In this unforgettable, gently humorous novel, New York Times
bestselling, award-winning author Gary D. Schmidt tells two
poignant, linked stories: that of a grieving girl
and a boy trying to escape his violent past. Meryl Lee
Kowalski is sent to a girls' boarding school in fall 1968 to move
on from her grief over a close friend's death. Matt Coffin is on
the run from a criminal gang, afraid that anyone he cares about is
at risk. When their paths cross, the pair’s connection begins to
shape each of their lives. As their loneliness is gradually
replaced by friendship, Meryl Lee finds unexpected allies and a
sense of purpose, while Matt finds a new family and hope for the
future. This riveting novel is Wednesday Wars author Gary D.
Schmidt at his best, weaving in powerful themes and raising tears
and laughter in equal measure. "Set in 1968, Just Like
That is part of an outstanding series that began with Newbery
Honor recipient The Wednesday Wars and continued
in Okay for Now, a finalist for the National Book Award.
While each book can be read separately, overlapping characters and
themes enrich each other in understated and often profound ways."

Longlisted for the Carnegie Medal. A heartbreaking story, narrated
by twelve-year-old Jack, whose family is caring for
fourteen-year-old Joseph. Joseph is misunderstood. He was
incarcerated for trying to kill a teacher. Or so the rumours say.
But Jack and his family see something others in town don't want to.
What's more, Joseph has a daughter he's never seen. The two boys go
on a journey through the bitter Maine winter to help Joseph find
his baby - no matter the cost.
Beloved author Gary D. Schmidt expertly blends comedy and tragedy in the story of Doug Swieteck, an unhappy "teenage thug" first introduced in The Wednesday Wars, who finds consolation and a sense of possibility in friendship and art.
At once heartbreaking and hopeful, this absorbing novel centers on Doug, 14, who has an abusive father, a bully for a brother, a bad reputation, and shameful secrets to keep. Teachers and police and his relatives think he's worthless, and he believes them, holding others at arm's length. Newly arrived in town, he starts out on the same path—antagonizing other kids, mouthing off to teachers, contemptuous of everything intimidating or unfamiliar. Who would have thought that the public library would turn out to be a refuge and an inspiration, that a snooty librarian might be a friend, or that snarky redheaded Lil would like him—really like him?
With more than his share of pain, including the return of his oldest brother from the Vietnam War, shattered and angry, will Doug find anything better than "okay for now"?

In a story of perseverance and determination told with warmth and
sparkling with humour, a short winter day finds Samuel and Papa
walking a long road on Samuel's first trading trip. Meeting
strangers, practicing good manners, and proud to be in Papa's
company, Samuel watches and learns as Papa trades up from almost
nothing to the milk cow Mama is yearning for. Simple text combines
with vivid illustrations for a satisfying tale that will resonate
with readers who enjoy an adventure with dad.
Physical Activity Epidemiology, Third Edition, provides a
discussion of current studies showing the influence of physical
activity on disease. Updated with extensive new content in
alignment with the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory
Committee Scientific Report, the third edition benefits from the
expertise of authors Rod Dishman, Gregory Heath, Michael Schmidt,
and I-Min Lee. These authors offer insight gained from their
professional experiences, which include leadership roles within the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, contributions to the
2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and a combined
1,000 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals across each of
their disciplines. Physical Activity Epidemiology, Third Edition,
explores how physical activity can enhance quality of life. The
text summarizes the available knowledge, examines the methods used
to obtain these findings, considers the implications for public
health, and outlines the important questions that remain. Readers
will find comprehensive discussions of these topics: Part I
introduces physical activity epidemiology and provides an extensive
background in research methods as well as physical activity
measurement and surveillance. Part II focuses on the evidence that
physical activity protects against premature death from all causes
and inhibits the development of coronary heart disease and stroke.
Part III offers population-based studies and clinical experiments
providing evidence that physical activity plays a role in the
prevention of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity. Part IV
compiles the latest data on two chronic diseases that are
increasing in prevalence worldwide: type 2 diabetes and
osteoporosis. Part V describes the evidence that physical activity
is associated with reduced risks of certain cancers and explores
the use of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. Part VI addresses
mental health and the promotion of a safe, physically active
lifestyle among all segments of the population. The third edition
of this text offers expanded coverage of the measurement of
sedentary behavior; the effects of physical activity on
osteoporosis and bone health, cancers, and inflammatory diseases;
and the potential of exercise to complement immunotherapy in cancer
treatment. More than 200 tables and figures highlight information
in an easy-to-understand visual format. Physical Activity
Epidemiology, Third Edition, examines the methodology and findings
of classic and contemporary studies and then helps students analyze
the results. The special Strength of the Evidence sections
summarize the findings to determine the extent to which correlation
and causation can be proven. Chapter objectives, chapter summaries,
sidebars, and a glossary assist students in finding key
information. Instructors will find a test package, image bank, and
downloadable learning activities to assist with student
comprehension. Physical Activity Epidemiology, Third Edition,
offers a comprehensive presentation of significant studies,
discusses how these studies contribute to understanding the
relationship between activity and disease prevention, and explores
how this information can be used in leading global society toward
increased health and longevity.

