All aspects of our work and private lives are increasingly measured and managed. But how has this 'audit culture' arisen and what kind of a world is it producing? Cris Shore and Susan Wright provide a timely account of the rise of the new industries of accounting, enumeration and ranking from an anthropological perspective, drawing on political economy, ethnographic observation and genealogical excavation. The Crown and Constitutional Reform is an innovative, interdisciplinary exchange between experts in law, anthropology and politics about the Crown, constitutional monarchy and the potential for constitutional reform in Commonwealth common law countries. The anthropological study of elites has gained increasing prominence with the issues of power, prestige and ststus in the societies of of anthropologists themselves. However, our understanding of elites is often partial, obscured as it is by the theoretical weaknesses of Western models on the one hand and, on the other, by the difficulties in studying elites from the 'inside'. The past decade has witnessed the phenomenal rise of cultural studies on both sides of the Atlantic. This text asks whether the very success of this comparatively new field of academic enquiry stands as a tribute to anthropology, or whether the success of cultural studies is evidence of anthropology's fragmentation and decline. Amidst fears that anthropology is being eclipsed, this collection of essays asks what kinds of relationships are feasible between anthropology and cultural studies, and how they might develop in the future. Is there scope for fruitful dialogue and, if so, on whose terms? Are there shared theoretical agendas?
