the nature and impact of parental substance misuse on children and
families using the latest evidence * Explores how research and
theories might help inform professionals or non-professionals
assessing families affected by parents who misuse drugs or alcohol
* Provides an in-depth discussion of Motivational Interviewing,
including a critical discussion of the challenges and limitations
involved in using it in child and family settings * Considers the
wider implications of the findings for practice and policy and

Uses techniques from psychological science and legal theory to
explore police interrogation in the United States Understanding
Police Interrogation provides a single comprehensive source for
understanding issues relating to police interrogation and
confession. It sheds light on the range of factors that may
influence the outcome of the interrogation of a suspect, which ones
make it more likely that a person will confess, and which may also
inadvertently lead to false confessions. There is a significant
psychological component to police interrogations, as interrogators
may try to build rapport with the suspect, or trick them into
thinking there is evidence against them that does not exist. Also
important is the extent to which the interrogator is convinced of
the suspect’s guilt, a factor that has clear ramifications for
today’s debates over treatment of black suspects and other people
of color in the criminal justice system. The volume employs a
totality of the circumstances approach, arguing that a number of
integrated factors, such as the characteristics of the suspect, the
characteristics of the interrogators, interrogation techniques and
location, community perceptions of law enforcement, and
expectations for jurors and judges, all contribute to the nature of
interrogations and the outcomes and perceptions of the criminal
justice system. The authors argue that by drawing on this approach
we can better explain the likelihood of interrogation outcomes,
including true and false confessions, and provide both scholars and
practitioners with a greater understanding of best practices going
forward.

'Children of the Bund' introduces us to the Wagner family, German
immigrants to the United States right after World War I. Carl and
Leona tried to raise their family the best they could, but their
children needed discipline the parents were unable to provide. The
children were introduced first to the 'Free Society of Teutonia', a
pro-German group that had open ties with the Nazi movement. After a
few years, this group was supplanted by the German-American Bund,
an umbrella group that had secret ties to the Nazi government but
from the outside appeared to be pro-American. Perverting young
minds in summer camps through a pro-Nazi curriculum and
militaristic drilling, young Carl Jr. and his peers were Nazified.
The control of their minds was completed with the opening of a
school which finished the Nazification process, teaching the
virtues of a pro-Nazi lifestyle. Young Carl Jr. is a finished Nazi
product by the time he attends the German-American rally held at
the Madison Square Garden, February 22nd, 1940. There he pledges
his allegiance to Adolf Hitler and makes contact with Fritz Kuhn,
the leader of the Bund. Any chance at him not joining the German
Army is dashed when his fiance is killed returning home from the
Bund rally. He leaves home and travels to New York, where he signs
up to travel to Germany. Once in Germany, he joins the German Army
and applies for, and is accepted, in the Luftwaffe as a pilot. In
'Flight of the Jackal', Carl faces the rigors not only of
acceptance by the Germans, but also a group of German-American
pilots he eventually winds up with. It becomes complicated for Carl
when he becomes second in command for a secret mission. When the
mission is exposed as an attack on Washington D.C. the day after
the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, with the intent to kill President
Roosevelt, his inner-conscious begins to speak to him. His doubts
about total betrayal to his birth country nag him, even though he
continues his training for the mission. Arriving at a secret
airbase in Oklahoma, on an Indian reservation, Carl is introduced
to a beautiful Indian maiden, who becomes his final chance for
redemption. Facing his inner demons and the love he has for her,
Yearling Fawn, Carl is driven to have the most serious doubts about
his decisions in life. The fate of the world might rest on the
final decision he makes."
Whether riding his fiery black stalion, dancing with royalty in
London, or dodging his enemies through the Scottish woods, former
resistance fighter and M16 agent, Henri Bolkonsky, lives life on
the edge. Sent to the Lothian Academy in the far reaches of
Scotland to hide from a band of ex-Nazis determined to assassinate
him in their effort to stop him from testifying at the Nuremberg
Trials, he meets trouble from another source, students who believe
he himself is a Nazi. With his location in Scotland revealed by a
newspaper article, Henri's survival skills are put to the test, but
always before him is his goal of retribution for family members
murdered by the Nazis as he was forced to watch. Henri daringly
dodges his pursuers through London and across Scotland to a
stunning and emotional conclusion.
