Treating stroke requires attention not only to patients? physical
needs, but to their psychiatric needs as well. Unfortunately, there
has been a considerable lack of literature that tackles this
important facet of recovery. The Psychiatry of Stroke fills this
void through a comprehensive examination that explores the mental
and physical issues faced by stroke patients and offers up-to-date
treatment options.
Based on extensive clinical experience, the text offers practical
advice for improving the treatment of stroke by increasing the
attention paid to its mental aspects. Detailed and definitive, this
unique text demonstrates how mental impairment sets limits to
stroke treatment and rehabilitation and shows how to evaluate and
treat these impairments. Accessible to a wide range of readers,
this new edition presents detailed reviews of classical papers as
well as more basic outlines that provide a general overview.
Regardless of familiarity, readers will find comprehensive and
authoritative guidance for improving treatment.
Some of the topics covered include:
- background and causation
- risk factors and diagnosis of stroke
- localization of mental functions
- neuropsychopharmachology
- psychiatric syndromes
- apathy and failure to rehabilitate
- depression, anxiety, and dementia
- sex

The Psychiatry of Stroke also includes a wealth of informative
tables and diagrams as well as a full glossary of terms.
Extensively referenced, this important text also provides useful
appendices that look at resources for caregivers and the anatomy
and historical significance of stroke.
Physicians and mental health professionals who treat stroke
patients; staff of stroke units and rehabilitation hospitals and
centers; fellows in geriatric psychiatry, geriatrics, and stroke
programs; gerontology students and educators; and families of the
victims of stroke or vascular dementia will find this book an
invaluable day-to-day resource.
For as far into the future as we can see, governments will probably topple, power will continue to exchange hands, the climate will undergo continuous change, and the global economy will ebb and flow like the oceans. But for the world's many diverse countries-whether they be highly industrialized or third world-one thing will always remain constant: the need to solve the planet's pressing soil and water conservation problems, as well as implement effective policies. But why do some policy initiatives succeed while others fail? Soil and Water Conservation Policies and Programs: Successes and Failures addresses this very question. Based on an international conference held in Prague, this book debates the strengths and weaknesses of soil and water conservation initiatives implemented in North America, Europe, and Australia. Soil and water conservation policies in the United States, Canada, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, and other countries are examined through the eyes of technical and soil scientists. And the book also addresses specialized topics, such as agricultural pollution abatement in Poland, and private farmers and contemporary conservation subsidy programs in the Czech Republic. With its thorough treatment of the subject matter, Soil and Water Conservation Policies and Programs: Successes and Failures contributes to resolving one of the world's most pressing conservation issues.

In 1999, ten years of heated debate about the EU's role in defense
policy came to an end, when the EU decided to establish an
autonomous security and defense policy. Germany and Britain had
been key players in the years leading to this decision. But they
played markedly different roles -- the former endorsing the idea
from the beginning, the latter dragging its heels and only
reluctantly becoming a supporter. Nonetheless both British and
German policies can be understood as responses to impulses from the
international system. The end of the Cold War prompted both states
to pursue a policy of balancing US power. Yet international
institutions constrained their balancing efforts differently. To
demonstrate this, this study builds on the theories of neo-realism
and historical institutionalism and develops the approach of
structure-based foreign policy analysis: a new mode of analyzing
security policies as responses to the international environment.
Despite the numerous benefits derived from major technological and
medical innovations of the past century, we continue to live in a
world rife with significant social problems and challenges.
Children continue to be born into lives of poverty; others must
confront daily their parenta (TM)s mental illness or substance
abuse; still others live amid chronic family discord or child
abuse. For some of these children, lifea (TM)s difficulties become
overwhelming. Their enduring trauma can lead to a downward spiral,
until their behavioral and emotional problems become lifelong
barriers to success and wellbeing.
Almost no one today would deny that the world is sometimes an
inhospitable, even dangerous, place for our youth. Yet most
childrena "even those living in high-risk environmentsa "appear to
persevere. Some even flourish. And this begs the question: why, in
the face of such great odds, do these children become survivors
rather than casualties of their environments? For many decades,
scholars have pursued answers to the mysteries of resilience. Now,
having culled several decades of research findings, the editors of
this volume offer an in-depth, leading-edge description and
analysis of Resilience in Children, Families and Communities:
Linking Context to Practice and Policy.
The book is divided into three readily accessible sections that
both define the scope and limits of resilience as well as provide
hands-on programs that families, neighborhoods, and communities can
implement. In addition, several chapters provide real-life
intervention strategies and social policies that can be readily put
into practice. The goal: to enable children to develop more
effectiveproblem-solving skills, to help each child to improve his
or her self-image, and to define ways in which role models can
affect positive outcomes throughout each childa (TM)s lifetime.
For researchers, clinicians, and students, Resilience in
Children, Families and Communities: Linking Context to Practice and
Policy is an essential addition to their library. It provides
practical information to inform greater success in the effort to
encourage resilience in all children and to achieve positive youth
development.
The participation of the Iroquois of Akwasasne, Kanesetake
(Oka), Kahnawake and Oswegatchie in the Seven Years' War is a long
neglected topic. The consequences of this struggle still shape
Canadian history. The book looks at the social and economic impact
of the war on both men and women in Canadian Iroquois
communities. The Canadian Iroquois provides an enhanced appreciation
both of the role of Amerindians in the war itself and of their
difficult struggle to lead their lives within the unstable
geopolitical environment created by European invasion and
settlement.

The creation of the EU's autonomous security policy in 1999 ended
ten years of political conflict. In this book, the policies of
Britain and Germany are analyzed as those of 'constrained
balancing': balancing US post-Cold War supremacy with the
constraints of established security institutions.
