Reframing Disability? - Media, (Dis)Empowerment, and Voice in the 2012 Paralympics (Paperback): Daniel Jackson, Caroline E. M.... Reframing Disability? - Media, (Dis)Empowerment, and Voice in the 2012 Paralympics (Paperback)
Daniel Jackson, Caroline E. M. Hodges, Mike Molesworth, Richard Scullion
R1,522 Discovery Miles 15 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The London 2012 Paralympic Games - the biggest, most accessible and best-attended games in the Paralympics' 64-year history - came with an explicit aim to "transform the perception of disabled people in society," and use sport to contribute to "a better world for all people with a disability." This social agenda offered the potential to re-frame disability; to symbolically challenge "ableist" ideology and to offer a reinvention of the (dis)abled body and a redefinition of the possible. This edited collection investigates what has and is happening in relation to these ambitions. The book is structured around three key questions: 1. What were the predominant mediated narratives surrounding the Paralympics, and what are the associated meanings attached to them? 2. How were the Paralympics experienced by media audiences (both disabled and non-disabled)? 3. To what extent did the 2012 Paralympics inspire social change? Each section of this book is interspersed with authentic "voices" from outside academia: broadcasters, athletes and disabled schoolchildren.

Popular Opposition to Irish Home Rule in Edwardian Britain (Hardcover): Daniel Jackson Popular Opposition to Irish Home Rule in Edwardian Britain (Hardcover)

This book is a salutary reminder that the realities of British politics before 1914 were more complex and rather different from the 'whiggish' stereotypes about New Liberalism, and the rise of Labour and class politics which have dominated our understanding of late Edwardian Britain. Jackson's groundbreaking research shows that from the start of the Third Home Rule Bill crisis, there was in Britain considerable popular interest in the Irish issue, and that the Curragh army mutiny of 1914 was not an isolated incident, but part of a wider popular movement. A well-orchestrated campaign of agitation led by Unionist leaders Sir Edward Carson and Andrew Bonar Law had so exploited patriotic and sectarian resentment at the prospect of Irish Home Rule that by 1914 the United Kingdom was on the verge of civil war. Jackson locates this movement at the end of a 'long nineteenth century', where communal and confessional identities were still as powerful as class, and where native hostility to Catholicism and Irish migration still prevailed. This work shows that the rhetoric and street-theatre of Carsonism had as much resonance in Britain as 'Protestant Ulster', where enormous crowds turned out to protest against Home Rule throughout Great Britain (and not just in the sectarian cauldrons of Liverpool and Glasgow). For Jackson, the study of these massive demonstrations becomes a way of capturing the opinions of those rendered voiceless by history, and shows how the Ulster question allowed Conservative politicians to bridge the gap between elites and masses, and elicit a degree of popular enthusiasm unmatched in the years before the Great War.

The Media, Political Participation and Empowerment (Paperback): Richard Scullion, Roman Gerodimos, Daniel Jackson, Darren... The Media, Political Participation and Empowerment (Paperback)
Richard Scullion, Roman Gerodimos, Daniel Jackson, Darren Lilleker
R1,578 Discovery Miles 15 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technological, cultural and economic forces are transforming political communication, posing challenges and opportunities for politicians and media organisations, while at the same time many governments and civil society express concerns about the extent and nature of political empowerment and civic engagement. This book offers an international perspective on current thinking and practice about civic and audience empowerment, focusing on the ways and means through which media can empower or dis-empower citizens as audiences. It features theoretical and empirical chapters that draw specific attention to a reappraisal of the theories, methods and issues that inform our understanding of citizens and audiences in contemporary politics. The authors address the following questions: How much and what sorts of civic and audience empowerment are most desirable, and how does this differ cross-nationally? How do citizens relate to private and public spaces? How do citizens function in online, networked, liminal and alternative spaces? How do audiences of 'non-political' media spaces relate their experiences to politics? How are political parties and movements utilising audiences as co-creators of political communication and what are the consequences for democracy? With examples from the UK, USA, Holland, France, Germany, The Middle East, South Africa and Mexico, this innovative volume will be of interest to students and scholars of political science, marketing, journalism, cultural studies, public relations, media and international relations.

