Virtue theory, natural law, deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism: these are the basic moral theories taught in "Ethics," "History of Philosophy," and "Introduction to Philosophy" courses throughout the United States. When the American philosopher William James (1842 - 1910) find his way into these conversations, there is uncertainty about where his thinking fits. While utilitarianism has become the default position for teaching James's pragmatism and radical empiricism, this default position fails to address and explain James's multiple criticisms of John Stuart Mill's formulaic approach to questions concerning the moral life. Through close readings of James's writings, the chapters in William James, Moral Philosophy, and the Ethical Life catalogue the ways in which James wants to avoid the following: (a) the hierarchies of Christian natural law theory, (b) the moral calculus of Mill's utilitarianism, (c) the absolutism and principle-ism of Immanuel Kant's deontology, and (d) the staticity of the virtues found in Aristotle's moral theory. Elaborating upon and clarifying James's differences from these dominant moral theories is a crucial feature of this collection. This collection, is not, however, intended to be wholly negative - that is, only describing to readers what James's moral theory is not. It seeks to articulate the positive features of James's ethics and moral reasoning: what does it mean to an ethical life, and how should we theorize about morality?
Every accredited American hospital is required to have a process for handling ethical concerns within the institution. For the most part, hospitals satisfy this requirement by constituting an institutional healthcare ethics committee (HEC). However, many of these individuals, while well intentioned, have neither the training in ethics, nor the tools at their disposal to address properly the ethical considerations brought to them. Yet healthcare providers and patients turn to these committee members for ethical insight. Every one of us will die, and the processes we go through will be our own unique to our own experiences and life stories. It is reasonable to reflect on what kinds of dying processes may be better or worse for us as we move toward our end. Such consideration, however, can raise troubling ethical concerns for patients, families, and healthcare providers. Even after forty years of concerted focus on biomedical ethics, these moral concerns persist in the care of lethally impaired, terminally ill, and inured patients. End-of-Life Care and Pragmatic Decision Making provides a pragmatic philosophical framework based on a radically empirical attitude toward life and death. D. Micah Hester takes seriously the complexities of experiences and argues that when making end-of-life decisions healthcare providers ought to pay close attention to the narratives of patients and the communities they inhabit so that their dying processes embody their life stories. He discusses three types of end-of-life patient populations adults with decision-making capacity, adult without capacity, and children (with a strong focus on infants) to show the implications of pragmatic empiricism and the scope of decision making at the end of life for different types of patients.

Leading Harvard philosophy professor William Ernest Hocking (1873-1966), author of 17 books and in his day second only to John Dewey in the breadth of his thinking, is now largely forgotten, and his once-influential writings are out of print. This volume, which combines a rich selection of Hocking's work with incisive essays by distinguished scholars, seeks to recover Hocking's valuable contributions to philosophical thought.

The essays in this collection pay tribute to that love by addressing Dewey's philosophy of logic, from his work at the beginning of the twentieth century to the culmination of his logical thought in the 1938 volume, "Logic: The Theory of Inquiry." All the essays are original to this volume and are written by leading Dewey scholars. Ranging from discussions of propositional theory to logic's social and ethical implications, these essays clarify often misunderstood or misrepresented aspects of Dewey's work, while emphasizing the seminal role of logic to Dewey's philosophical endeavors. This collection breaks new ground in its relevance to contemporary philosophy of logic and epistemology and pays special attention to applications in ethics and moral philosophy.
