For two decades, Understanding Clinical Papers has been helping students and professionals understand the research that supports evidence-based practice. Now in its fourth edition, this popular introductory textbook covers every major aspect of reading and evaluating clinical research literature, from identifying the aims and objectives of a paper to analysing the data with different multivariable methods. Numerous excerpts from actual clinical research papers make learning real and immediate, supported by a unique visual approach that reinforces key points and connects examples with the chapter material. The fourth edition includes extensively revised content throughout, including four brand-new chapters covering qualitative studies, Poisson regression, studies of complex interventions, and research using previously collected data. New and updated material discusses the difference between clinical and statistical significance, the consequences of multiple testing and methods of correction, how topic guides are used to explore and explain participants' experiences, standardised guidelines for writing trials and reviews, and much more. Offering clear explanations of important research-related topics, this reader-friendly resource: Offers a clear, concise, and accessible approach to learning how to read and analyse clinical research literature Features new coverage of qualitative research, including descriptive studies, sampling and populations, and identifying, summarising, and measuring qualitative characteristics Provides new material on missing data, sub-group analysis, feasibility and pilot studies, cluster randomised trials, and adaptive trial designs Includes new tables, abstracts, and excerpts from recent clinical research literature Understanding Clinical Papers is essential reading for all healthcare professionals and students, particularly those involved in clinical work and medical research, as well as general readers wanting to improve their understanding of research literature.
Correctly understanding and using medical statistics is a key skill for all medical students and health professionals. In an informal and friendly style, Medical Statistics from Scratch provides a practical foundation for everyone whose first interest is probably not medical statistics. Keeping the level of mathematics to a minimum, it clearly illustrates statistical concepts and practice with numerous real-world examples and cases drawn from current medical literature. Medical Statistics from Scratch is an ideal learning partner for all medical students and health professionals needing an accessible introduction, or a friendly refresher, to the fundamentals of medical statistics.
By the time you've read this book, you'll be ready to design your own research project Not everyone in clinical research is a scientific investigator. In fact, a large proportion of health professionals undertaking a research project are working in clinical care, as junior doctors, nurses or allied health professionals. For them a book that begins with the basics of study design and takes them through all the stages to data collection, analysis, and submission for publication is vital. "Getting Started in Health Research" is the answer. It provides fundamental information on: Framing the research question Performing the literature search Choosing the study design Collecting data Getting funding Recruiting participants Writing your paper Lively case studies provide a continuous narrative, addressing the pitfalls and problems that can occur. Calling upon their vast experience of teaching health research methodology, these authors have turned a seemingly daunting task into a challenging and enjoyable prospect. "The companion of Understanding Clinical Papers ""www.wiley.com/buy/"9780470091302 Reviews of "Understanding Clinical Papers" ..".an excellent basis for all who intend to write scientific texts as well as those reading, evaluating, and trying to understand the results...""Clinical Chemistry," May 2007 "What makes this book unique is that each point presented is illustrated with excerpts from actual papers, often three or four per chapter...this is a very effective teaching device.""Journal of the American Medical Association," December 26, 2006 "What strikes the reader ... straight away is clarity ... promises to become a recommended text for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.""Journal of Tropical Pediatrics," September 2006 "This book should be an essential addition to the personal libraries of all health care workers . . . Currently there are many organizations within the Air Force who are developing and implementing Knowledge Management initiatives within their organization. Air Force resources are being committed to fund, implement, and support these initiatives without any overarching Air Force Knowledge Vision or Knowledge Strategy to guide these efforts. The purpose of this research is to provide a framework model and framework implementation process that can be used to guide the identification, selection, and eventual implementation of Air Force knowledge management projects. An initial Literature Review was conducted and the findings were used to develop a framework model to guide the identification and selection of appropriate knowledge management initiatives that are consistent with organizational strategy and strategic objectives. Next, a Delphi study was conducted to evaluate the proposed framework and associated framework implementation methodology using four criteria: completeness, comprehensiveness, accuracy, and usefulness. The Delphi committee consisted of representatives from the Department of Defense, Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Defense University.
The focus of this book is on mediation, a third party intervention role that can be undertaken by supervisors, managers, human resource professionals, marriage and family therapists, teachers, mediators, peace keepers, and parents. The authors make a strong case for the central role of empathy in promoting a successful mediation, especially when ongoing relationships between the parties are at stake. This book provides a thoughtful study of the important role of empathy in mediation through the development of a theoretical model to explain the effectiveness of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) mediation. The theory building process used in this book, as well as the list of conditions for a successful mediation, can be broadly applied to other third party intervention methods. Intended Audience: Mediators; Conflict Resolution and Third Party Interveners (managers, supervisors, human resources representatives) students, teachers, and professionals; Marriage and Family Therapists; and Attorneys. "While one of the aims of this book is providing a welcome
beginning theoretical basis for the use of empathy in the mediation
process, there is much crossover into counseling, parenting and
other arenas that involve conflict in relationship. The humanity
and authenticity of the authors comes through in a way that makes
this book accessible and appealing to readers well beyond the
academic arena. It provides support and clarity for those seeking
to understand and adopt the practice of empathy either personally
or professionally." "This book provides a framework for understanding why mediation
works when it works and therefore points the way to how mediation
can be made to work more reliably. By highlighting the role of
empathy-from the mediator and between the parties-in supporting
many of the conditions for successful mediation, the authors
provide a path for further research with clear implications for
practitioners." "I'm grateful for all the care and effort taken in this book to
provide a theoretical container that can hold the power of NVC to
guide the mediation process. I'm imagining many ripples of benefit
for both the NVC community and the mediation community for the
stimulation of future research that can define best practices for
cultivating connection in the midst of conflict." "This book makes an important contribution to the theoretical
development of mediation." "As one who teaches peace studies, it is exciting to have the
tools Bowers and Moffett offer. We often tell students that
conflicting parties have to see things from the others'
perspective. This book starts us digging deeper into the 'how'-how
can mediators use empathy effectively in the course of mediation to
get the parties to understand better the feelings and needs of each
other? Moving beyond thinking about interests and positions-and how
to do so-can help my students envision how real change is possible,
be it in conflicts overseas or in their own lives."
