Philosophical Feminism and Popular Culture (Paperback): Sharon Crasnow, Joanne Waugh Philosophical Feminism and Popular Culture (Paperback)
Sharon Crasnow, Joanne Waugh; Contributions by Kelly Oliver, Cynthia Willett, Julie Willett, …
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The eight essays contained in Philosophical Feminism and Popular Culture explore the portrayal of women and various philosophical responses to that portrayal in contemporary post-civil rights society. The essays examine visual, print, and performance media stand-up comedy, movies, television, and a blockbuster trilogy of novel. These philosophical feminist analyses of popular culture consider the possibilities, both positive and negative, that popular culture presents for articulating the structure of the social and cultural practices in which gender matters, and for changing these practices if and when they follow from, lead to, or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of gender. The essays bring feminist voices to the conversation about gender and attests to the importance of feminist critique in what is sometimes claimed to be a post-feminist era."

Maternal Ethics and Other Slave Moralities (Paperback, Reissue): Cynthia Willett Maternal Ethics and Other Slave Moralities (Paperback, Reissue)
Cynthia Willett
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Maternal Ethics and Other Slave Moralities Cynthia Willett puts forward a novel theory of ethical subjectivity that counters the pathology of sexist, racist, Eurocentric culture. Weaving together accounts of the self drawn from African-American and European philosophies, psychoanalysis, slave narratives and sociology, Willett interrogates what Hegel locates as the core of the self: the desire for recognition.
What a subject experiences as 'social death', 'cultural alienation' or 'spirit murder' according to Willett are problems in the social and psychological dynamics of recognition. A colonized subject suffers from sources of oppression that cannot be fully understood through traditional liberal or Marxist analyses.
Developing her theory of ethical subjectivity, Willett questions the misogynist fantasies projected onto the mother-child relationship, finding instead a sensuality that is repressed in Western culture. She also examines rites of passage into manhood in the work of Frederick Douglass and their relation to the 'master/slave' dialectic. In this compelling analysis Willett illuminates the ways in which maternal subjectivities serve as a critique of instrumental reason, how mothers, blacks and other 'slaves' of history are transforming the repressive culture which, in the West, assumes the name of Reason.

Interspecies Ethics (Paperback): Cynthia Willett Interspecies Ethics (Paperback)
Cynthia Willett
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Interspecies Ethics" explores animals' vast capacity for agency, justice, solidarity, humor, and communication across species. The social bonds diverse animals form provide a remarkable model for communitarian justice and cosmopolitan peace, challenging the human exceptionalism that drives modern moral theory. Situating biosocial ethics firmly within coevolutionary processes, this volume has profound implications for work in social and political thought, contemporary pragmatism, Africana thought, and continental philosophy.

"Interspecies Ethics" develops a communitarian model for multispecies ethics, rebalancing the overemphasis on competition in the original Darwinian paradigm by drawing out and stressing the cooperationist aspects of evolutionary theory through mutual aid. The book's ethical vision offers an alternative to utilitarian, deontological, and virtue ethics, building its argument through rich anecdotes and clear explanations of recent scientific discoveries regarding animals and their agency. Geared toward a general as well as a philosophical audience, the text illuminates a variety of theories and contrasting approaches, tracing the contours of a postmoral ethics.

Irony in the Age of Empire - Comic Perspectives on Democracy and Freedom (Paperback): Cynthia Willett Irony in the Age of Empire - Comic Perspectives on Democracy and Freedom (Paperback)

Comedy, from social ridicule to the unruly laughter of the carnival, provides effective tools for reinforcing social patterns of domination as well as weapons for emancipation. In Irony in the Age of Empire, Cynthia Willett asks: What could embody liberation better than laughter? Why do the oppressed laugh? What vision does the comic world prescribe? For Willett, the comic trumps standard liberal accounts of freedom by drawing attention to bodies, affects, and intimate relationships, topics which are usually neglected by political philosophy. Willett's philosophical reflection on comedy issues a powerful challenge to standard conceptions of freedom by proposing a new kind of freedom that is unapologetically feminist, queer, and multiracial. This book provides a wide-ranging, original, thoughtful, and expansive discussion of citizenship, social manners, and political freedom in our world today.

Uproarious - How Feminists and Other Subversive Comics Speak Truth (Paperback, 1): Cynthia Willett, Julie Willett Uproarious - How Feminists and Other Subversive Comics Speak Truth (Paperback, 1)

A radical new approach to humor, where traditional targets become its agents   Humor is often dismissed as cruel ridicule or harmless fun. But what if laughter is a vital force to channel rage against patriarchy, Islamophobia, or mass incarceration? To create moments of empathy and dialogue between Black Lives Matter and the police? These and other such questions are at the heart of this powerful reassessment of humor. Placing theorists in conversation with comedians, Uproarious offers a full-frontal approach to the very foundation of comedy and its profound political impact.   Here Cynthia Willett and Julie Willett address the four major theories of humor—superiority, relief, incongruity, and social play—through the lens of feminist and game-changing comics such as Wanda Sykes, Margaret Cho, Hannah Gadsby, Hari Kondabolu, and Tig Notaro. They take a radical and holistic approach to the understanding of humor, particularly of humor deployed by those from groups long relegated to the margins, and propose a powerful new understanding of humor as a force that can engender politically progressive social movements. Drawing on a range of cross-disciplinary sources, from philosophies and histories of humor to the psychology and physiology of laughter to animal studies, Uproarious offers a richer understanding of the political and cathartic potential of humor.   A major new contribution to a wider dialogue on comedy, Uproarious grounds for us explorations of outsider humor and our golden age of feminist comics—showing that when women, prisoners, even animals, laugh back, comedy along with belly laughs forge new identities and alter the political climate.

The Soul of Justice - Social Bonds and Racial Hubris (Paperback): Cynthia Willett The Soul of Justice - Social Bonds and Racial Hubris (Paperback)
Cynthia Willett
R1,118 Discovery Miles 11 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cynthia Willett brings together diverse insights from social psychology, classical and contemporary literature, and legal and justice theory to redefine the basis of the moral and legal person.Feminists, communitarians, and postmodern thinkers have made clear that classical liberalism, with its emphasis on individual autonomy and excessive rationalism, is severely limited. Although she is sympathetic with the liberal view, Willett finds it necessary to go further. For her, attention to the social dimensions of the family and civil society is critical if issues of race, gender, class, and sexuality are to be taken seriously. Interdependency, not autonomy, is of increasing significance in an era of globalization.Willett proposes an alternate normative theory that recognizes the impact of social forces on individual well-being. Citizenship in a democracy should not be defined solely on the basis of rights to autonomy, such as bare rights to property or free speech, she explains. Rather, citizenship should be defined first of all in terms of the rights, responsibilities, and capacities of the social person. It is within the African American tradition of political thought that Willett finds a more useful definition of human identity and political freedom. The African American experience offers a compelling vision of social change and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a social person. By focusing on everyday battles against racism, Willett contends, we can gain valuable insight into the meaning of justice.
