A middle-aged man jumps under a tube train at Shepherd's Bush
station, and a teenage girl is killed in a hit-and-run, in a
country lane puzzlingly far from her home on the White City Estate:
two unrelated incidents which occupy DCI Bill Slider and his team
during a slack period. At least it's a change of speed after the
grind of domestics, burglaries and Community Liaison. But links to
a cold case - another dead teenager, pulled out of the River Thames
- create doubts as to whether they are indeed unrelated. And slowly
a trail of corruption and betrayal is uncovered, leading Slider and
his firm ever deeper into a morass of horror.
'It's quiet out there,' says DS Atherton, at Bill Slider's office
window. 'Too quiet.' Right on cue, the phone rings. 'Now look what
you've done,' says Slider. It's a homicide. The post-Christmas lull
is officially over. The deceased is antiques expert Rowland
Egerton, the darling of daytime TV, stabbed to death in his
luxurious West London home. The press are going to be all over this
one like a nasty rash: the pressure's on Slider for a result, and
soon. Egerton's partner, the bulky, granite-faced John Lavender,
found the body; did he also do the deed? Or was it a burglary gone
wrong? A missing Faberge box and Impressionist painting point that
way. But as Slider and his team investigate, none of the facts seem
to fit. And it soon becomes clear that the much-loved, charming Mr
Egerton wasn't as universally loved, or perhaps as charming, as
Slider was first led to believe ...
Bill Slider and his team investigate the murder of a mystery man
David Rogers was a doctor, handsome, charming and rich. He lived
the lifestyle of a consultant - expensive clothes, top restaurants,
exclusive clubs - until someone killed him in the hallway of his
lovely million-plus-pound house. The odd thing was that none of his
many girlfriends seemed to know where David Rogers worked or
exactly what he did. Bill Slider and his firm are thrown into the
mystery what on earth he was up to and why someone wanted to shoot
him in the head. Was it passion - there seemed to be plenty of that
in Rogers's life - professional jealousy, or plain old money? The
investigation reveals a more turbulent career behind the Dirty
Doctor than at first appeared, a shadowy organisation called the
Windhover Trust, and a trail of bodies leading to a deadlier
conclusion...
When Melanie Hunter goes missing, the men in her life come under
suspicion. And there's plenty to suspect: lies, half-truths,
deceptions. When you pull one thread, the whole fabric of family
life can come apart. There are secrets in Melanie's past, and pain
she tried to hide from the world. Slider and his team need to
answer two questions: who loved Melanie, and who loved her too
much?

Review DCI Bill Slider tackles the coldest of cold cases in this
absorbing mystery. A young couple discover human remains buried in
the garden of their new house: could this be the resting place of
14-year-old Amanda Knight, who disappeared from the same garden two
decades before, and was never seen again? The problem comes almost
as a relief to DCI Slider, still suffering from the fallout of his
previous case. He is not popular with the Powers That Be, and his
immediate boss, Detective Superintendent Porson, reckons that at
least this little puzzle will keep Slider out of trouble. After
all, with a murder twenty years in the past, this is the coldest of
cold cases. Most of the suspects and principal players are now dead
too, and all passion is long spent . Or is it?
The murder of a personal fitness trainer draws DCI Bill Slider and
his team into a baffling investigation where nothing is as it first
appears. Fitness trainer Erik Lingoss is found dead in his west
London flat, his head smashed by one of his own dumbbells. His
heartlessly-dumped girlfriend, blood on her clothes and hands, is
the prime suspect. She had means, opportunity, and motive. But is
the case as clear-cut as it seems? Handsome Erik Lingoss had
clients in high places; and he seemed to engender powerful
emotions. If it was a crime of passion, there was plenty of that to
go round: love strong as death, jealousy cruel as the grave. Who
did he let in to his flat that evening? Where is his missing mobile
phone? Why is seven hundred pounds in cash stuffed under his
pillow? The deeper Slider and his team dig, the clearer it becomes
there's far more to this case than meets the eye.

there is something rotten at the heart of the community surrounding
the lovely old house. When Slider finally gets a confession, it's

England in 1912 still bears itself with Edwardian confidence, but
strikes, protests and public violence reveal the fault lines as
society evolves under the spur of new ideas and technology. Among
the many branches of the Morland family, Jessie and Violet,
childhood friends, learn to cope with the surprises of marriage and
motherhood and their different strata of society. Jack,
disappointed in love, loses himself in designing aircraft and
training airmen for the newly formed flying corps. And Anne
exhausted by the Suffragette struggle, seeks comfort in her
friendship with an unconventional young woman. The Titanic tragedy
shakes the confidence of a people used to conquering nature with
engineering; and all the while, the troubled nations of Europe edge
closer to a war no-one wants, but which seems inevitable.
It is 1931 and the world is still reeling from the aftermath of the
Wall Street Crash. Polly Morland has returned to Morland Place,
saving it from financial ruin. Her plans to change things are met
with resistance, however, and she must prove her mettle in a man's
world. Jack, war hero and family man, knows that he must make a
change for the sake of those he holds dear so when an opportunity
arises that would take him back to York, he seizes it with both
hands. In London, Robert is bored with his office job and seeks
something grander. Fatherless and dealing with the repercussions of
his family's bankruptcy, he must make his own way now that he has
been left to the mercy of the world. His sister Charlotte, also
frustrated with her life and sure that she will never receive an
offer of marriage, longs for something different as well. As the
years roll by, the threat of another war hangs in the air and when
King Edward VIII takes to the throne, things seem to be on the
brink of change once more. But like a phoenix rising up from the
ashes, the Morlands prove yet again that they will emerge from
whatever they must face stronger than ever before.
