Machine Learning Assisted Evolutionary Multi- and Many- Objective Optimization (1st ed. 2023): Dhish Kumar Saxena, Kalyanmoy... Machine Learning Assisted Evolutionary Multi- and Many- Objective Optimization (1st ed. 2023)
Dhish Kumar Saxena, Kalyanmoy Deb, Erik D. Goodman, Sukrit Mittal
R4,750 Discovery Miles 47 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on machine learning (ML) assisted evolutionary multi- and many-objective optimization (EMâO). EMâO algorithms, namely EMâOAs, iteratively evolve a set of solutions towards a good Pareto Front approximation. The availability of multiple solution sets over successive generations makes EMâOAs amenable to application of ML for different pursuits.  Recognizing the immense potential for ML-based enhancements in the EMâO domain, this book intends to serve as an exclusive resource for both domain novices and the experienced researchers and practitioners. To achieve this goal, the book first covers the foundations of optimization, including problem and algorithm types. Then, well-structured chapters present some of the key studies on ML-based enhancements in the EMâO domain, systematically addressing important aspects. These include learning to understand the problem structure, converge better, diversify better, simultaneously converge and diversify better, and analyze the Pareto Front. In doing so, this book broadly summarizes the literature, beginning with foundational work on innovization (2003) and objective reduction (2006), and extending to the most recently proposed innovized progress operators (2021-23). It also highlights the utility of ML interventions in the search, post-optimality, and decision-making phases pertaining to the use of EMâOAs. Finally, this book shares insightful perspectives on the future potential for ML based enhancements in the EMâOA domain. To aid readers, the book includes working codes for the developed algorithms. This book will not only strengthen this emergent theme but also encourage ML researchers to develop more efficient and scalable methods that cater to the requirements of the EMâOA domain. It serves as an inspiration for further research and applications at the synergistic intersection of EMâOA and ML domains.

Decolonizing "Multicultural" Counseling through Social Justice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015): Rachael D. Goodman, Paul C Gorski Decolonizing "Multicultural" Counseling through Social Justice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2015)
Rachael D. Goodman, Paul C Gorski
R2,792 Discovery Miles 27 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Multicultural counseling and psychology evolved as a response to the Eurocentrism prevalent in the Western healing professions and has been used to challenge the Eurocentric, patriarchal, and heteronormative constructs commonly embedded in counseling and psychology. Ironically, some of the practices and paradigms commonly associated with "multiculturalism" reinforce the very hegemonic practices and paradigms that multicultural counseling and psychology approaches were created to correct. In Decolonizing "Multicultural" Counseling through Social Justice, counseling and psychology scholars and practitioners examine this paradox through a social justice lens by questioning and challenging the infrastructure of dominance in society, as well as by challenging ourselves as practitioners, scholars, and activists to rethink our commitments. The authors analyze the ways well-meaning clinicians might marginalize clients and contribute to structural inequities despite multicultural or cross-cultural training, and offer new frameworks and skills to replace the essentializing and stereotyping practices that are widespread in the field. By addressing the power imbalances embedded in key areas of multicultural theory and practice, contributors present innovative methods for revising research paradigms, professional education, and hands-on practice to reflect a commitment to equity and social justice. Together, the chapters in this book model transformative practice in the clinic, the schools, the community, and the discipline. Among the topics covered: Rethinking racial identity development models. Queering multicultural competence in counseling. Developing a liberatory approach to trauma counseling. Decolonizing psychological practice in the context of poverty. Utilizing indigenous paradigms in counseling research. Addressing racism through intersectionality. A mind-opening text for multicultural counseling and psychology courses as well as other foundational courses in counseling and psychology education, Decolonizing "Multicultural" Counseling through Social Justice challenges us to let go of simplistic approaches, however well-intended, and to embrace a more transformative approach to counseling and psychology practice and scholarship.

The (p,n) Reaction and the Nucleon-Nucleon Force (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980): Charles D. Goodman The (p,n) Reaction and the Nucleon-Nucleon Force (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980)
Charles D. Goodman
R1,687 Discovery Miles 16 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the proceedings of the "Conference on the (p, n) Reaction and the Nucleon-Nucleon Force" held in Telluride, Colorado, March 29-31, 1979. The idea to hold this conference grew out of a program at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility to study the (p, n) reaction in the 50-200 MeV energy range. The first new Indiana data, in contrast to low energy data, showed features suggestive of a dominant one pion exchange interaction. It seemed desir able to review what was known about the fre.e and the effective nucleon-nucleon force and the connection between the low and high energy (p, n) data. Thus the conference was born. The following people served as the organizing committee: S. M. Austin, Michigan State University W. Bertozzi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology S. D. Bloom, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory C. C. Foster, Indiana University C. D. Goodman, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Conference Chairman) D. A. Lind, University of Colorado J. Rapaport, Ohio University G. R. Satch1er, Oak Ridge National Laboratory G. E. Walker, Indiana University R. L. Walter, Duke University and TUNL The sponsoring organizations were: Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, Durham, North Carolina Of course, the major credit for the success of the con ference must go to the speakers who diligently prepared their talks that are reproduced in this volume."

Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988): Charles J. Horowitz, Charles D.... Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1988)

R1,633 Discovery Miles 16 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The proceedings of the "International Conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes" are presented in this volume. This conference was held in Telluride, Colorado, March 14-17, 1988, and was the fourth in the Telluride series of nuclear physics conferences. A continuing theme in the Telluride conference series has been the complementarity of various intermediate-energy projectiles for elucidating the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear structure. Earlier conferences have contributed significantly to an understanding of spin currents in nuclei, in particular the distribution of Gamow-Teller strength using charge-exchange reactions. The previous conference on "Antinucleon and Nucleon Nucleus Interactions" compared nuclear information from tra tional probes to recent results from antinucleon reactions. The 1988 conference on Spin Observables of Nuclear Probes, put special emphasis on spin observables and brought together experts using spin information to probe nuclear structure. Spin observables have provided very detailed information about nuclear structure and reactions. Since the 1985 Telluride conference we have seen data from new focal plane polarimeters at LAMPF, TRIUMF, IUCF and elsewhere. In addition, spin observables provide an important common ground between electron and hadron scattering physics. In the future we look forward to new facilities such as NTOF for polarized neutron measurements at Los Alamos and a vigorous spin program at CEBAF."

The future of Brazilian Amazonia, the world's largest remaining tropical rainforest, hangs in the balance. Two decades of destructive development have provoked violent struggles for control over the region's resources, with disastrous social and environmental consequences. This multi-disciplinary collection reviews past experience but focusses on the latest phase of Amazonian settlement. Chapters by leading authorities examine such issues as colonisation in the most recent frontier areas, multinational mining projects, hydro-electric schemes, and the military occupation of Brazil's borders. After demonstrating how new government and business activities have exacerbated social tensions and ecological destruction, the volume considers alternative, more sustainable strategies.
