The ACMT National Case Conference (NCC) is a monthly discussion of novel or interesting cases in medical toxicology. Participation is through online webinar, and the conferences are recorded to allow for review at any time. The cases in this book are taken from recordings of NCC with edits and revisions by contributors and editors to demonstrate educational points. The majority of the case information is from the original recording and represents actual patient presentations. However, some of the details have been changed and fictional information added to enhance the educational value. This volume covers a broad range of toxicological topics, and specialty guidance is offered at the end of every case to aid non-toxicologists. The dilemmas are applicable to both academic and clinical medicine. A list of relevant questions is also provided for each case. Subjects include common toxicological problems, rare presentations of common problems, common problems with controversial treatments or difficult diagnoses, and rare problems. Case Studies in Medical Toxicology from the American College of Medical Toxicology is a detailed reference text on specific toxicological issues and also serves as a practical review for those taking board exams. As a result, this volume is an important and necessary resource for medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as primary-care physicians, intensivists, and toxicologistsCase Studies in Medical Toxicology from the American College of Medical Toxicology is a detailed reference text on specific toxicological issues and also serves as a practical review for those taking board exams. The Capacity for Civic Engagement - Public and Private Worlds of the Self (Hardcover): D. Levine The Capacity for Civic Engagement - Public and Private Worlds of the Self (Hardcover)
D. Levine
R1,629 Discovery Miles 16 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do we form a connection to the ideals and institutions of public life? This connection is sometimes expressed in the language of civic engagement, public service, and commitment to the public good. While we do not lack for literature to guide us in thinking about public life, we have less to call on when our problem is not only to explore public ideals and institutions, but also to consider the nature and origin of our capacity to make a connection with and find meaning in those institutions and ideals. Levine explores the nature and origin of this capacity to form a connection and find meaning.

This book explores the common thread holding together seemingly diverse tendencies in attacks on liberalism. The author argues that ambivalence about the self and about desire as an expression of the self fosters the intense animosity we observe directed toward the liberal ideal. Ambivalence arises because the self is viewed as the locus of a destructive form of desire, one that must be controlled and repressed. The author argues that speaking of ambivalence toward the self is another way of speaking of ambivalence toward freedom, an ambivalence expressed in the impulse toward coercion that plays such a powerful role in the attack on liberalism.

Pathology of the Capitalist Spirit - An Essay on Greed, Loss, and Hope (Hardcover): D. Levine Pathology of the Capitalist Spirit - An Essay on Greed, Loss, and Hope (Hardcover)
D. Levine
R1,621 Discovery Miles 16 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pathology of the Capitalist Spirit is about capital and about the economic system that bears its name. In this book, Levine argues that our pursuit of ever-more wealth in the form of capital expresses our dissatisfaction with the world we live in, with what we have and what we don't have. Capital embodies our hope for something different. Because capital embodies this hope, it has become desire's object. In his study of capitalism, Levine explores the meaning of capital as a social reality connected to fundamental human aspirations. The link between capital and the pursuit of a hoped-for state is especially important in light of the stubborn insistence on the part of its critics that capitalism exists to serve the material interests of those whose vocation is to own capital. This misunderstanding ignores what is essential about capital, which is its link not to interests but to hope, especially the hope that by accumulating capital the individual can achieve an attachment to the good. It is this hope that blocks tolerance of any notion that there is something unfair in the capitalist's acquisition of wealth and that fairness can be achieved through its redistribution to others. It is also this hope that animates the capitalist system as a whole. And in that sense, this hope is the spirit of capitalism. To develop this theme, Levine calls on the ideas and writings of major theorists involved with understanding modernity and capitalism: Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, and Joseph Schumpeter.

Neurotransmitter Interactions and Cognitive Function (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Edward D. Levin Neurotransmitter Interactions and Cognitive Function (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Edward D. Levin
R5,334 R4,559 Discovery Miles 45 590 Save R775 (15%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cognitive function involves the participation of many different neurotransmitter systems in a variety of brain areas. The centerpiece of investigation regarding cognitive function has classically been the cholinergic system, but it has beome increasingly clear that other transmitter systems interact with cholinergic systems to provide the neural basis for cognitive function.

