There were four different portraits of Paul in the early church:
the non-authoritarian Paul of the great Letters, the authoritarian,
misogynist Paul of the Pastoral Epistles, the frenetic missionary
who single-handedly introduced Christianity to the Mediterranean
world, and the proto- Gnostic Paul of Marcion and the Gnostic
commentaries on Paul s letters. Which is the real Paul? The
Christian church opted for the Pastoral Epistles, and so read Paul
letters through that lens. But that image has become so problematic
in the modern world that many contemporary readers are either put
off by Paul or simply ignore him. But was Paul really such a
frightful figure? In providing a fresh reading of Paul s authentic
letters, the SV translators have attempted to liberate his words
from those of Augustine, and later Martin Luther, who used Paul to
cover their own guilty consciences. This Augustinian-Lutheran
tradition of interpreting Paul s discourses about justification by
faith as a way of dealing with their own sense of moral failure,
for instance, represents but one way of translating Paul s letters.
The Greek of Paul s writings can be understood rather differently
so that Paul s message is not about personal guilt, but about the
trustworthiness of God, and Jesus courageous faith in God as a role
model for others. This is how Paul s letters are translated in this
book. Here readers will encounter a very different view of Paul and
his message.

Since the return of democracy to Latin America, policies intended
to promote the inclusion of women and other underrepresented groups
have been increasingly adopted throughout the region. Gender quotas
have been one of the most popular and effective mechanisms employed
in elections and other contexts in Latin America. This volume
begins with an introduction to gender quotas, including discussion
of the types and merits of gender quotas, alternative approaches to
the study of quotas, and their interactions with different kinds of
electoral systems. Successive chapters examine the adoption of
gender quotas and their impacts in the three largest South American
countries by area-Argentina, Brazil, and Peru-at both national and
subnational levels. These chapters also focus on specific topics
that stand out in the unique experiences of these countries:
substantive representation in the case of Argentina, gender and
campaign finance in the case of Brazil, and regional differences in
the impact of electoral rules in the case of Peru. Through careful
analysis, this volume presents a nuanced picture of how different
types of electoral systems may affect the election of women and the
effectiveness of quotas.
This book examines the United States Agency for International
Development's efforts to address concerns that have been raised in
the literature about the ability of international donors to support
Peruvian decentralization in developing countries. .

Must a folktale be connected to its culture? Can a tale with
universal applications be transmitted from one culture to another
without loss? Does a teller from one culture have the ability--or
even the right--to relate a tale from another culture? What happens
to a tale when it leaves the oral and adult arenas and appears in
print for children? Is it legitimate for a reteller to create
variants to suit a child audience? Children's literature is today
the major conduit for folklore, and professionals in the field must
consider these questions. Editors Gary Schmidt and Donald Hettinga
have brought together twenty-three writers of children's
literature, illustrators, storytellers, and literary critics, who
explore the issues and offer their experiences and views. The scope
of the volume is the North American folktale, a rich amalgam of
four major distinct traditions: the Native American folktale, the
African American folktale, the retold Western European folktale,
and the American tall tale. Each tradition is separately presented
with an introductory survey and a selection of essays by the
writers and critics. This focused collection will be valuable to
scholars and professions in folklore, anthropology, American
literature, and children's literature and useful also as a text in
courses on children's literature and folklore.

