Proxy warfare will shape the conflicts of the twenty-first century
for the foreseeable future. Yet the popular understanding of proxy
wars remains largely shaped by the experience of the Cold War. In
reality, in the Greater Middle East and its periphery today, the
growing power of regional states and non-state actors, combined
with the proliferation of new technology, has reshaped proxy
conflicts, in an increasingly multipolar and interconnected
environment. In this collected volume, a range of researchers
examine what constitutes proxy warfare and provide new insight into
how these wars are waged, in contexts stretching from Ukraine to
North Africa and Syria to Afghanistan. The volume draws upon
research, surveys and interviews conducted in Syria, Iraq, Libya
and Ukraine, as well as examining the propaganda output of those
involved in these countries' wars. In doing so, 'Understanding the
New Proxy Wars' helps reveal both the continuities and the
differences between recent conflicts and those of times past.
Drones are the iconic military technology of many of today's most
pressing conflicts. Drones have captured the public imagination,
partly because they project lethal force in a manner that
challenges accepted norms and moral understandings. Drone Wars
presents a series of essays by legal scholars, journalists,
government officials, military analysts, social scientists, and
foreign policy experts. It addresses drones' impact on the ground,
how their use adheres to and challenges the laws of war, their
relationship to complex policy challenges, and the ways they help
us understand the future of war. The book is a diverse and
comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective on drones that covers
important debates on targeted killing and civilian casualties,
presents key data on drone deployment, and offers new ideas on
their historical development, significance, and impact on law and
policy.
With These Hands documents the farm labor system through the
presentation of a collection of voices--workers who labor in the
fields, growers who manage the multi-billion dollar agricultural
industry, contractors who link workers with growers, coyotes who
smuggle people across the border, union organizers, lobbyists,
physicians, workers' families in Mexico, farmworker children and
others. The diversity of stories presents the world of migrant
farmworkers as a complex social and economic system, a network of
intertwined lives, showing how all Americans are bound to the
struggles and contributions of our nation's farm laborers.