This book brings together cutting edge research to determine how the transmitter interactions form the mechanistic bases for attention, learning and memory. This research on transmitter interactions not only provides a more accurate, though complex, picture of how the brain works to provide cognitive function, it also provides important new levels of understanding about the mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction and novel avenues for therapeutic treatment. The researchers who contributed to this volume both reviewed the latest findings but also point to the directions of advancement of the field of neurotransmitter interactions and cognitive function.

Panic Child - A Harrowing True Story of Sexual Abuse and Neglect (Hardcover): Carol D. Levine Panic Child - A Harrowing True Story of Sexual Abuse and Neglect (Hardcover)
Carol D. Levine
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The traumas of childhood neglect and sexual abuse cannot be left behind when victims mature into adults. Too often, those adults repeat the crimes once perpetrated against them, depend on substances to dull the pain of memory, or choose partners similar to the adults who once abused them. Is there a way out of this darkness? Carol D. Levine, in her heartrending and yet hopeful memoir, Panic Child, reveals her childhood of parental neglect, sexual abuse, and the stranger who raped her, and her ascent from the depths of this terrible childhood to a life of service to children who suffered their own nightmares. The strong and steady voice of author Levine is the most powerful reminder that nobody is obliged to repeat the sins of those who harmed us, and that with support and a will to overcome trauma, we can heal from the deepest wounds and live loving, healthy, productive lives.

Essays in Honor of Christopher Hogwood - The Maestro's Direction (Hardcover): Thomas Donahue Essays in Honor of Christopher Hogwood - The Maestro's Direction (Hardcover)
Thomas Donahue; Contributions by Christopher Hogwood, Bernard Brauchli, Gregory Crowell, Bridget Cunningham, …
R2,026 Discovery Miles 20 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Essays in Honor of Christopher Hogwood: The Maestro's Direction, Thomas Donahue has collected several essays from authors who have been motivated and inspired by the distinguished keyboard player, music editor, writer, and conductor, Christopher Hogwood, in honor of his 70th birthday in 2011. As is clearly shown in the assembled articles, Hogwood has had considerable influence in the latter half of the 20th century in advocating the historically informed performance of early music. Contributions from such scholars as Yo Tomita, Richard Troeger, Sabine K. Klaus, Bridget Cunningham, and Annette Richards pay tribute to this major musician of the 20th century, one of the strongest advocates for the performance of early music. The volume begins with a foreword by Bernard Brauchli, followed by a chronology of Hogwood's education and career, including his publications and awards. The succeeding essays cover a variety of subjects associated with Hogwood's approach to early music, including the interpretation of composers' notations, discussions of musical instrument construction and use, elucidation of performance traditions and conventions of the past, and analysis of the music itself. The essays provide insights on the music of Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and J.S. and C.P.E. Bach and consider various keyboard instruments such as the clavichord, square piano, spinet, and claviorgan. An afterword by Hogwood himself completes this well rounded collection.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Smoking Cessation - A Practical Guidebook to the Most Effective Treatments (Hardcover, New):... Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Smoking Cessation - A Practical Guidebook to the Most Effective Treatments (Hardcover, New)
Kenneth A. Perkins, Cynthia A. Conklin, Michele D Levine
R4,002 Discovery Miles 40 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Practitioners helping smokers to quit can be more effective by learning key therapeutic techniques aimed at increasing any smoker's chances of success. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Smoking Cessation is a valuable guidebook to an empirically based CBT approach to smoking cessation that has been shown to be effective with or without the use of medications. This approach emphasizes techniques for enhancing the smoker's motivation and confidence to quit, and teaching the smoker steps for preparing to quit, coping with the difficulties that emerge after quitting, and transitioning to become a long term nonsmoker.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Smoking Cessation offers the fundamental counseling strategies and interventions that have been established, researched, and refined over the past decade. This program outlines essential components that should be included in the treatment of any smoker, as well as steps to take when faced with smokers likely to have particular difficulty quitting. Unique to this volume is the inclusion of a specifically tailored CBT model designed to address weight gain concerns in the smoker. Perkins, Conklin, and Levine are leading researchers on effective smoking cessation intervention for those concerned about the potential gain in weight that accompanies quitting, and offer a flexible approach that allows the practitioner to tailor interventions to each individual. An invaluable addition to any health professional's repertoire, the treatment model presented in this book provides practitioners with the tools necessary to help their clients to quit smoking.

