A surprise attack on American soil and a holy war waged under the
guise of an ancient religion . . . A nation of zealots
indoctrinated to hate Western Civilization and a culture ignoring
reason in favor of mindless violence . . . A cabal of militarists
conditioned to elect suicide as a battle strategy and celebrate
death for divine reward! Headlines from today's war on terrorism?
No--these were the themes of America's war with twentieth-century
Japan. Joining the Navy to face these fearsome enemies,
seventeen-year-old Charlie misses the action in World War II by
mere days. Then, directed to occupy the former foe's homeland
instead, he remains behind when the war's heroes have all returned
to a welcoming nation. Working and enduring through the months,
Charlie records his daily thoughts while growing to respect the
Japanese people--and does his best to find adventure along the way!
A distinguished group of Aristotelian scholars and contemporary metaphysicians discusses Aristotle's theory of the unity and identity of substances. The questions of ontology, explanation, and methodology with which they deal remain central to metaphysics today. This book sets a new agenda for Aristotelian metaphysics.
Relating Difficulty offers insight into the nature of difficulty in
relationships across a broad range of human experience. Whether
dealing with in-laws or ex-spouses, long-distance relationships or
power and status in the workplace, difficulty is an all too common
feature of daily life. Relating Difficulty brings the academic
understanding of relational processes to the everyday problems
people face at home and at work. These essays represent a
groundbreaking collection of the multidisciplinary conceptual and
empirical work that currently exists on the topic. Along with
issues such as chronic illness and money problems, contributors
investigate contexts of relational difficulty ranging from everyday
gossip, the workplace and shyness to more dangerous sexual
"hookups" and partner abuse. Drawing on evidence presented in the
volume, editors D. Charles Kirkpatrick, Steve Duck, and Megan K.
Foley explain how relational problems do not emerge solely from
individuals or even from the relationship itself. Instead, they
arise from triangles of connection and negotiation between
relational partners, contexts, and outsiders. The volume challenges
the simple notion that relating difficulty is just about problems
with "difficult people" and offers some genuinely novel insights
into a familiar everyday experience. This exceptional volume is
essential reading for practitioners, researchers and students of
relationships across a wide range of disciplines as well as anyone
wanting greater understanding of relational functioning in everyday
life and at work.

Nests, Eggs, and Incubation brings together a global team of
leading authorities to provide a comprehensive overview of the
fascinating and diverse field of avian reproduction. Starting with
a new assessment of the evolution of avian reproductive biology in
light of recent research, the book goes on to cover four broad
areas: the nest, the egg, incubation, and the study of avian
reproduction. New research on nest structures, egg traits, and life
history is incorporated, whilst contemporary methodologies such as
self-contained temperature probes and citizen science are also
discussed. Applied chapters describe how biological knowledge can
be applied to challenges such as urbanisation and climate change.
The book concludes by suggesting priorities for future research.
This book builds upon the foundations laid down by Charles
Deeming's 2002 work Avian Incubation (available for readers of this
book to access online for free), much of which remains relevant
today. Read in conjunction with this previous volume, it provides
an up-to-date and thorough review of egg biology, nest function,
and incubation behaviour, which will be an essential resource for
students of avian biology, as well as both professional and amateur
ornithologists working in the field of avian reproduction.

This book reviews comprehensively incubation effects on embryonic
development in birds and reptiles and presents the first ever
synthesis of data from these two vertebrate classes. The book is in
three parts. The first deals with the structure, shape and function
of eggs. The second examines the effects of the four main
parameters on the process of incubation: temperature, water
relations, respiratory gas exchange, and turning. The third section
deals with early embryonic development and the methods used to
investigate and manipulate the embryo. Further chapters deal with
aestivation, megapodes and oviparity. International experts in each
field have contributed to this extensively referenced volume and it
will be of great interest not only to research biologists, but also
to bird and reptile breeders, whether in commercial organisations
or in zoos.
