Emotional Memory Failures - A Special Issue of Cognition and Emotion (Hardcover, New): Ineke Wessel, Daniel B. Wright Emotional Memory Failures - A Special Issue of Cognition and Emotion (Hardcover, New)
Ineke Wessel, Daniel B. Wright
R4,735 Discovery Miles 47 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The beginning of the 1990's saw a partisan debate about the nature of recovered memories for highly emotional events. Some authors claimed that recovered memories of trauma always referred to veridical memories that had been inaccessible for years. Others argued that such memories were false by definition and that they were created by therapeutic attempts to uncover trauma that was believed to lie at the root of anxiety or depression. Although the debate soon moved to a middle ground, both sides fuelled the development of relevant experimental paradigms to explore the mechanisms for how false memories might be created and also how true memories might be forgotten. Examples are studies looking at memory implanting, false word memory, and retrieval-induced forgetting in the mid-1990's. Many studies using such paradigms, however, relied on emotionally neutral material. Studies relating to trauma were less readily available. Now more and more researchers are bridging this gap, testing whether emotive material can be implanted and forgotten and whether there are special populations more susceptible to these effects. This special issue brings together papers examining emotion and memory malleability, both providing a picture of the state-of-the-art research and pushing the field forward.

Current Issues in Applied Memory Research (Paperback): Graham M. Davies, Daniel B. Wright Current Issues in Applied Memory Research (Paperback)
Graham M. Davies, Daniel B. Wright
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Research on applied memory is one of the most active, interesting and vibrant areas in experimental psychology today. This book provides descriptions of cutting-edge research and applies them to three key areas of contemporary investigation: education, the law and neuroscience. In the area of education, findings from the study of memory are described which could have a major impact on testing practice, revision techniques for examinations and teaching basic literacy and numeracy. In applications to the law, recent findings shed new light on the dynamics of child abuse investigations, the status of traumatic memories recovered after long delays and a further challenge for the eyewitness: change blindness. Finally, in neuroscience, contributions cover the frightening question of whether patients can remember incidents during surgical operations under anaesthetic, the unexpected impact of handedness and rapid eye movements on memory proficiency and the status of deja vu: mystical experience or memory error? These accounts of recent research on applied memory have been written by leading experts in the field from both Europe and America, with the non-specialist in mind. They will interest students who wish to extend their reading beyond core material in cognitive psychology, graduates on more specialised courses in education, forensics and neuropsychology, and all those who wish to enrich their knowledge of the contemporary frontiers of applied memory research.

First (and Second) Steps in Statistics (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Daniel B. Wright, Kamala London First (and Second) Steps in Statistics (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Daniel B. Wright, Kamala London
R1,331 R1,176 Discovery Miles 11 760 Save R155 (12%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

'This engagingly written and nicely opinionated book is a blend of friendly introduction and concisely applicable detail. No-one can recall every statistical formula, but if they have this book they will know where to look' - Professor Jon May, University of Plymouth 'This is one of the best books I have come across for teaching introductory statistics. The illustrative examples are engaging and often humorous and the explanations of 'difficult' concepts are written in a wonderfully clear and intuitive way' - Nick Allum, University of Essex Selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine, January 2010 First (and Second) Steps in Statistics, Second Edition provides a clear and concise introduction to the main statistical procedures used in the social and behavioural sciences and is perfect for the statistics student starting their journey. The rationale and procedure for analyzing data are presented through exciting examples with an emphasis on understanding rather than computation. It is ideally suited for introductory courses in statistics given its gentle beginning, yet progressive treatment of topics. In addition to descriptive statistics, graphs, t-tests, oneway ANOVAs, Chi-square, and simple linear regression, this Second Edition now includes some new, more advanced topic areas as well as a host of additional examples to help students confidently progress through their studies and apply the techniques in lab work, reports and research projects. Key features of this new edition: - the reoganization of the first three chapters giving more attention to univariate statistics and providing more examples to work through at this level - more advanced 'second step' content has been added on factorial ANOVA and multiple regression - the robust methods chapter from the first edition is now spread throughout the book, and is linked with common teaching practices. - many more examples have been added to enhance the book's practical potential. - a host of exercises as well as further reading sections at the end of every chapter. An accompanying Web page includes information for each chapter using the statistical packages SPSS and R.

Modern Regression Techniques Using R - A Practical Guide (Paperback, New): Daniel B. Wright, Kamala London Modern Regression Techniques Using R - A Practical Guide (Paperback, New)
Daniel B. Wright, Kamala London
R2,187 Discovery Miles 21 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Statistics is the language of modern empirical social and behavioural science and the varieties of regression form the basis of this language. Statistical and computing advances have led to new and exciting regressions that have become the necessary tools for any researcher in these fields. In a way that is refreshingly engaging and readable, Wright and London describe the most useful of these techniques and provide step-by-step instructions, using the freeware R, to analyze datasets that can be located on the books' webpage: www.sagepub.co.uk/wrightandlondon. Techniques covered in this book include multilevel modeling, ANOVA and ANCOVA, path analysis, mediation and moderation, logistic regression (generalized linear models), generalized additive models, and robust methods. These are all tested out using a range of real research examples conducted by the authors in every chapter. Given the wide coverage of techniques, this book will be essential reading for any advanced undergraduate and graduate student (particularly in psychology) and for more experienced researchers wanting to learn how to apply some of the more recent statistical techniques to their datasets. The Authors are donating all royalties from the book to the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Disorders.

Understanding Statistics - An Introduction for the Social Sciences (Hardcover): Daniel B. Wright Understanding Statistics - An Introduction for the Social Sciences (Hardcover)
Daniel B. Wright
R7,166 Discovery Miles 71 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this comprehensive introduction to using statistics in the social sciences, Daniel B Wright describes the most popular statistical techniques, explaining their basic principles and demonstrating their use in a wide range of social research. The book is divided into four sections. Part One explains the theoretical relationship between statistics and research, outlining the place of statistics in the research process and introducing hypothesis testing. In Part Two the two t-tests are described in detail. This serves as a foundation for the rest of the book and develops skills that are called upon in later chapters. Part Three outlines the three main families of statistical tests - regression, analysis of variance, and two-variable tests. Finally, Part Four offers a guide to more advanced techniques.
