One way to shape technology and its embedding in society in the
21st century is through the visions that guide their development,
especially concerning the long-term societal perspective. A
critical discussion and assessment of these visions is a
prerequisite for influencing the course of development. Technology
assessment, therefore, has to provide a methodological repertoire
for assessing and constructing visions, taking into account the
requirements for long-term orientation as well as the need for
public legitimation. This volume draws upon insights from
technology assessment, political sciences, epistemology, sociology
and ethics. It is to contribute to the recent literature in on
"shaping technology," taking into account the "co-evolution of
technology and society." It connects to that technology assessment
literature that emphasises TA's pro-active role and its
contribution to political judgement.
Cancer of the bladder has a bad reputation: the combination of
urinary problems and malignancy gives just cause for continuing
concern. Not only is this common cancer a burden to the patient
but, because of the need for regular follow-up, it creates a large
workload on the urological services. It might be imagined that the
bladder would give early warning signals of disease, and indeed it
may do so; yet it can also be hesitant to reveal its severity. Thus
there are many problems that create challenges in the diagnosis and
management. Prevention is still the first goal of an oncologist,
with early detection of early disease being the next best option.
Early bladder cancer is amenable to several therapeutic approaches,
but we have still to determine the best approach. The management of
more advanced invasive bladder cancer all too often leads to
disappointment, and we remain uncertain as to the optimum
approach-surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or some combination of
these. Although none of these problems may be fully answered either
now or in the near future, many people are working towards their
solution, and the rate of progress needs to be documented from time
to time. This volume aims to set the standard for the present state
of our knowledge on bladder cancer. The editors, Professor Ernst
Zingg and Mr'. Michael Wallace, have gathered together the best
opinions on a wide range of topics relating to bladder cancer.
String Quartet no. 2 pushes the limits of polytonality and extended
harmonies. This three movement work would be comparable to the
Bartok quartets, although quite different. Tonality is pushed to
its limits through the use of 2 or more harmonies played
simultaneously. This is a highly rhythmic string quartet based off
the composer's percussion background. Duration: 14 minutes
The "Shopping Spree" has been around the drumming community for
decades. The name shopping spree most likely comes from the phrase
"shopping for more notes." It is essentially an exercise for
developing specific techniques and rudiments. This book is an
attempt to leave a mark in the historical records so musicologists
will know of the importance of this rudimental etude, and hopefully
cause a rebirth of this classic. Dr. Jackson composed 30 Original
shopping spree etudes for this work in addition to some bonus
compositions from previous books from Jackson
The second symphony from Greg Jackson for orchestra. This is
loosely a program symphony based on the book of Exodus. Standard
instrumentation in 3 movements, with a duration of 33 minutes.
A 3 movement work for timpani with piano accompaniment. The subject
of the piece is the Resurrection. This work requires 5 timpani.
A four mallet marimba work written for a 4.6 octave marimba. Part
of a collection of future releases.
String Quartet no. 1 has strong roots in neo-Romanticism, while
pushing the limits of polytonality and extended harmonies. This
four movement work displays the expressive quality and aggressive
side of the string instruments in the ensemble. The composition is
in f minor and uses a harmonic progression of i-vii-V-i, which also
extends to the tonal areas of the 4 movements. Although some
traditional harmonic elements are used, tonality is pushed to its
limits through the use of 2 or more harmonies played
simultaneously. This is a highly rhythmic string quartet based off
the composer's percussion background. Duration: 19 minutes
