and revelation of great new truths and beauty on the
chessboard. Anderssen defined romanticism's inherently dramatic and
correct combinational core. Chigorin championed this essence in
splendid opposition to an emerging new classical consensus. Reti
revealed the extraordinary power of new flank openings. Larsen
confounded the overly sober, scientific Soviet schoolI at
innumerable turns. In the computer age, Morozevich constantly
discovers new depths to chess, while simply oozing exquisite
strokes in his best games.
The revolutionary Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) considered himself
to be in the vanguard of an emerging, late-19th century 'Modern'
school, which embraced a new, essentially scientific vitality in
its methods of research, analysis, evaluation, planning, experiment
and even belligerent fight. Steinitz, who dominated the chess world
in the shadow of a more directly attacking, openly tactical and
combinative, so-called 'romantic' age, established a much firmer
positional basis to chess. A pivotal change! This book follows that
story, both before and beyond Steinitz's early 'modern' era,
focusing closely on the subtly varied ways in which the world's
greatest players in the last two centuries have thought about and
played the game, moving it forward. The author reflects on all
sixteen 'classical' world champions and others, notably: C-L. M. de
la Bourdonnais, Adolf Anderssen, Paul Morphy, Siegbert Tarrasch,
Aron Nimzowitsch, Richard Reti, Judit Polgar and the contemporary
Artificial Intelligence phenomenon, AlphaZero. Be inspired by this
exploration of the 'modern' game's roots and trajectory!
The Scheveningen is an uncompromising and flexible variation of
Black's most popular defence to 1 e4, the Sicilian. This book takes
a different look at this famous opening. The early moves and ideas
are introduced and care is taken to explain the reasoning behind
them.

This book is a story about the life, trials and experiences of
Marvin Schroeder, a field geologist during the 20th century. He
participated in the last great geologic survey of the American West
while working with the U.S. Geological Survey, riding more than
6,000 miles on horseback in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the Grand
Tetons. During his career, the author briefly worked on the Nevada
Test Site and also tramped through Central Alaska on a mission to
negate a Russian invasion over the northern polar region. The
political ineptness he later experienced led to disillusionment in
a federal agency involved in land-use planning. Marvin's stories
span the whole gamut of his life and career. Some of his tales -
The Blonde from Muscle Beach, A Town that Committed Suicide, The
Phantom Wild Horse, A Russian Spy, The Lopsided Deer of Teton
County, Sleeping with the Enemy - rank him with the best of story
tellers. His narratives transport the reader into the world of Mark
Twain in the 21st century. Marvin also reveals how the lack of
scientific planning will eventually lead to severe environmental
problems. He exposes the tragic justification of the slaughter of
wild horses in our current day and chronicles the beginning of a
major environmental disaster in northwest Colorado.