Couple and Family Therapy of Addiction (Hardcover): Jerome D. Levin Couple and Family Therapy of Addiction (Hardcover)
Jerome D. Levin
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a comprehensive clinical resource for addiction counselors who want to learn about the psychological components of the problem, for individual therapists--dynamic, cognitive, and behavioral--who want to understand systems approaches in order to draw on a broader repertoire of useful interventions, and for couple and family therapists who want to learn more about the intrapsychic, biological, and pharmacological aspects of addiction. Dr. Jerome D. Levin takes the reader down the parallel paths of addiction treatment and individual and family therapy until they meet on the bridge of actual clinical practice. Practitioner, professor, prolific author, and respected authority in the field, Dr. Levin uses approaches to the treatment of alcoholism as a model for illustrating how theory, research, technique, and flying by the seat of the professional pants can integrate into a therapeutic style to help substance abusers and their partners and families.

The Coccidian Parasites of Rodents (Hardcover): Norman D. Levine The Coccidian Parasites of Rodents (Hardcover)
Norman D. Levine
R3,835 Discovery Miles 38 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important, long-needed revision of the authors' previous book discusses the 473 named species of coccidia of rodents. It. contains over twice as many as the 1965 book, The Coccidian Parasites (Protozoa, Sporozoa) of Rodents. Included is the available up-to-date information about each of these species. Data are given for the 99 forms which have insufficient information available to justify assigning them species names. This work can be used as a guide to future investigations, not only on rodent coccidia, but also on the coccidia of all other vertebrates and even some invertebrates. This book will serve as an invaluable and authoritative source for parasitologists. It is of importance to those involved in protozoology, tropical medicine, wildlife diseases and veterinary medicine.

Norman D. Levine
R4,434 Discovery Miles 44 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

About the turn of the century the Apicomplexa plus some other groups were called Sporozoa. With the advent of the electron microscope, it was realized that most "Sporozoa" have an apical complex; those which do not (the Microspora, Myxozoa, and Ascetospora) were removed and the name Apicomplexa was put forward by Dr. Levine in 1970. Most of the important Apicomplexa fall into five main groups: the gregarines, haemogregarines (about which there is relatively little known), coccidia, haemosporids, and piroplasms. These two volumes classify, list (with synonyms and hosts) and give references to descriptions of the approximately 4600 species of Apicomplexa that have been named so far. Volume I contains an 8-page introduction and covers the gregarines and coccidia (including the haemogregarines). In volume II are the Sarcocystidae (the predator-prey coccidia) the haemosporids (the malaria and related parasites), the piroplasms, and some parasites of uncertain affinities. The Apicomplexa are divided into over 300 genera and more than 60 families, but this division is deceiving. Most of these groups contain only one or a few species. There are fewer than 50 genera with 10 or more named species, and only 8 with 100 or more. These 8 genera (Eimeria, Haemogregarina, Gregarina, Isospora, Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, Sarcocystis, and Babesia) comprise more than half of the species.

