Filled with words of love, adoration, and of the pain of
passion, I reflect my sentiments toward my life journey. The
greatness that I see in God andthe splendors I see in all His
creation are made manifest through words from my heart. At times,
when I was spiritually exhausted, the Lord Himselfinspired me and
gave me words of comfort which I was compelled to record on paper.
And when my flesh began to get the best of me, I was constrained
towrite in order to release that which was burning inside. Living
the life in which God has placed me has in some instances been a
struggle. On otheroccasions, living has felt like an on going
achievement. But to make every moment worth while, God gave me a
perfect means of expression; poetry.
Five presidents (Eisenhower, Reagan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama) have
been elected to and served a second term. Seemingly free from
electoral pressure, each president has taken a unique approach to
their second term, and the book seeks to unpack the rationale
behind their decisions and actions in their final years of power.
The Internet and the World Wide Web are deeply affecting the way
things are traditionally done. E-commerce is changing businesses;
the stock market is accessible to individuals; digitized journals,
up-to-date databases, and newsgroups are changing the lives of
researchers. Is it reasonable to think that learning will remain
unaffected? Nevertheless, universities, with their blend of
teaching and research, have much to offer to those who wish to
learn more than simple skills: judgment, initiative, and fair
competition for research positions. Over the years, universities
have acquired invaluable resources in the form of laboratories and
libraries with specially trained staff. How can they evolve to take
advantage of the many possibilities of the Internet and broadband
communication? Many institutions of higher education are trying to
integrate new information and communications technologies into
current curricula or to develop new learning paradigms for
learning. Because it is still so early in the game they are eager
to compare their efforts and results to the achievements of others
and are willing to learn from them. The International Federation
for Information Processing (IFIP) is a multi national federation of
professional and technical organizations, founded in 1960 under the
auspices of UNESCO, whose mission is to assist in the development,
exploitation, and application of Information Technology for the
benefit of all peoples. Given this scope of activity, IFIP seemed
the appropriate body to give an international dimension to such a
forum."
Social work students consistently struggle to apply theory to
practice, or use the knowledge of textbooks and classrooms in the
field. Vignettes and scenarios represented in textbooks are often
simplistic, too tidy to be realistic, and with clean resolutions.
Next Steps: Decision Cases for Social Work Practice highlights the
complex, messy nature of social work practice in a way that is
engaging to students, allowing them to step into the role of a
practicing social worker. This book is a collection of decision
cases from multiple areas of social work practice, designed to
enhance the quality and depth of classroom case discussion and
analysis. These realistic, compelling cases present dilemmas about
which even experienced practitioners may disagree. This allows rich
classroom discussion that enhances critical thinking, provides
real-life application, and creates numerous opportunities to apply
content and knowledge acquired throughout a social work education
experience.
This intriguing and accessible book examines the experiments on
neutrino oscillations. It argues that this history gives us good
reason to believe in the existence of neutrinos, a particle that
interacts so weakly with matter that its interaction length is
measured in light years of lead. Yet, the scientific process has
provided evidence of the elusive neutrino. Written in a style
accessible to any reader with a college education in physics, Are
There Really Neutrinos? is of interest to students and researchers
alike. This second edition contains a new epilogue highlighting the
new developments in neutrino physics over the past 20 years.
Psychologists are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the
ecological validity of their assessment procedures--to show that
the recommendations concluding their evaluations are relevant to
urgent concerns in the legal and social policy arenas, such as
predicting dangerousness, awarding compensation, and choosing a
custodial parent. How much damage does a referred patient have? Who
or what "caused" the damage? What impact will it have on his or her
future life, work, and family? And what can be done to remediate
the damage? The purpose of this book is to provide sound objective
methods for answering these questions. It integrates the knowledge
of experienced practitioners who offer state-of-the-art summaries
of the best current approaches to evaluating difficult cases with
that of basic theorists who describe emerging methods in both
predictive and inferential statistics, such as Bayesian networks,
that have proven their value in other scientific fields. Arguably,
the enterprise of psychological assessment is so interdependent
with that of data analysis that attempts to make inferences without
consideration of statistical implications is malpractice.
Prediction in Forensic and Neuropsychology: Sound Statistical
Practices clarifies the process of hypothesis testing and helps to
push the clinical interpretation of psychological data into the
21st century. It constitutes a vital resource for all the
stakeholders in the assessment process--practitioners, researchers,
attorneys, and policymakers.

This book focuses on one important aspect of psychological research
-- the intensive study of people measured one or more at a time.
Some important historical material is detailed in several chapters
making a strong connection to previous material in psychology.
Several contributors present important details on classical and
novel methods to study behavior over time, and they do so in the
context of appropriate statistical methods. This appropriately
reflects the growing interest in examining dynamic behaviors by
objective measurement. Key experimental design principles are
expertly stated, reflecting the growing interest in studying the
individual course of development for invariants in behaviors,
including some unusual constructs such as cycles and punctuated
equilibria. This book also deals with practical contemporary
problems in psychology and documents the increased possibility of
using clinical research tools. Taken as a whole, this volume is
filled with interesting historical points, informative mathematical
and statistical analyses, and practical methods. It is the only
book addressing the issues of meta-analysis, cyclicity, and
confounds to visual inspection of single subject data that
considers ways in which statistical software can aid in overcoming
these constraints.

Placebo Effects Through the Lens of Translational Research is an
Open Access book integrating current knowledge on placebo research
in healthcare to develop comprehensive and adequate strategies for
better symptom management and treatment responses. This edited
collection features the work of experts in placebo studies,
including women, people of color, and international scholars,
helping to diversify the existing scholarship in the field. It
presents the latest research findings while also considers
theoretical aspects of placebo. Together, the chapters in this
volume help bridge the gulf between research and ideas in placebo
studies and their day-to-day application in clinical practice in
order to improve healthcare and health outcomes. Responses to
placebos can be as significant as the observed results of active
treatments in Phase II/III randomized clinical trials. These
results have led to a stagnant era in new drug development since
the effect of these potential therapeutics have similar, measured
effects as the placebos used in the same trials. This book sheds
light on translational aspects related to placebo and drug
treatment methods. It also evaluates the clinical implications of a
much-needed integration of pharmacological and nonpharmacological
treatments in healthcare. Placebo Effects Through the Lens of
Translational Research concludes with a discussion of the most
innovative developments in placebo research, which will be of
interest to a wide readership, including clinicians, senior
scientists, trainees, and patients. In a single volume, Placebo
Effects Through the Lens of Translational Research provides readers
with an overview of current perspectives on placebo research and
translational applications.
This monograph discusses the elements and dynamics of tactical
surprise on the mid- to high-intensity conventional battlefield.
Surprise has been a decisive principle of war throughout history.
Today, however, surprise is increasingly critical to success on the
battlefield. Surprise must be fully harnessed as an element of
combat power. We cannot deal in platitudes--the cost is too great.
The study first examines elements of creating and exploiting
surprise by presenting a theoretical basis for considering surprise
on the battlefield. Next, the evolution of methods to apply the
principle of surprise on the modern battlefield is looked at. This
section assesses the impact of major changes in conditions by
focusing on the battlefield from World War I to the present
emerging battlefield. As technology and capabilities increase the
complexity and lethality of the battlefield, methods to achieve and
exploit surprise also increase in complexity. Finally, a brief
consideration of existing doctrinal coverage of the principle of
surprise shows the lack of sophistication paid to surprise in
current doctrine. Recommendations for further efforts and
corrective actions are presented in the conclusion.
