The most complete compilation of millimeter-wave theory and data
available, this book addresses those phenomenological
characteristics of radar clutter and propagation in the
millimeter-wave region that are of particular importance in the
design, test and permutation of millimeter-wave sensors. The text
provides in-depth information on both electromagnetic propagation
and clutter backscatter effects in the millimeter-wave region.
Nicholas C. Currie is also the editor of "Radar Reflectivity
Measurement: Techniques and Applications" and "Principles and
Applications of Millimeter-Wave Radar".
This title uses instructive diagrams and photographs to instill
confidence in critiquing sources of inspiration. In this inspiring
book, Derek Hayes investigates the process and practice of design
in woodturning. While aiming to instill confidence in appreciating,
criticising and selecting sources of inspiration, Derek questions
why we may find one turning attractive and another ugly. He looks
closely at design elements, sketching, proportion, pattern,
decoration and colour; with instructive diagrams and photographs
that will guide the reader to a better understanding of design.
Readers are encouraged to question and fine-tune this understanding
and experiment with ways of applying the approaches of other
designers to their own work. Each chapter starts with a
photographic example of what Derek sees as good design in a medium
other than woodturning.
IAU Symposium No. 80, The HR Diagram - The 100th Anniversary of
Henry Norris Russell was held on November 2-5, 1977 at the National
Academy of Sciences in Washington D. C. , in order to commemmorate
the birth of Henry Norris Russell on October 25, 1877 and to review
current problems in the use of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The
IAU has sponsored two previous conferences concerned mainly with
the HR diagram; The Position of Variable Stars in the
Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, a colloquium held at Bamberg in 1965
and The Hertzsprung Russell Diagram (IAU Symposium No. 10, J. L.
Greenstein, ed. ) held in Moscow in 1959. In 1974 a conference,
Multicolor Photometry and the Theoretical HR Diagram (Dudley Obs.
Report No. 9, A. G. D. Philip and D. S. Hayes, eds. ) was held in
Albany, N. Y. ; and in 1964 a conference, Basic Data Pertaining to
the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, was held at the Flagstaff Station
of the U. S. Naval Observatory in honor of Ejnar Hertzsprung and to
dedicate the 61-inch astrometric reflector. (Vistas in Astronomy
Vol. ~, A. Beer and K. Aa. Strand, eds. , Pergamon Press, Oxford).
Volume 12 of Vistas in Astronomy, The Henry Norris Russell Memorial
Volume (1970), contains a review paper on Changing Interpretations

The Islamic State in the Post-Modern World is a study of the
political development of Pakistan. This study consists of three
parts. The first addresses the concept of the 'state' as it has
evolved historically. The approach is comparative and involves a
brief review of Islamic political theory. The second part of this
section is the modern state, i.e., the Westphalian model. The
territorial state is still the standard although it has been
evolving in new directions for some time. The second section
focuses on the creation of Pakistan as an experiment in bridging
the gulf between the demands of the modern state and the
philosophical-spiritual attraction of the Islamic model. In
addition to constitutional issues, the discussion also includes
political forms, i.e., the machinery of daily government and the
appropriateness of democratic methods, elections, legislative
process, and political parties, to achieve Islamic ends. The third
part considers international issues from the beginning of the
twenty-first century especially the conflicts in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Despite its 'partnership' role with the US in the war
on terror, Pakistan has been consistently marginalized. Pakistan's
problems are exacerbated by the conflict over Kashmir, a vestigial
remnant of Pakistan's continuous, and largely unsuccessful, efforts
at self-identification.
Focusing on the problems associated with Pakistan's political
development, this book identifies and evaluates the factors that
have determined the effectiveness of the country's political
institutions. Professor Hayes examines the relationship of Islamic
values to political organization and public policy and discusses
the basic features of the coun
This innovative, interdisciplinary introduction to East Asian
politics uses a thematic approach to describe the political
development of China, Japan, and Koreas since the mid-nineteenth
century and analyze the social, cultural, political, and economic
features of each country. Unlike standard comparative politics
texts which often lack a unifying theme and employ Western
conventions of the 'state', "Political Systems of East Asia" avoids
these limitations and identifies a common thread running through
the histories of China, Korea, and Japan. This common thread is
Confucianism, which has shaped East Asian perspectives of the
universe and how it operates. The text describes and explains the
ways in which each country has employed this shared tradition, and
how it has affected the country's internal dynamics, responses to
the outside world, and its own political development.

