This book gives a new foundation for the theory of links in 3-space modeled on the modern developmentby Jaco, Shalen, Johannson, Thurston et al. of the theory of 3-manifolds. The basic construction is a method of obtaining any link by "splicing" links of the simplest kinds, namely those whose exteriors are Seifert fibered or hyperbolic. This approach to link theory is particularly attractive since most invariants of links are additive under splicing. Specially distinguished from this viewpoint is the class of links, none of whose splice components is hyperbolic. It includes all links constructed by cabling and connected sums, in particular all links of singularities of complex plane curves. One of the main contributions of this monograph is the calculation of invariants of these classes of links, such as the Alexander polynomials, monodromy, and Seifert forms.

Die standige Verfeinerung der radiologischen Diagnostik erfordert eine vollendete Beherrschung ihrer Indikation und Technik. Dies gilt vor allem fUr die invasiven Methoden, wenn das Risiko dieser Verfahren in einem vertretbaren Verhaltnis zu ihrem Nutzen bleiben solI. Deshalb besteht auch das Bediirfnis nach einer didaktisch guten und umfassenden Anleitung fiir die Angiographie, ein invasives Rontgenverfahren, welches nach seinen groBartigen diagnostischen Erfolgen seine besondere Eignung auch fUr bestimmte therapeuti- sche Eingriffe nachgewiesen hat. Prof. Georgi hat schon wahrend seiner Tatigkeit in Mainz auf beiden Gebieten iiberzeugende und anerkannte Ergebnisse erreicht, die er in Mannheim mit Hilfe des von ihm aufgebauten Teams und in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den dortigen Klinikem fortfiihren und weiterentwickeln konnte. So ist unter seiner Fiihrung ein wichtiges Grundlagenwerk entstanden, das eine Liicke im deutschen Schrifttum schlieBen und die Arbeit der Radiologen weiter verbessem kann. Dies ist ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung auf eine Standardisierung der Weiterbildung zum Fach- arzt, an deren Ende auch in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland eine Uberpriifung der Kenntnisse und Fahigkeiten mit einem entspre- chenden Nachweis stehen soUte.
