The International Congress of Linguists meets every five years to
reflect the development of Linguistics, the close study of language
and languages. In 2018, for the first time, the Congress is being
held in Africa. The African continent is blessed with hundreds of
languages which act as local repositories of culture and
interaction. South Africa itself has eleven official languages,
plus Sign Language, many heritage languages, and new languages of
global movements and migration. This book of selected papers from
the Congress will provide an up-to-date specialist overview of the
main fields of Linguistics. The papers will broadly address the
history of languages, structure, acquisition, diversity and use. At
the same time due regard will be paid to the African continent in
several of the papers in connection with its linguistic diversity,
multilingualism and educational and societal concerns. This
collection is therefore meant to affirm the value of the languages
of Africa, of languages and Linguistics in general, as well as to
inspire and equip younger scholars to undertake advanced research
into language in its many facets.

Philosophy in both Australia and New Zealand has been has been
experiencing, for some time now, something of a 'golden age',
exercising an influence in the global arena that is
disproportionate to the population of the two countries. To capture
the distinctive and internationally recognised contributions
Australasian philosophers have made to their discipline, a series
of public talks by leading Australasian philosophers was convened
at various literary events and festivals across Australia and New
Zealand from 2006 to 2009. These engaging and often entertaining
talks attracted large audiences, and covered diverse themes ranging
from local histories of philosophy (in particular, the fortunes of
philosophy in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and New
Zealand); to discussions of specific topics (including love, free
will, religion, ecology, feminism, and civilisation), especially as
these have featured in the Australasian philosophy; and to
examinations of the intellectual state of universities in
Australasia at the beginning of the twenty-first century. These
talks are now collected here for the first time, to provide not
only students and scholars, but also the wider community with a
deeper appreciation of the philosophical heritage of Australia and
New Zealand.
One hundred fifty years ago, Texas was very different. A rural
population was spread thinly across the eastern and central parts
of the state, and vast lands in the western regions were still
undisturbed. Texas's habitats and biota changed dramatically as its
population increased and people spread across the landscape. In
Texas Natural History: A Century of Change (2002), David Schmidly
chronicled the changes that occurred during the twentieth century.
In this second edition, Schmidly is joined by colleagues Robert and
Lisa Bradley of Texas Tech University to extend that story over the
first two decades of the twenty-first century. The focus of Texas
Natural History in the 21st Century continues to be on the
mammalian fauna of the state, and it includes a reprinting of
Vernon Bailey's 1905 "The Biological Survey of Texas" with new
annotations and updates. In the rest of the book, the authors
discuss changes in landscapes, land use, and the status of Texas
mammals in the last hundred years. The authors present current
challenges to conserving the natural history of Texas and suggest
long-term solutions to those challenges, including actions focused
on both private and public lands. As Texas approaches the daunting
challenge of conserving its wildlife, Texas Natural History in the
21st Century serves as a rallying cry for addressing the scenarios
imperiling Texas's natural history in our present day and in the
future.
The Texan doctor who examined President Kennedy after his fatal
shooting in Dallas talks about his findings and speculations.
