Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
In three previous books, through a selection of prose poems, the
author shared bits and pieces of a life, one comprised of complete
abandonment by a mother and the disconnected roles played by
extended family members, a life that eventually led to being placed
in foster care. Now, for the first time, with In the Care of
Strangers, he tells the entire story of what such a life was
actually like.
In this five part memoir, dependent on the seven deadly sins, the
author tries to reconstruct a painful journey of coming of age
under the literal care of strangers and the individuals that made
up the foster homes and hospitals that would help to shape a young
man's life, certainly a difficult life, riddled with abuse from the
start (Malice) and ending with greed and envy in a fourth and final
home. He finds and develops pride in himself while recuperating
from a paralysis.
How this young man attempts to survive the experiences of foster
care, while also having to contend with a disability, and still
manages to try to simply achieve graduation from high school, with
a goal towards college, is a testament to a human spirit beyond
measure. This riveting story, told through an innocent, almost
child-like voice of a boy shocked into care, then as an older man
who has come to terms with his situation(The Unclaimed), and
finally through the poetry, should be taken as an inspiration for
many.
It was in the year of our Lord, 800, when the Viking invasions had
begun and we feared for our lives.
On the Isle of Iona in a Christian monastery, Aeden and his
brethren work to transcribe the Gospel of John. Together, they
create parchment and intricate designs, illuminating them with fine
inks and gold leaf. Their meticulous hands and virtuous hearts
transcribe God's word.
Unfortunately, the monastery is not immune to the barbarians
invading from the north: the Vikings. Fearful for their precarious
position and important work, the Abbot Father Cellarch enlists the
help of a Viking king who values Christianity. King Blachmac
pledges protection, leaving his daughter Osla in their care as the
raids continue.
Osla and Aedan, drawn to one another, develop a friendship as
work continues on the Gospels. During this tumultuous time, the
Book of John is completed amid stress, love, and accusations of
murder. These events bring the star-crossed lovers closer.
Together, they save the abbey and their precious work.
Scriptorium is Aedan, Osla, and their brethren's story of
courage, where pure hearts triumph over barbaric evils. Little did
they know their work would become Ireland's finest national
treasure: The Book of Kells.
In I Use To Fall Down, his first major compi-lation of his poems,
which was favorably received, Mr. Holiday took the reader on a
whirlwind of emotional topics, from nuclear
proliferation(Washerwoman Blues) to starving children in Somalia
(Il Walad), from police bru-tality (Rest In Peace, Cop Killers, and
When the Cops Drive By) to reflections on his twenty-one years
under the New York City foster care system(Somehow, Mama Knew, Stop
Laughing At Me, and What Dad Might Have Said). He has attempted to
be honest, some have said too brutally honest, about abuse, the
very abuse he has experienced at the hands of care-takers and that
abuse which he sees perpetrated by man against man. With Letters to
Osama..., Mr. Holiday runs the gambit, again, of topics as current
as the war over Iraq, the ugliness of 9-ll, and he continues to be
brutally honest in his criticisms and observations of the Bush
Administration, the UN, and other world leaders and the roles they
play in the world4s conflicts(foreign and domes-tic).D. Alexander
Holiday is a native New Yorker, raised in foster care and was
stricken with Gillian Barre Syndrome (also called Ascending
Paralysis) at the age of ten. He holds a Master of Arts degree from
the State University of New York at Albany. He is currently working
on his autobiography, In the Care of Strangers: The Autobiography
of A Foster Child. His work can be found on the web at:

Despite wide acceptance that the attributes of living creatures
have appeared through a cumulative evolutionary process guided
chiefly by natural selection, many human activities have seemed
analytically inaccessible through such an approach. Prominent
evolutionary biologists, for example, have described morality as
contrary to the direction of biological evolution, and moral
philosophers rarely regard evolution as relevant to their
discussions. "The Biology of Moral Systems" adopts the position
that moral questions arise out of conflicts of interest, and that
moral systems are ways of using confluences of interest at lower
levels of social organization to deal with conflicts of interest at
higher levels. Moral systems are described as systems of indirect
reciprocity: humans gain and lose socially and reproductively not
only by direct transactions, but also by the reputations they gain
from the everyday flow of social interactions. The author develops
a general theory of human interests, using senescence and effort
theory from biology, to help analyze the patterning of human
lifetimes. He argues that the ultimate interests of humans are
reproductive, and that the concept of morality has arisen within
groups because of its contribution to unity in the context,
ultimately, of success in intergroup competition. He contends that
morality is not easily relatable to universals, and he carries this
argument into a discussion of what he calls the greatest of all
moral problems, the nuclear arms race. "Crammed with sage
observations on moral dilemmas and many reasons why an
understanding of evolution based on natural selection will advance
thinking in finding practical solutions to our most difficult
social problems." u "Annals of the American Academy of Political

