Family relations are undergoing dramatic changes globally and locally. At the same time, certain features of family life endure. This popular book, now in a fully updated second edition, presents a comprehensive assessment of recent research on 'family', parenting, childhood and interpersonal ties. A Sociology of Family Life queries assumptions about a disintegration of 'the family' by revealing a remarkable persistence of commitment and reciprocity across cultures, within new as well as traditional family forms. Yet, while new kinds of intimate relationships such as 'friends as family' and LGBTQ+ intimacies become commonplace, such personal relationships can still be difficult to negotiate in the face of wider structural norms. With a focus on factors such as class, gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality, this new edition highlights inequalities that influence and curb families and personal life transnationally. Alongside substantial new material on cultural and digital transformations, the book features extensive updates on issues ranging from demography, migration, ageing and government policies to reproductive technologies, employment and care. With a global focus, and blending theory with real-life examples, this insightful and engaging book will remain indispensable to students across the social sciences.
First published in 1999, this book examines the 'how' and 'why' of strategic planning, illustrates the vital role it plays in our day-to-day lives and explores its potential for helping to ensure the future viability of humanity and of the cultures and societies in which we live. The authors describe the processes and major impediments in high level strategic planning, introduce a new mechanism, new tools and processes and provide a number of case studies to demonstrate the use of the proposed methodology. 'Strategic Planning: Processes, Tools and Outcomes' will be invaluable reading for academics and students of planning and for planning practitioners around the world.

Rapid developments in the field of genetic algorithms along with the popularity of the first edition precipitated this completely revised, thoroughly updated second edition of The Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms. Like its predecessor, this edition helps practitioners stay up to date on recent developments in the field and provides material they can use productively in their own endeavors.
Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 3: Complex Coding
Systems contains computer-code examples for the development of
genetic algorithm systems - compiling them from an array of
practitioners in the field.
Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 3: Complex Coding Systems contains computer-code examples for the development of genetic algorithm systems - compiling them from an array of practitioners in the field. Each contribution of this singular resource includes: unique code segments documentation description of the operations performed rationale for the chosen approach problems the code overcomes or addresses Practical Handbook of Genetic Algorithms, Volume 3: Complex Coding Systems complements the first two volumes in the series by offering examples of computer code. The first two volumes dealt with new research and an overview of the types of applications that could be taken with GAs. This volume differs from its predecessors by specifically concentrating on specific functions in genetic algorithms, serving as the only compilation of useful and usable computer code in the field.
Fluorine is unique in that it is possible to replace hydrogen by fluorine either singly or multiply, in an organic molecule and, in so-doing create a potentially infinite extension to organic chemistry that is entirely synthetic. The excitement of the chemistry of these systems stems from the unique reactions that ensue and the "special-effects"that introduction of fluorine impart. Indeed, these effects are now exploited in a remarkable array of applications across the whole of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and plant-protection industries, although this is not widely appreciated. In this book, we have gathered authors with immense experience in various aspects of their field and each is a world-authority on the important topics they have described. Some topics, like the use of elemental fluorine, and enzymes in synthesis, are relatively new areas that are rapidly growing. We dedicate the book to a long standing friend, Professor George Olah, in the year of his 70th birthday, in recognition of his massive achievements. This book explores the diverse ways people engage with social media to build, maintain and display personal networks. Despite the remarkable technological possibilities for global networking, most people's online connections are personal, localized or stem from previous local connections. Yet this study also shows how social media are used to generate new modes of self presentation, interaction, and etiquette. Deborah Chambers develops a theory of mediated intimacies to understand how digital communication coincides with new intimacies and meanings of 'friendship' as features of a networked society. The book combines sociological debates about intimacy, family and friendship with media studies of computer mediated communication. How social media transforms personal life is investigated through five broad themes of social media engagement: the presentation of online self; teenage friendships; home, families and new media; digital dating; virtual community and online social capital. The author explains how social media technology contributes to a dramatic reconfiguration of our ideas about intimacy and friendship.

The excitement of the chemistry of organofluorine compounds stems from the unique reactions that arise and the "special effects" that introduction of fluorine impart on a molecule. Indeed, these effects are now exploited in a remarkable array of applications the whole of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and plant-protection industries. In this two-volume set, we have gathered authors with immense experience in various aspects of their fields and each is a world-authority on the important topics which they have described. The first volume treats the chemistry of fluorinated alkenes, which are important "building-blocks" for the synthesis of a range of fluorinated systems and are used widely in industry. The second volume is directed to techniques and synthons for obtaining fluorinated compounds.

Essays on English medieval ecclesiastical history, focusing particularly on administration. Dorothy Owen has made a major contribution over half a century to our knowledge of the history of the English church, especially but not exclusively in the middle ages. While her published work has focused largely on eastern England, she has never lost sight of the wider universal context, and is one of the leading scholars of medieval canon law. This volume of essays on English medieval ecclesiastical history is presented to her as a tribute from friends, colleagues and former pupils; their contents range from the pre-Conquest period to the eve of the Reformation, but are all concerned with the practicalities of ecclesiastical administration and jurisdiction. Contributors: JOAN VARLEY, DAVID CHAMBERS, C.N.L. BROOKE, MARK BAILEY, MARTIN BRETT, M.J. FRANKLIN, CHRISTOPHER HARPER-BILL, ROSALIND HILL, RALPH HOULBROOKE, BRIAN KEMP, F. DONALD LOGAN, A.K. Marking the 10th anniversary of the Breastfeeding and Feminism International Conference, Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity is the third and final volume in this series. The opening two chapters address changes over the past decade in U.S. and global policy. Part 2 focuses on the importance of centering women's experiences in conversations about infant feeding, with a particular focus on the ways women's experiences are shaped by race and ethnicity. Part 3 offers solutions and strategies across the social ecology. Breastfeeding, Social Justice, and Equity is a highly readable volume that increases our understanding of the forces that influence breastfeeding, and outlines steps we can take to improve outcomes for both mothers and babies.
This Is A New Release Of The Original 1882 Edition.
As an immigrant and a newcomer to the United States, he started as an inspector in a plant run by the Ford Motor Company in the Chicago area manufacturing jet engines during the Korean war. He eventually became a citizen and continued in industry until he retired in 1985 as Vice President of a company based in Bridgeport Connecticut. It could only happen in America.

1882. It is remarkable that Hermes anticipated modern philosophy by insisting there is no void in nature, and that none of the works of The God can become extinct or perish, but, if disappearing, become some other essence or nature and renovated into another form. Thus, it appears he affirmed the future eternity of existing matter and deduced from this the immortality of the human body. Divided into three parts entitled: Poemandres; excerpts from Hermes by Stobaeus; and notices of Hermes in the fathers.
The poems are simple. They are examples of love and life as we see them in this world today. Each one has a message which it is hoped that you can gain something from. Do enjoy them as much as the author did writing them.
