This edited work is spurred by the 30-year anniversary of the groundbreaking work by Paul Ricoeur, Lectures on Ideology and Utopia (1986)-and the 40-year anniversary of the original lectures (1975). Ricoeur took these concepts that continue to be enormously important in social and political analysis and connected them in a uniquely intricate dance. The ensuing interplay of these concepts provides a framework for a more deft and subtle evaluation than is common. Little has been done to engage Ricoeur's skill in interpreting ideology and utopia or their creative tension, perhaps due to his significant contributions in other areas. When one combines Ricoeur's intricate analyses of ideology and utopia, however, with his contributions in other areas of philosophy such as hermeneutics, anthropology, embodiment, and philosophy of religion, one has fertile grounds for reflection in many directions. More precisely, it offers a sustained engagement with Ricoeur's political thought in a way that demonstrates both the significance of the political in his own thinking throughout his career, and how Ricoeur's understanding of the political offers something valuable to current discussions in political philosophy. A second goal is to begin to fill a gap in Ricoeur studies and situate his work on political ethics more fully in contemporary discussions about political thought. Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) has been heralded as one of the most notable philosophers of the twentieth century. Like a stone skipping across the philosophical pond, he would write a major work in one field, then move on to another. As a consequence, he is one of the most inter-disciplinary philosophers whose work not only brings together such areas as existentialism, phenomenology, hermeneutics, structuralism, psychoanalysis, metaphor, narrative, and political ethics, it bridges the gulf between Continental and Anglo-American philosophy. Despite the diversity one could identify continuing threads throughout all of his work that make him a major representative of hermeneutical philosophy, developing it much further in a critical direction. One of the areas to which he contributed greatly, almost in passing, was philosophy of religion, where he made notable contributions in the areas of symbol and metaphor as well as epistemology. Ricoeur's work has been appropriated in theology but often in an indirect way. This book helps one grasp the breadth of a complex philosopher but will also indicate its increasing relevance and appropriation in theology.

His polyphonic method is both his special literary technique and his distinctive way of probing theological, social, and philosophical depths. As Bakhtin and Terras suggest, all Dostoevsky's major literary inventions from the underground man to the vitriolic Grushenka are products of his ability to listen profoundly to his own characters. Like the genius author-redactor of 1 and 2 Samuel, he reports the heights and depths of human emotion and behavior, whether exploring the anatomy of dysfunctional families, making the heart soar with Zosima's vision of forgiveness, or giving Ivan Karamazov full rein to challenge theism. Dostoevsky's characters transform themselves into irregular verbs whose fierce independence emerges only because of their desperate and inescapable interdependence. His major characters are text, subtext, and context for each other. They play inside each other's head and answer in one way or another."