Charles D. Levin, Allanah Furlong, Mary Kay O'Neil
R995 Discovery Miles 9 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The distinguished contributors to Confidentiality probe the ethical, legal, and clinical implications of a deceptively simple proposition: Psychoanalytic treatment requires a confidential relationship between analyst and analysand. But how, they ask, should we understand confidentiality in a psychoanalytically meaningful way? Is confidentiality a therapeutic requisite of psychoanalysis, an ethical precept independent of psychoanalytic principles, or simply a legal accommodation with the powers that be? In wrestling with these questions, the contributors to Confidentiality are responding to a professional, ethical, and political crisis in the field of mental health. Psychotherapy - especially long-term psychotherapy in its psychoanalytic variants - has been undermined by an erosion of personal privacy that has become part of our cultural zeitgeist. The heightened demand for public transparency has forced caregivers from all walks of professional life to submit to increasing bureaucratic regulation. For the contributors to this collection, the need for confidentiality is centrally involved in the relationship of the psychotherapeutic professions both to society and to the law. No less importantly, the requirement of confidentiality brings a clarifying perspective to debates within the psychotherapeutic literature about the relationship of theory to practice. It thereby provides a framework for shaping a set of ethical principles specifically adapted to the psychotherapeutic, and especially to the psychoanalytic, relationship. Linking general issues of privacy to the intimate details of psychotherapeutic encounter, Confidentiality will serve as a basic guide to a wide range of professionals, including lawyers, social scientists, philosophers, and, of course, psychotherapists. Therapy patients, policy makers, and the wider public will also find it instructive to know more about the special protected conditions under which one can better come to "know thyself."

This bibliography is a current source of information for researchers, practitioners, and planners interested in the older volunteer. The authors conducted an extensive search of material on the older volunteer, with emphasis on those works published between 1980 and 1991. After identifying approximately 700 sources, the authors selected nearly 400 for inclusion in this reference. The entries are grouped in seven topical chapters, and each entry includes a succinct annotation. Included are entries for books and articles on particular programs, characteristics of older volunteers, sources of statistical information, empirical research, and special population groups. Author and subject indexes conclude the work.

EasyScript (ES) is an easy speedwriting alternative and as opposed to any traditional systems ES does not require extensive memorization and a long learning time. It is alphabet-based and utilizes a small set of user-friendly rules which can be quickly mastered. The abbreviating rules can be customized to user's style and application. You can combine ES with any other method and apply it for words you don't have any abbreviations for. Imagine being able to write twice as fast as you do now. EasyScript is logical. It makes sense. In fact, all you need to remember are five basic rules. It's proven effective by people of almost all occupations from salespersons to managers and secretaries and students. Statistics complied from the current users since 1990 show that 9 out of 10 people found ES by a wide margin easier to learn and use than any existing methods. The customer base continues to grow consistently in the United States and many other regions of the world.

Would you drink milk from a cloned cow? When will we be able to clone humans? How would you react if a friend's child was a genetic clone of herself? Could the science of cloning provide the cure to Alzheimer's? Ever since the birth of Dolly, the infamous cloned sheep, such questions have rarely been long out of the public consciousness. In this enthralling introduction, biologist Aaron Levine provides a thorough exploration of the science and ethics of cloning. Covering its fascinating history, a detailed account of the key concepts involved, and the difficulties involved in drawing up progressive but ethically-responsible policy, Cloning: A Beginner's Guide is a invaluable way to learn more about this exciting and contentious topic.

This book explores a wide variety of theoretically central issues in the framework of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), a major theory of syntactic representation, particularly in the domain of natural language computation. HPSG is a strongly lexicon-driven theory, like several others on the scene, but unlike the others it also relies heavily on an explicit assignment of linguistic objects to membership in a hierarchically organised network of types, where constraints associated with any given type are inherited by all of its subtypes. This theoretical architecture allows HPSG considerable flexibility within the confines of a highly restrictive, mathematically explicit formalism, requiring no derivational machinery and invoking only a single level of syntactic representation. The separate chapters consider a variety of problematic phenomena in German, Japanese and English and suggest important extensions of, and revisions to, the picture of HPSG.