Beloved author Gary D. Schmidt expertly blends comedy and tragedy in the story of Doug Swieteck, an unhappy "teenage thug" first introduced in The Wednesday Wars, who finds consolation and a sense of possibility in friendship and art.
At once heartbreaking and hopeful, this absorbing novel centers on Doug, 14, who has an abusive father, a bully for a brother, a bad reputation, and shameful secrets to keep. Teachers and police and his relatives think he's worthless, and he believes them, holding others at arm's length. Newly arrived in town, he starts out on the same path—antagonizing other kids, mouthing off to teachers, contemptuous of everything intimidating or unfamiliar. Who would have thought that the public library would turn out to be a refuge and an inspiration, that a snooty librarian might be a friend, or that snarky redheaded Lil would like him—really like him?
With more than his share of pain, including the return of his oldest brother from the Vietnam War, shattered and angry, will Doug find anything better than "okay for now"?
In a story of perseverance and determination told with warmth and
sparkling with humour, a short winter day finds Samuel and Papa
walking a long road on Samuel's first trading trip. Meeting
strangers, practicing good manners, and proud to be in Papa's
company, Samuel watches and learns as Papa trades up from almost
nothing to the milk cow Mama is yearning for. Simple text combines
with vivid illustrations for a satisfying tale that will resonate
with readers who enjoy an adventure with dad.
It only takes a few hours for Turner Buckminster to start hating Phippsburg, Maine. No one in town will let him forget that he's a minister's son, even if he doesn't act like one. But then he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, a smart and sassy girl from a poor nearby island community founded by former slaves.
Despite his father's-and the town's-disapproval of their friendship, Turner spends time with Lizzie, and it opens up a whole new world to him, filled with the mystery and wonder of Maine's rocky coast.
The two soon discover that the town elders, along with Turner's father, want to force the people to leave Lizzie's island so that Phippsburg can start a lucrative tourist trade there. Turner gets caught up in a spiral of disasters that alter his life-but also lead him to new levels of acceptance and maturity.
This sensitively written historical novel, based on the true story of a community's destruction, highlights a unique friendship during a time of change.
In this Newbery Honor-winning novel, Gary D. Schmidt offers an
unforgettable antihero. THE WEDNESDAY WARS is a wonderfully witty
and compelling story about a teenage boy's mishaps and adventures
over the course of the 1967-68 school year.
Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who
must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while
the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn't
like Holling--he's sure of it. Why else would she make him read the
plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger
things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and
his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his
business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble
when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs;
angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same
night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights As fate
sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds Motivation--the Big
M--in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to
embrace his destiny, in spite of himself.
Industrial Violence and the Legal Origins of Child Labor challenges
existing understandings of child labor by tracing how law altered
the meanings of work for young people in the United States between
the Revolution and the Great Depression. Rather than locating these
shifts in statutory reform or economic development, it finds the
origin in litigations that occurred in the wake of industrial
accidents incurred by young workers. Drawing on archival case
records from the Appalachian South between the 1880s and the 1920s,
the book argues that young workers and their families envisioned an
industrial childhood that rested on negotiating safe workplaces, a
vision at odds with child labor reform. Local court battles over
industrial violence confronted working people with a legal language
of childhood incapacity and slowly moved them to accept the lexicon
of child labor. In this way, the law fashioned the broad social
relations of modern industrial childhood.
From its origins nearly two centuries ago, Hamiltonian dynamics has
grown to embrace the physics of nearly all systems that evolve
without dissipation, as well as a number of branches of
mathematics, some of which were literally created along the way.
This volume contains the proceedings of the International
Conference on Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems; its contents reflect
the wide scope and increasing influence of Hamiltonian methods,
with contributions from a whole spectrum of researchers in
mathematics and physics from more than half a dozen countries, as
well as several researchers in the history of science. With the
inclusion of several historical articles, this volume is not only a
slice of state-of-the-art methodology in Hamiltonian dynamics, but
also a slice of the bigger picture in which that methodology is
imbedded.

Soft tissue tumors are a very heterogeneous group of tumors in
terms of histogenesis, morphology, cytogenetics, molecular biology,
clinical manifestation, and prognosis. Their spectrum is
fascinating for morphologists and basic scientists alike. Yet
precisely this variability in the morphologic manifestation of soft
tissue tumors, specifically their histologic and cytologic
patterns, presents great difficulties to any effort to categorize
them. Although many soft tissue tumors are today defined not only
by histology but also by immunohistochemical, cytogenetic, and
molecular biological findings, the histogenesis of many soft tissue
tumors, in particular malignant ones, continues to be unknown. This
is associated with the fact that the actual precursor cells that
lead to these tumors have frequently not yet been identified. For
this reason, the customary classification of malignant soft tissue
tumors is primarily not histogenetic, but actually according to the
dominant phenotype, however characteristic it is. Of course, an
exact morphologic examination of soft tissue tumors con tinues to
be an essential prerequisite for making a diagnosis and determining
a therapy. The use of a wide range of additional modern examination
techniques, however, can make a substantial contribution toward
more precisely defining the biological behavior of a tumor, which
without doubt can have therapeutic implications.
This volume contains 21 research and survey papers on recent
developments in the field of diophantine approximation, which are
based on lectures given at a conference at the Erwin Schr
dinger-Institute (Vienna, 2003). The articles are either in the
spirit of more classical diophantine analysis or of a geometric or
combinatorial flavor. Several articles deal with estimates for the
number of solutions of diophantine equations as well as with
congruences and polynomials.