In Japan and the Security of Asia Louis Hayes studies modern
Japan's frustrated search for national security. The book charts
Japan's attempts to fashion its own place in the sun in the face of
Great Power interventionism and national demands for regional
hegemony: first through nascent internationalism and later
disastrous totalitarianism that culminated in war in the Pacific.
Hayes expertly tracks Japan's shifting foreign-policy goals up to
the present day, moving from the preservation of the nation-state
by force to the drive for economic self-aggrandizement as a Cold
War client of the United States. The book reveals to the student of
modern Asian history a twenty-first century Japan that has rejected
unarmed neutrality and is reasserting its security independence in
post-Cold War Asia.

Introduction to Japanese Politics, now in its fully updated sixth
edition, is a comprehensive and current review of political and
public policy developments in Japan. Since the previous edition,
Japan's economic policy has undergone significant change with a
prolonged period of deflation having altered the dynamics of the
Japanese economy. At the same time, the Abe administration has
expanded Japan's international security participation, previously
limited by the constitution, while China's activities in the South
China Sea have impinged upon Japan's territorial claims. This
classic introduction to the Japanese political system has been
revised and fully updated in this sixth edition to take into
account these widespread changes in the country's political life.
Building on the structure and content of the previous edition, this
new edition covers: An overview of Japan's geographical setting and
history Japan's political institutions, processes, and actors
Recent organizational, ideological, and policy changes in the LDP
since its return to power The country's distinctive social order
and its educational, healthcare, and public safety systems The
increasingly contentious realm of foreign relations and security
issues, including China's expanding role and the effect of North
Korea's development of nuclear weapons. This broad-ranging textbook
continues to be essential reading for students of Japanese
politics, international politics and Japanese studies.
Cardiac Pacement has undergone a rapid development in technique and
application in the last years. Methods of cardiac pacement have
become more successful but also more complicated. This book is
written for internists in their practice and also for the
specialists in cardiology to improve their therapeutic measures
being informed about specific problems in cardiac pacement. Apart
from the basics of cardiac pacement also indications, selection of
pacers, implantation methods and complications are described. A
special focus is on postoperative monitoring of the patient. A vast
amount of illustrations is combined with very instructive text.
This book is for daily practice and desk reference for
practicioners and clinicians.

Streams are dynamic components of living landscapes. Stream
restoration, riparian restoration, and open land conservation are
very connected. In coming years, stream and riparian restoration
must be seen as an integral part of open land conservation in the
USA, and vice versa. This book considers three areas where
improvement is needed in stream restoration -- planning for stream
restoration when considering protecting riparian open land,
including monitoring and evaluation of stream restoration in the
objectives of a conservation plan, and formalising conservation
management plans that can use stream restoration to adjust the
trajectory of ecological change in protected streams and riparian
areas. Furthermore, it is well-known that humans have been
exploiting stream ecosystems for ages. The deterioration of the
functioning of river ecosystems has prompted rehabilitation and
restoration measures during the last 20 years, based on the
assessment of the ecological integrity. This book addresses several
restoration and rehabilitation programs that have been developed to
restore stream ecosystems. The critical role of small woody debris
in stream restoration is also examined, as well as the management
of floodplains on the functioning of river ecosystems and stream
restoration.
While the grandiosity of Fallingwater and elegance of Taliesin are
recognized universally, Frank Lloyd Wright's first foray into
affordable housing is frequently overlooked. Although Wright began
work on his American System-Built Homes (ASBH, 1911-17) with great
energy, the project fell apart following wartime shortages and
disputes between the architect and his developer. While continuing
to advocate for the design of affordable small homes, Wright never
spoke publicly of ASBH. As a result, the heritage of many
Wright-designed homes was forgotten. When Nicholas and Angela Hayes
became stewards of the unassuming Elizabeth Murphy House near
Milwaukee, they began to unearth evidence that ultimately revealed
a one-hundred-year-old fiasco fueled by competing ambitions and
conflicting visions of America. The couple's forensic pursuit of
the truth untangled the ways Wright's ASBH experiment led to the
architect's most productive, creative period. Frank Lloyd Wright's
Forgotten House includes a wealth of drawings and photographs, many
of which have never been previously published. Historians,
architecture buffs, and Wrightophiles alike will be fascinated by
this untold history that fills a crucial gap in the architect's
oeuvre.
