Towards Illiberal Democracy (Hardcover): D. Bell, D. Brown, K. Jayasuriya, D. Jones Towards Illiberal Democracy (Hardcover)
D. Bell, D. Brown, K. Jayasuriya, D. Jones
R2,781 Discovery Miles 27 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book challenges the view that liberal democracy is the inevitable outcome of economic modernization. Focusing on the stable and prosperous societies of Pacific Asia, it argues that contemporary political arrangements are legitimised by the values of hierarchy, familism and harmony. An arrangement that clearly contrasts with a western understanding of political liberalism and the communicatory democracy it facilitates. Instead of political change resulting from a demand for autonomy by interest groups in civil society, the adoption of democratic practice in Asia ought to be viewed primarily as a state strategy to manage socio-economic change.

The Presidents of the French Fifth Republic (Hardcover): D. Bell, J. Gaffney The Presidents of the French Fifth Republic (Hardcover)
D. Bell, J. Gaffney
R1,841 Discovery Miles 18 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume brings together French and British scholars of France to analyse one of French politics' most intellectually compelling phenomena, the presidency of the republic. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of that leadership as well as the way that executive power has been established in the Fifth Republic; how presidential power and the subsequent full scale development of "personality politics" developed within an essentially party-driven, democratic and, most importantly, republican system. Hence the authors in this volume examine the phenomenon of a strong presidency in the French republican framework. The individual chapters focus on the presidency and upon the individual presidents and the way in which they have addressed their own relation to the presidencies they presided over on top of a range of other factors informing their terms of office. A conclusion sums up and appraises the contemporary role of the French presidency within the party system and the republic. The project has generated a great deal of interest in the French political studies community.

Gregory D. Bell
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the late eleventh century, tens of thousands of people-knights and peasants, men and women, priests and lords-set out on a long and arduous journey to retake the holy city of Jerusalem. They traveled thousands of miles across difficult terrain and into hostile territory. How did they accomplish this remarkable task? How did they move through such an ever-changing and diverse landscape? Logistics of the First Crusade: Acquiring Supplies amid Chaos looks at the plans that they made and the methods they implemented to sustain themselves on this remarkable expedition in an attempt to understand how they persisted on the First Crusade. The crusaders sought to implement order as they traveled, moving with intent and adapting when confronted with hardship. In the end, they succeeded largely through their logistical perseverance.

Michel Osteaux; Edited by (associates) A.R. Bakker, D. Bell, R. Mattheus, D. Meyer-Ebrecht, …
R1,484 Discovery Miles 14 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The term picture archiving and communications system (PACS) was initiated during the first International conference and workshop on the topic sponsored by The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) in Newport Beach, California in 1982. The research and development (R&D) progress for PACS has been slow until 1988. The earlier PACS modules were mostly off the shelf components connected together to solve a very specific clinical problem. The three major players in PACS R&D are the European countries, United States of America, and Japan. For various reasons, the European coun tries concentrated in modeling and simulation, U.S.A. pre ferred in-house development or purchased PACS modules from a manufacturer, whereas Japan organized the PACS as a national project. Between 1989 and 1990 PACS R&D took a dramatic positive turn. Large scale P ACS projects were planned and some are of implementation, especially in newly con at various stages structed hospitals. Examples are the Hokkaido University, Japan; Hammersmith Hospital, United Kingdom; Social and Medical Center East (SMZO), Vienna, Austria; the U.S. Armed Force Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support (MDIS) project; and the UCLA Medical Plaza ambulatory care center. Another phenomenon is the organization of the EC-countries which provides a tremendous impetus for the European PACS R&D efforts. This book "Hospital Integrated Picture Archiving and Communication Systems: edited by Professor M. Osteaux and others is a direct product from these efforts."

Agrarianism has received relatively little attention from scholars interested in the modern history of Eastern Europe. Contending that an understanding of the agrarian constribution is necessary for an appraisal of the full dynamic of Eastern European politics, John D. Bell explors the history of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union, the strongest of the East European organizations. Tracing the union's career from its founding to its overthrow in 1923, the author discusses the reasons for its appearnce, its ideology and program, and its accomplishments and failure in both domestic and foreign policy. He concentrates in particular on the career of Alexander Stamboliski, who guided and inspired the BANU during its rise to power. This book is thus a comprehensive, objective biography of both a movement and a man. John D. Bell is Associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Many of the world's fisheries are in trouble - they no longer yield the catches, and potential profits, they once did. The habitats that support fisheries have been damaged by pollution and other irresponsible use of coastal land. Destructive fishing methods like trawling and blast fishing have also changed fish habitats resulting in support of fewer fish.
The authors draw on more than 1000 scientific papers covering 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates. From this large literature, they distill 20 lessons for assessing and guiding the use of restocking and stock enhancement in the management of invertebrate fisheries.
- Written by 7 expert authors
- Covers 11 groups/species of marine invertebrates
- Reviews over 1000 scientific papers
- Identifies 20 lessons that can be learned from past restocking and stock enhancement initiatives
- Proposes a new approach to assess the potential value of hatchery releases to
complement other forms of management
- Assesses progress of disciple against the blueprint for a responsible approach
