Following the success of their collaboration on Robin Hood, David
Wood and Dave and Toni Arthur wrote Jack the Lad, a musical
celebration of Jack, the ubiquitous hero or everyman of English
legend, myth and folklore - from Little Jack Horner, through Jack
and the Beanstalk to Spring Heeled Jack, the Terror of London. The
setting is a gypsy encampment, where a series of Jack tales and
songs are performed by the gypsies to celebrate the 80th birthday
of their senior member - affectionately known as Jack the Lad. The
play, therefore, depicts contemporary gypsy life, as well as
traditional gypsy customs and superstitions, and is a delightful
amalgam of the traditional arts of storytelling, singing and
dancing, with a mumming play, a shadow-mime and puppetry also
employed within the main framework.
Folk singer and folk music collector, writer, painter, journalist,
art critic, whalerman, sheep station roustabout, Marxist, and much
more - this is the story of A. L. (Bert) Lloyd's extraordinary
life. A. L. Lloyd played a key part in the folk music revival of
the 1950s and 60s, but that is only part of his story. Dave Arthur
documents how Lloyd became a member of the Communist Party,
forceful antifascist, trade unionist and an important part of
left-wing culture from the early 1930s to his death in 1982.
Following his return from Australia as a 21-year-old, self-educated
agricultural labourer, he was at the heart of the most important
left-wing movements and highly respected for his knowledge in
various fields. Dave Arthur recounts the life of a creative,
passionate and life-loving Marxist, and in so doing provides a
social history of a turbulent twentieth century.

This is a series of playlets which tell the various well-known
tales of Robin Hood. The possibilities for presenting the play are
numerous open stage, promenade, open air as well as on a proscenium
stage. There is a basic cast of fourteen, but the authors envisage
productions in which large numbers of local people take part,
emphasizing the basic concept of the play which is that of a
musical celebration by a whole community.14 women or men
