This collection examines the cultural and intellectual dimensions
of war and its resolution between Han Chinese and the various
ethnically dissimilar peoples surrounding them during the crucial
"middle period" of Chinese history.
Pheromones and other kinds of chemical communication underlie the
behavior of all animals. Building on the strengths of the first
edition, widely recognized as the leading text in the subject, this
is a comprehensive overview of how pheromones work. Extensively
revised and expanded to cover advances made over the last ten
years, the book offers a thorough exploration of the evolutionary
and behavioral contexts of chemical communication along with a
detailed introduction to the molecular and neural basis of signal
perception through olfaction. At a time of ever increasing
specialization, Wyatt offers a unique synthesis, integrating
examples across the animal kingdom. A final chapter critically
considers human pheromones and the importance of olfaction to human
biology. Its breadth of coverage and readability make the book an
unrivaled resource for students and researchers in a range of
fields from chemistry, genetics, genomics, molecular biology and
neuroscience to ecology, evolution and behavior.

How animals behave is crucial to their survival and reproduction.
The application of new molecular tools such as DNA fingerprinting
and genomics is causing a revolution in the study of animal
behaviour, while developments in computing and image analysis allow
us to investigate behaviour in ways never previously possible. By
combining these with the traditional methods of observation and
experiments, we are now learning more about animal behaviour than
ever before. In this Very Short Introduction Tristram D. Wyatt
discusses how animal behaviour has evolved, how behaviours develop
in each individual (considering the interplay of genes,
epigenetics, and experience), how we can understand animal
societies, and how we can explain collective behaviour such as
swirling flocks of starlings. Using lab and field studies from
across the whole animal kingdom, he looks at mammals, butterflies,
honeybees, fish, and birds, analysing what drives behaviour, and
exploring instinct, learning, and culture. Looking more widely at
behavioural ecology, he also considers some aspects of human
behaviour. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series
from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost
every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to
get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine
facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make
interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Chet Gloster is a hard-working, family man climbing the corporate
ladder. One day tragedy strikes his family as he loses his young
daughter to a sudden illness. At work months later, while Chet
still struggles with the loss, a new hardline executive emerges to
change the current culture. Chet is ordered to be management's new
hammer against the union. This new mandate will alienate Chet from
his co-workers, his friends, and most of all ... his wife. He
fights an ever-increasing dependence on alcohol to cope with the
mounting stress. Finally, Chet reaches his breaking point and
decides his only way out of this newfound hell is to eliminate the
source of his torment. Just as he is about to deal retribution to
those who have endlessly hounded him, he is brought face to face
with the one thing that may change his course and save his very
soul.
I started this book in 2009 about a man, who I had a crush on. The
book progressed from a simple crush to learning to get over an
addiction. Cover art done by Justin Gordon
Never Argue with an Autistic Child and other Special Tales was
written as a diary. When I started writing the book, my oldest was
11 and my youngest was 14 months. My oldest is Autistic and ADHD,
while my youngest has a global development disorder. My youngest
also has a potential heart condition. The book contains my thoughts
from 2012 about raising two special needs children.
Conversations combines my three short stories into a print edition
format. I wrote Conversing with Normality, Conversing with
Salvation, and Miscarried, as part of a contest on Lulu.com. The
contest had authors writing 600 word stories, in order to win a
Nook. I did not win the contest, but I enjoyed developing and
writing the stories. Conversations with Normality was about a
conversation I had with my oldest child, who is autistic. He was
hungry and I was struggling to figure out what to feed him, when we
had nothing to eat. Conversations with Salvation was about a
conversation I had with God about my child's salvation. Will Brad
truly understand God's grace and mercy? It is my responsibility to
make sure my son learns about God, despite his disabilities. I
found a church home, Fallbrook Church, shortly after, which has an
amazing special needs program. My child can learn more about God,
obtain salvation, and have eternal life. Miscarried was about the
pain I felt dealing with multiple miscarriages. The story became
600 words of therapy for me. Conversations with Sexuality discusses
my journey towards Celibacy. First Attempt is a mini-short story I
wrote for National Novel Writing Month. This is the beginning of my
story. Wrote based on things, which occurred between me and my
sons. Please enjoy Conversations
