In dem hier vorliegenden Vortrag von 1864 wirft Curt Wachsmuth einen kritischen Blick auf das moderne Griechenland und seine Bewohner. Auf der Suche nach Erklarungen fur einen Wandel, der wenig positive Seiten zu bergen scheint, begibt er sich auf die Spuren der alten Griechen und kommt zu dem Schluss: das Neue lasst sich ohne das Alte nicht begreifen. Curt Wachsmuth studierte Klassische Philologie in Jena und Bonn. 1860 promovierte er uber das philologische Schaffen des pergamenischen Gelehrten Krates von Mallos. Es folgten Aufenthalte in Berlin und Athen und schliesslich die Ruckkehr nach Bonn, wo er sich habilitierte. Wachsmuth wurde 1864- im Alter von nur 27 Jahren- als ordentlicher Professor an die Universitat Marburg berufen. 1886 ubernahm er in der Nachfolge von Ludwig Lange den Lehrstuhl fur Alte Geschichte und Klassische Philologie der Universitat Leipzig. Er gilt als "der letzte Vertreter jener gelehrten Generation, in dem zwei auseinandergehende Studiengebiete, das klassisch-philologische und das althistorische, zu einer Einheit verschmolzen."