Applied Ergonomics is a concise text focusing on the practical
applications of ergonomics and is derived from the annual,
ground-breaking, successful conference of the same name. This is
not a conference proceedings but a text of applications, filling a
niche in the ergonomics professional market for a book that is
strong on the applications side of the field rather than the purely
academic. This book covers a range of topics related to
applications in engineering, medicine, and health & safety, and
incorporates a number of case studies and examples. The book is
split into a number of thematic sections which focus on support and
service jobs, ergonomics in the office, health management and
design. Within these sections are chapters on the use of the
Internet, ergonomics programs, and the economics of ergonomics.
Those involved with the application of ergonomics techniques will
find this collection both informative and interesting.
"Sociology of the Arts" is a comprehensive overview of the
sociology of art and an authoritative work of scholarship by a
leading expert in the field. The book synthesizes the various
theoretical models of art sociology, and provides empirical
examples as well as stimulating exemplars of sociological work on
the arts. Case studies of art works are from both ends of the
cultural spectrum: fine arts (theatre, dance, symphony, opera) and
popular arts (Hollywood movies, pop music, pulp fiction, TV drama,
comedy and advertising). These studies, combined with the book's
considerable theoretical breadth and insight, explore how art is
created, distributed, received, consumed, and used by people who
experience it. The book also discusses the newly emerging question
of the art object itself, and the meaning of art works.
"Sociology of the Arts" is a clearly written, well-organized
synthesis for students, and a unique contribution to the field.
This international selection of perspectives, empirical research,
and case studies makes this book essential for teaching and
learning the sociology of art, and will be of great interest to
scholars.

Art and the Challenge of Markets Volumes 1 & 2 examine the
politics of art and culture in light of the profound changes that
have taken place in the world order since the 1980s and 1990s. The
contributors explore how in these two decades, the neoliberal or
market-based model of capitalism started to spread from the
economic realm to other areas of society. As a result, many aspects
of contemporary Western societies increasingly function in the same
way as the private enterprise sector under traditional market
capitalism. This second volume analyses the relationships of art
with contemporary capitalist economies and instrumentalist cultural
policies, and examines several varieties of capitalist-critical and
alternative art forms that exist in today's art worlds. It also
addresses the vexed issues of art controversies and censorship. The
chapters cover issues such as the culturalization of the economy,
aesthetics and anti-aesthetics, the societal benefits of works of
art, art's responsibility to society, "artivism", activist arts as
protest and capitalism-critical works, and controversies over
nudity in art, as well as considering the marketisation of emerging
visual arts worlds in East Asia. The book ends with the a
concluding chapter suggesting that even in today's marketized and
commercialized environments, art will find a way. Both volumes
provide students and scholars across a range of disciplines with an
incisive, comparative overview of the politics of art and culture
and national, international and transnational art worlds in
contemporary capitalism.

considers a broad range of national cultural policies from European
and North American countries, and examines the strengthening of
international and transnational art worlds in music, visual arts,
film, and television. The chapters cover cultural policy and
political culture in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany,
France, Switzerland, the Nordic countries, the Balkans, and
Slovenia, and address the extent to which Western nations have
shifted from welfare-state to market-based ideologies. Tensions
between centres and peripheries in global art worlds are
considered, as well as complex interactions between nations and
international and transnational art worlds, and regional variations
in the audiovisual market. Both volumes provide students and

This volume brings together more than a decade of information
collected in the field and lab on the naked mole-rat
(Heterocephalus glaber), a northeast African mammal unique for its
physical characteristics and eusociality. Nearly blind and
virtually hairless, naked mole-rats inhabit large subterranean
colonies in which only one female and her one to three mates
conceive offspring, while the young from previous litters maintain
and defend the group as do workers in colonies of the social
insects. In this first major treatise on naked mole-rats an
international group of researchers covers such topics as the
evolution of eusociality, phylogeny and systematics of the rodent
family Bathyergidae, population and behavioral ecology and genetics
of naked mole-rats in the field, vocal and nonvocal behaviors,
social organization and divisions of labor within colonies, and
climatic, social, and physiological factors affecting growth,
reproduction, and reproductive suppression. In addition to the
editors, the contributors are D. H. Abbott, M. W. Allard, N. C.
Bennett, R. A. Brett, S. H. Braude, B. Crespi, S. V. Edwards, C. G.
Faulkes, L. M. George, R. L. Honeycutt, E. A. Lacey, C. E. Liddell,