The men of the 449th Fighter Squadron called themselves the forgotten squadron. Despite serving to great effect as the only P-38 fighter squadron with the Flying Tigers in China, the 449th received little press or praise during or after the war. Ironically, the unit participated in the 14th Air Force's greatest missions, including the daring Thanksgiving Day raid on Taiwan, accidentally shooting down one of the top-ranking Japanese generals in China, and even supporting Ho Chi Minh against the Japanese in Indochina. Having spread its wings from Taiwan to the Salween Front, the 449th is the perfect case study to investigate Major General Claire Lee Chennault's air war over China in World War II.

The untold story of Chinese and Americans standing side-by-side, fighting together and dying together on the highest, most rugged battlegrounds of WWII. In May 1942, the Japanese 15th Army conquered Burma and southwest China. Only a desperate defense by disorganized and defeated Chinese troops and the war-weary remains of Claire Chennault's mercenary Flying Tigers stopped the advance at the Salween River. For two years, the people of southwest China lived under an oppressive Japanese occupation while Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, President Franklin Roosevelt, General Joseph Stilwell, and Major General Claire Chennault bickered over what to do next. Finally, in May 1944, the Chinese Expeditionary Force, with American supplies and advisors, supported from above by the legendary 14th Air Force, crossed the Salween to take back what they had lost.

The Essence of Software - Why Concepts Matter for Great Design (Hardcover): Daniel Jackson The Essence of Software - Why Concepts Matter for Great Design (Hardcover)
Daniel Jackson
R667 Discovery Miles 6 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A revolutionary concept-based approach to thinking about, designing, and interacting with software As our dependence on technology increases, the design of software matters more than ever before. Why then is so much software flawed? Why hasn't there been a systematic and scalable way to create software that is easy to use, robust, and secure? Examining these issues in depth, The Essence of Software introduces a theory of software design that gives new answers to old questions. Daniel Jackson explains that a software system should be viewed as a collection of interacting concepts, breaking the functionality into manageable parts and providing a new framework for thinking about design. Through this radical and original perspective, Jackson lays out a practical and coherent path, accessible to anyone-from strategist and marketer to UX designer, architect, or programmer-for making software that is empowering, dependable, and a delight to use. Jackson explores every aspect of concepts-what they are and aren't, how to identify them, how to define them, and more-and offers prescriptive principles and practical tips that can be applied cost-effectively in a wide range of domains. He applies these ideas to contemporary software designs, drawing examples from leading software manufacturers such as Adobe, Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter, and others. Jackson shows how concepts let designers preserve and reuse design knowledge, rather than starting from scratch in every project. An argument against the status quo and a guide to improvement for both working designers and novices to the field, The Essence of Software brings a fresh approach to software and its creation.

Healthcare Economics Made Easy, third edition (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Daniel Jackson Healthcare Economics Made Easy, third edition (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Daniel Jackson
R716 Discovery Miles 7 160 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Healthcare Economics Made Easy, third edition is a clear and concise text written for those working in healthcare who need to understand the basics of the subject but who do not want to wade through a specialist health economics text. It will equip the reader with the necessary skills to make valid decisions based on the economic data and with the background knowledge to understand the health economics literature. This new edition builds on the success of the second edition by updating the material on the NICE appraisal process and including new sections on health technology assessment in the USA and the key role of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review. This book provides insight into the economic methods that are used to promote public health policies, the techniques used for grading and valuing evidence and the statistics relied upon, without trying to re-train the reader as a health economist. If you are left bemused by terms such as QALY, health utility analysis and cost-minimization analysis, then this is the book for you! Second edition Highly Commended in the BMA Medical Book Awards! Here's what the judges said: "This is one of the few textbooks I would suggest every clinician reads."

This book offers a theoretically driven, empirically grounded survey of the role visual communication plays in political culture, enabling a better understanding of the significance and impact visuals can have as tools of political communication. The advent of new media technologies have created new ways of producing, disseminating and consuming visual communication, the book hence explores the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of visual political communication in the digital age, and how visual communication is employed in a number of key settings. The book is intended as a specialist reading and teaching resource for courses on media, politics, citizenship, activism, social movements, public policy, and communication.