Soft tissue tumors are a very heterogeneous group of tumors in
terms of histogenesis, morphology, cytogenetics, molecular biology,
clinical manifestation, and prognosis. Their spectrum is
fascinating for morphologists and basic scientists alike. Yet
precisely this variability in the morphologic manifestation of soft
tissue tumors, specifically their histologic and cytologic
patterns, presents great difficulties to any effort to categorize
them. Although many soft tissue tumors are today defined not only
by histology but also by immunohistochemical, cytogenetic, and
molecular biological findings, the histogenesis of many soft tissue
tumors, in particular malignant ones, continues to be unknown. This
is associated with the fact that the actual precursor cells that
lead to these tumors have frequently not yet been identified. For
this reason, the customary classification of malignant soft tissue
tumors is primarily not histogenetic, but actually according to the
dominant phenotype, however characteristic it is. Of course, an
exact morphologic examination of soft tissue tumors con tinues to
be an essential prerequisite for making a diagnosis and determining
a therapy. The use of a wide range of additional modern examination
techniques, however, can make a substantial contribution toward
more precisely defining the biological behavior of a tumor, which
without doubt can have therapeutic implications.
From its origins nearly two centuries ago, Hamiltonian dynamics has
grown to embrace the physics of nearly all systems that evolve
without dissipation, as well as a number of branches of
mathematics, some of which were literally created along the way.
This volume contains the proceedings of the International
Conference on Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems; its contents reflect
the wide scope and increasing influence of Hamiltonian methods,
with contributions from a whole spectrum of researchers in
mathematics and physics from more than half a dozen countries, as
well as several researchers in the history of science. With the
inclusion of several historical articles, this volume is not only a
slice of state-of-the-art methodology in Hamiltonian dynamics, but
also a slice of the bigger picture in which that methodology is
imbedded.
This volume contains 21 research and survey papers on recent
developments in the field of diophantine approximation, which are
based on lectures given at a conference at the Erwin Schr
dinger-Institute (Vienna, 2003). The articles are either in the
spirit of more classical diophantine analysis or of a geometric or
combinatorial flavor. Several articles deal with estimates for the
number of solutions of diophantine equations as well as with
congruences and polynomials.
Gary D. Schmidt offers an unforgettable antihero in THE WEDNESDAY
WARS--a wonderfully witty and compelling novel about a teenage
boy's mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967-68 school
year.
Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who
must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while
the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn't
like Holling--he's sure of it. Why else would she make him read the
plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger
things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and
his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his
business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble
when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs;
angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same
night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights As fate
sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds Motivation--the Big
M--in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to
embrace his destiny, in spite of himself.
Twenty-five years ago, Hans Blihlmann published his famous
monograph Mathe matical Methods in Risk Theory in the series
Grundlehren der Mathematischen Wis8enschaften and thus established
nonlife actuarial mathematics as a recognized subject of
probability theory and statistics with a glance towards economics.
This book was my guide to the subject when I gave my first course
on nonlife actuarial mathematics in Summer 1988, but at the same
time I tried to incorporate into my lectures parts of the rapidly
growing literature in this area which to a large extent was
inspired by Blihlmann's book. The present book is entirely devoted
to a single topic of risk theory: Its subject is the development in
time of a fixed portfolio of risks. The book thus concentrates on
the claim number process and its relatives, the claim arrival
process, the aggregate claims process, the risk process, and the
reserve process. Particular emphasis is laid on characterizations
of various classes of claim number processes, which provide
alternative criteria for model selection, and on their relation to
the trinity of the binomial, Poisson, and negativebinomial
distributions. Special attention is also paid to the mixed Poisson
process, which is a useful model in many applications, to the
problems of thinning, decomposition, and superposition of risk
processe8, which are important with regard to reinsurance, and to
the role of martingales, which occur in a natural way in canonical
situations."
Cuba's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, also called
Cachita, is a potent symbol of Cuban national identity. Jalane D.
Schmidt shows how groups as diverse as Indians and African slaves,
Spanish colonial officials, Cuban independence soldiers, Catholic
authorities and laypeople, intellectuals, journalists and artists,
practitioners of spiritism and Santeria, activists, politicians,
and revolutionaries each have constructed and disputed the meanings
of the Virgin. Schmidt examines the occasions from 1936 to 2012
when the Virgin's beloved, original brown-skinned effigy was
removed from her national shrine in the majority black- and
mixed-race mountaintop village of El Cobre and brought into Cuba's
cities. There, devotees venerated and followed Cachita's image
through urban streets, amassing at large-scale public ceremonies in
her honor that promoted competing claims about Cuban religion,
race, and political ideology. Schmidt compares these religious
rituals to other contemporaneous Cuban street events, including
carnival, protests, and revolutionary rallies, where organizers
stage performances of contested definitions of Cubanness. Schmidt
provides a comprehensive treatment of Cuban religions, history, and
culture, interpreted through the prism of Cachita.

In this thoughtful novel Kimberly D. Schmidt brings to life the
history of Plains Indian women and the white invasion-an account
not solely of violence and bloodshed but also of healing and
forgiveness. Magpie's Blanket begins with the story of a young
Southern Cheyenne woman who survived the horrific Sand Creek
Massacre in 1864 only to witness a second attack on her people at
the Washita Massacre in 1868. Through the memories of three
generations of Cheyenne people, the novel recounts the events of
the massacres and the century-late reconciliation after the
townspeople's misguided attempt to re-create the "battle" of the
Washita with descendants of US soldiers.
