The political dynamics that shape the Innocence Movement Since
1989, more than 3000 people are known to have been exonerated after
being wrongly convicted in the United States. Each one of these
cases represents a gross miscarriage of justice; they are stories
of lives upended by a criminal legal system gone awry. Yet, this
number just scratches the surface and does not capture the full
breadth of wrongful convictions, which may well number in the tens
of thousands. The Politics of Innocence explores the political
dynamics that have shaped the proliferation of innocence-related
policies across the United States and the ways in which wrongful
convictions affect public opinion about the criminal legal system.
Although some have suggested that this issue transcends ideological
divisions, the authors argue that public opinion and the policies
that address wrongful convictions are a product of the political
landscape. Using original data, the authors show how political
ideology influences awareness of the issue, affects support for
policy reform, and, in particular electoral contexts, influences
state policy adoption. The Politics of Innocence is a moving and
data-driven account of wrongful convictions.
`There is no 'one size fits all' professional development. Teaching
is exciting and rewarding, but it is like pro football in that on
any given day most anything may work, while on other days nothing
seems to work. But you still need to keep on playing your best.
Good mentors help keep good teachers playing at their very best. .
. . As the authors so aptly suggest, good teaching is more a
journey than a destination. This book will help both mentors and
teachers to navigate this journey successfully' - Stephen Sroka,
Health Education Consultant , Case Western Reserve University
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this book synthesizes
current educational research and extends its application to
in-service settings. Using a consistent and reader-friendly format,
the authors present specific mentoring strategies accompanied by
summaries of the research background validating the strategies,
mentoring applications for the strategies, precautions and pitfalls
helpful for implementation, and source citations for further
reference. Strategies are organized into convenient categories that
include developing teaching styles; time management strategies;
classroom management policies; managing curriculum, instruction,
and assessment; working with at-risk, special needs, and diverse
populations; working with educational technologies; interacting
with students, parents, and community; and more.
Reclaiming Spirit in the Black Faith Tradition provides an
interdisciplinary interpretation of the function of African
American Christianity. In this study, Derek Hicks emphasizes
everyday religious practices that engage culture in an effort to
reclaim the human spirit fractured by physical, political,
spiritual, and social degradation. Arguing for an intentional faith
that seeks to recalibrate wounded humanity, the concept of curative
recalibration sits at the heart of this active spirituality and
informs black biblical interpretation. Giving attention to black
faith as articulated during antebellum period America, Hicks
asserts that restorative sensibilities-expressed in moral politics,
protest documents, material culture, music, literature, and even
aesthetic presentation-disclose a 'reclaiming spirit' that
permeates all of black religious life and thought.
What does global justice look like, and how can leadership help get
us there? The contributors explore justice in various spheres:
citizenship, the marketplace, health, education, and the
environment. And they provide creative and constructive moral
approaches for evaluating and promoting global justice.

This volume considers the role comets may have played in the
origins and evolution of life. This is the only book dealing in
depth with this subject. It is particularly relevant in light of
recent investigations of Halley's comet, of new insights into
organic synthesis in meteorites and comets, and of new results of
numerical simulations of cometary orbits and impacts on Earth. The
book is intended as a comprehensive review of current research.

This work attempts to uncover the function of religion for those
degraded on the basis of race. Accordingly, Recalibrating Spirit
reveals the role of religion in critical reflection on and active
protest against negative assertions about racial identity in
general, and the abuse of black life in particular.
