From phishing scams to Ponzi schemes, fraudulent science to fake art, chess cheaters to crypto hucksters, and marketers to magicians, our world brims with deception. In Nobody's Fool, psychologists Daniel Simons and Christopher Chabris show us how to avoid being taken in. They describe the key habits of thinking and reasoning that serve us well most of the time but make us vulnerable-like our tendency to accept what we see, stick to our commitments, and overvalue precision and consistency. Each chapter illustrates their new take on the science of deception, describing scams you've never heard of and shedding new light on some you have. Simons and Chabris provide memorable maxims and practical tools you can use to spot deception before it's too late. Informative, illuminating, and entertaining, Nobody's Fool will protect us from charlatans in all their forms-and delight us along the way.?
The inside story-from the organizer himself--of the largest unrecovered cash haul in history. This full account brings readers behind the heist memorialized in Goodfellas, a crime that has baffled law enforcement for decades. From Henry Hill himself, The Lufthansa Heist is the last book he worked on before his 2012 death. On December 11, 1978, a daring armed robbery rocked Kennedy Airport, resulting in the largest unrecovered cash haul in world history, totaling six million dollars. The perpetrators were never apprehended and thirteen people connected to the crime were murdered in homicides that, like the crime itself, remain unsolved to this day. The burglary has fascinated the public for years, dominating headlines around the globe due to the story's unending ravel of mysteries that baffled the authorities. One of the organizers of the sensational burglary, Henry Hill, who passed away in 2012, in collaboration with Daniel Simone, has penned an unprecedented "tell-all" about the robbery with never-before-unveiled details, particulars only known to an insider. In 2013, this infamous criminal act again flared up in the national news when five reputed gangsters were charged in connection to the robbery. This latest twist lends the project an extraordinary sense of timing, and the legal proceedings of the newly arrested suspects will unfold over the next year, continuing to keep the Lufthansa topic in the news.
Atherothrombotic disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality; therefore, anti-thrombotic agents play a pivotal role in primary and secondary prevention of atherothrombotic complications. In "A Clinical Guide to the Use of Antithrombotic Drugs," three main sections in the field have been elaborated. In the first, 3 chapters on basics concepts of atherothrombosis are examined. The objectives of these chapters are to provide pathophysiological concepts on atherothrombosis useful to the practicing clinician to understand the rationale for using antithrombotic agents in daily practice. In the second section, 16 chapters describe 4 main categories of antithombotic agents used in clinical practice: oral antiplatelet agents, intravenous antiplatelet agents, thrombin inhibitors, and fibrinolytics. In each category, description and clinical application of currently approved agents as well as agents under clinical investigation are described. The objectives of this section are to provide the stateof the art knowledge on antithrombotic drug use and development. In the third section, a series of 8 chapters examines the application of antithrombotic agents in specific clinical scenarios. The objective of this section is to provide practical insights on how to apply antithrombotic agents in the context of daily clinical scenarios. Overall, this compendium provides a valuable tool for clinicians in their daily clinical practice on how to use currently available antithrombotic agents as well as provide insights on the future development in this field.

If a gorilla walked out into the middle of a basketball pitch, you'd notice it. Wouldn't you? If a serious violent crime took place just next to you, you'd remember it, right? The Invisible Gorilla is a fascinating look at the unbelievable, yet routine tricks that your brain plays on you. In an award-winning and groundbreaking study, psychologists Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons asked volunteers to watch a 60-second film of a group of students playing basketball and told them to count the number of passes made. About halfway through, a woman dressed head to toe in a gorilla outfit slowly moved to centre screen, beat her chest at the camera, and casually strolled away. Unbelievably, almost half of the volunteers missed the gorilla. As this astonishing and utterly unique new book demonstrates, exactly the same kind of mental illusion that causes people to miss the gorilla can also explain why many other things, including why: honest eyewitness testimony can convict innocent defendants expert money managers suddenly lose billions Homer Simpson has much to teach you about clear thinking Insightful, witty, and fascinating, The Invisible Gorilla closely examines the false impressions that most profoundly influence our lives and gives practical advice on how we can minimize their negative impact.

New York City, 1972. Bobby Comfort and Sammy "the Arab" Nalo were highly skilled jewel thieves who specialized in robbing luxury Manhattan hotels. (They once robbed Sophia Loren's suite, relieving the Italian actress of over $1 million in gems.) With the blessing of the Lucchese crime family, their next plot targeted the posh Pierre Hotel-host to kings and queens, presidents and aldermen, and the wealthiest of the wealthy. Attired in tuxedoes and driven in a limousine, this band of thieves arrived at the Pierre and with perfect timing, they seized the security guards and, in systematically choreographed moves, they swiftly took the night staff-and several unfortunate guests who happened to be roaming around the lobby-as hostages. The deposit boxes inside the vault chamber are plundered and, after the intruders have held the Pierre under siege for almost two hours, the gentlemanly thieves depart in their limousine with a haul of $28 million. But then matters begin to deteriorate. Comfort, Nalo, and their partners begin to double and triple cross one another-two absconding to Europe with the bulk of the booty while three are murdered by their former associates. The authorities immediately suspect Comfort and Nalo of masterminding the Pierre ambush and arrest them, but these veteran criminals keep their mouths shut. To ensure that they are not prosecuted, the Lucchese Family funnels a $500,000 bribe to the presiding judge to quash the charges-and to this day The Pierre Hotel caper remains unsolved. A suspenseful narrative of Mafia intrigue, police corruption, and personal betrayal-which concludes with a poignant love affair-this is the true story of the most famous hotel robbery in American history.

"The centrifugal pull of great literature, as embodied by the work of these twenty-five writers, draws us into a fuller realization of our humanity." - Daniel Simon, editor-in-chief of World Literature Today For the last fifty years, The Neustadt Prize has been one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the world, second only to the Nobel. Poets, novelists, and playwrights from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Czeslaw Milosz and Dubravka Ugresic are listed among the ranks of laureate. Now, in honor of the fiftieth anniversary, Dispatches from the Republic of Letters gathers the acceptance speeches of these twenty-five pioneering writers into one volume, edited and with an introduction by World Literature Today editor-in-chief Daniel Simon.
This book presents, in large-format images, Simon's unique
virtually designed racing machines and tells the story of
international racer Vic Cooper, who time-travels under the name
'Vic13' and later 'Mean13' to the past and the future to compete in
a wide variety of motor races. His attempts are supported by world
famous constructor Masucci, who built amazing vehicles for Cooper
between the years 1916 and 2582. In this first volume of The
Timeless Racer, Cooper time-travels to the year 2027, where he
competes in the world-famous--and legendarily dangerous-- 48 Hours
of America endurance race. The book puts three vehicles in the
spotlight, shown in incredibly photo-realistic images.
Reading this book will make you "less" sure of yourself--and that's
a good thing. In "The Invisible Gorilla, " Christopher Chabris and
Daniel Simons, creators of one of psychology's most famous
experiments, use remarkable stories and counterintuitive scientific
findings to demonstrate an important truth: "Our minds don't work
the way we think they do." We think we see ourselves and the world
as they really are, but we're actually missing a whole lot. "From the Hardcover edition."
