Weiterhin wird gezeigt und erklart wie sich die Ertrage von je 5 grossen US und EU Banken wahrend der Finanzkrise entwickelt haben. Die Investitionsstruktur anderte sich weg von der Kreditvergabe hin zu mehr Investitionen in Wertpapieren. Es zeigte sich, dass die Veranderung bei den EU Bank starker ist, als bei den US Banken. Auch die Finanzierungsstruktur hat sich geandert. Der Anteil der Einlagen ging zuruck. Der Anteil der sonstigen Verbindlichkeiten legte zu. Dieser Trend dreht sich seit 2008 wieder zu mehr Einlagen. Bei der Analyse der Ertrage wahrend der Finanzkrise zeigt sich, dass die Top 5 US und Top 5 EU Banken auch wahrend der Krise grosstenteils Gewinne erzielt habe

Im Zuge der Einfuhrung von Basel II im Jahr 2006 wurde es fur mittelstandische Unternehmen zunehmend schwieriger Bankkredite aufzunehmen. Dies ist auf die hoheren Eigenkapitalanforderungen der finanzierenden Banken zuruckzufuhren. In Folge dessen mussten sich Unternehmen nach alternativen Finanzierungsquellen umschauen. Fur mittelstandische Unternehmen erschien dabei das wachsende Angebot an Standard Mezzaninen (Programm-Mezzanine) als besonders reizvoll. In den Jahren 2004 - 2007 nutzten viele mittelstandische Unternehmen das Angebot von Standard Mezzanin-Programmen. Im Gegensatz zu Private Equity war es mit Hilfe dieser Instrumente moglich die Eigenkapitalquote zu erhohen ohne dabei wesentliche Entschei-dungsrechte abzugeben. Eine Studie von PricewaterhouseCoopers, im Auftrag des Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Technologie, zur Falligkeit von Standard Mezzaninen, fuhrte zu dem Ergebnis, dass viele mittelstandische Unternehmen ab 2011 Probleme mit der Ruckzahlung ihrer aufgenommen Standard Mezzanine haben werden. Nicht wenige sehen Standard-Mezzanin-Programme als gescheitert, wobei kurzlich ein positives Signal durch die vollstandige Ruckzahlung zuzuglich Verzinsung des ersten Standard-Mezzanin-Programms PREPS 2004-1 gemeldet wurde.
