A selection of frontier and naval adventures
This is the sixth book in Cyrus Townsend Brady's 'Fights and Fighters' series. It follows Brady's sometimes idiosyncratic approach to his project of fascinating insights into conflict and is divided into two broad sections. The first focuses on the drama that was the conquest of Central and South America, with emphasis on Panama and Balboa but also touching on Pizarro and Peru. The second part is an exciting selection of 'adventures;' featured are the account of the whaling ship Essex, the cruise of the Tonquin, a piece about the American hero John Paul Jones, an interesting account of Indian fighting along the Pitt River by the U. The Indian wars of the north west
This, the fifth volume in Cyrus Townsend Brady's well regarded series, American Fights and Fighters, differs somewhat in format from other its companion volumes. Whilst Brady is always informative, accurate, original and entertaining his books have a tendency to include material where the subject matter appears to have appealed to Brady at the time and was thereafter in need of a home in one of his works. This volume, Northwest Fights and Fighters, focuses specifically on two wars, the Nez Perce War and the Modoc War, which the United States Army fought against the indigenous Indian tribes of the north west in the period following the American Civil War. The Nez Perce War was fought against that tribe under Chief Joseph's inspired leadership and the Modoc War was a gruelling, bitter campaign fought in the inhospitable lava beds. The accounts and recollections of these two war comprise the entire book and Brady therefore deals with his subjects in some detail. He has particularly drawn upon the first hand narratives of those combatants who fought on both sides of the conflicts and this very much enhances the book's value, since these accounts rarely appear elsewhere in print. In the Nez Perce section Brady of course deals with the actions at White Bird Canyon, Cottonwood, Clearwater, Big Hole and all the pivotal aspects of the campaign. The Modoc War outraged the American people after the murder of the so called 'peace commissioners' by the Modoc leader Captain Jack and this and many other aspects of the campaign are dealt with in considerable depth. The conflicts of backwoods and high seas
This book, though not the first published in the series, is chronologically the first in Brady's essential cycle of books on the fights and fighters of the American nation. It includes the adventures of the early explorers of the North American continent including De Soto and the trials of the Huguenot colonies. No account of the period should ignore the rapacious activities of the 'Gentlemen of the Black Flag, ' Sir Henry Morgan and other pirates who plied their deadly trade under the Jolly Roger. The 18th century saw a decisive confrontation between Britain and France over no less an issue than which of those powers would dominate the globe in terms of language, culture, influence and trade. Cyrus Brady's, 'Fights and Fighters' series became popular after its fourth volume, Indian Fights and Fighters captured the public imagination and brought focus to his other works. Brady was a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction often calling on his extensive knowledge of his own country, the United States of America as inspiration. He has maintained his own consistent standard for the delivery of immediate and entertaining prose in volume two of the series-Revolutionary Fights and Fighters. In fact, some might claim that the subject matter of this book goes somewhat beyond his title, though not in ways that are likely to cause complaint among its readers. Certainly the first hundred pages describe highly interesting events in the American revolutionary period 1775-1783. These include the defence of Fort Sullivan, the Saratoga Campaign, Greene's campaign in the Carolinas and several of the lesser known naval actions of the conflict. From this point Brady takes his reader upon St. Clair's notorious and catastrophic campaign against the Indian tribes of the North West in 1791-4.
