This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by
David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that
is the quantification of these problems and represents the
twenty-five years' worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since
the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly 'metal fatigue')
is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions
and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks
is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture
Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to
quantify and this remains the case with so-called 'free initiation'
and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising
features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from
the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially
a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem
is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The
contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the
subject and to practitioner in industry.

value of various approaches for answering specific questions is
also addressed.
Key Features

Techniques
* An entirely new chapter covering the census methods recommended

As it becomes ever more expensive to purchase land for conservation purposes, it is becoming increasingly important both to manage existing sites properly and to create new habitats. This comprehensive volume provides a pragmatic, habitat-by-habitat guide to conservation management, in which the prescriptions and methods are based on sound science coupled with practical experience. For each habitat, the book guides the reader through the options and solutions, highlights potential problems, and gives good and bad examples of habitat management in the past. This will be required reading for all practicing ecologists, land managers, wardens, landscape architects and conservationists, and will provide a valuable reference for students of ecology, conservation and environmental science.

There are some who take on the mantle of adventurer for the gold
and the glory. Others have the dubious title thrust upon them
through circumstance or fate. Then there are some who seek out the
adventurous life for the sheer sake of knowledge and discovery of
the unknown. Enter the Deductionist. The Deductionist is an
original base class which will find a niche in almost any
adventuring group. Highly skilled, and incredibly perceptive, the
Deductionist overcomes his adversaries with reason, rather than
sheer brawn. The Deductionist is a fun class capable of a wide
array of abilities and their reason powers grant them almost
supernatural abilities. Each Deductionist is a master of a chosen
discipline of knowledge, with almost sage-like ability. With over
38 deductive abilities to overcome their foes, no single
Deductionist will be the same. Confound your opponents with the
truth, avoid their blows with danger sense, exploit their
weaknesses and even learn mystic abilities. This sourcebook also
includes 17 new feats, 13 new pieces of equipment and three new
archetypes: The Operative, The Eldritch Inspector and the Shadowed
Avenger. Knowledge is power, and it is in your hands now.
Long have the fey captured mankind's imaginations. Dwellers in
Dream is a fey-themed player sourcebook containing five all-new
races for the Pathfinder RPG. This new sourcebook explores five
original fey-themed races for your d20 and Pathfinder games. These
are not your standard fantasy fey either, these are creations from
the darkest recesses of the twisted minds over at Total Party Kill
Games. The first of the five new player races is the Briarborn, a
plant-like race born of nature's response to harm and injury. They
grow quickly and are a measured response to the likes of orcs and
men who would seek to harm the world itself. Then there are the
Crimbil, goblin-blooded fey and snatchers of children. Next, we
explore the True Changelings, mercurial shape-shifting fey. There
is also the Glimmerkin, a race of elves who used magic to enter a
chrysalis state for an age and emerged something altogether
different. Lastly is the Sylfaen, a brutal warden of nature and fey
lands, the leaders of the Wyld Hunts. Each race is fully developed
with a total of 80 pages of content There are tons of new
fey-themed feats, abilities, traits, archetypes, spells, magical
items and even a new plane of existence.
Each year from 1978 through 1987 the Center for Creative Leadership
hosted an event called Creativity Week, during which a select group
of researchers and practitioners would get together for a
high-energy exchange of ideas on organizational creativity.
Discussions explored such themes as individual innovation,
creativity and teamwork, structuring the organization for
innovation, and the relation of innovation to culture and
technology. This book, which offers papers based on many of the
best Creativity Week presentations, is thus a record of recent
thinking, both practical and theoretical, on how organizational
effectiveness can be improved.
This flexible resource contains lesson plans and worksheets to
inspire pupils of poetry and literature. It is a choice alternative
to past exam paper practice. This book contains everything an
English teacher could need to engage and captivate their pupils in
contemporary poetry and prose. The step-by-step lesson plans are
easy to adapt to suit individual teachers' needs, and include
suggestions for utilising ICT and homework ideas. The reflective
style of the photocopiable worksheets encourages pupils to draw on
their own experiences when analysing the issues raised. The
contents are themed to reflect the current curriculum, and to be
entertaining for the teacher and students alike. Extracts include
"In Mrs Tilscher's Class" by Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and "To
Sir, With Love" by E.R.Braithwaite. English teachers and pupils
aged 14-16 will relish this set of inclusive and accessible lesson
plans and worksheets, although advanced younger pupils or adult
learners, especially those on EFL courses, will also find them
absorbing. All materials are also available for download from the
Continuum website. It's hard enough for teachers to fit all their
marking, extra-curricular duties and training into their lives, let
alone finding time to think up exciting new ways of delivering
their subject to a mixed-ability class. This new series offers
complete, curriculum-friendly lesson plans for busy secondary
school teachers of various disciplines. Each title includes an
assortment of approximately 70 lesson plans designed to motivate
and inspire students. Each plan consists of a teacher's sheet,
providing: the aims and objectives of the lesson; the materials
required; a lesson starter, main lesson plan and plenary, each with
suggested timeframes to help teachers keep inside the parameters of
the lesson; homework ideas, and guidance on how to adapt the
activities to make them harder or easier for gifted and talented,
or less able pupils. Each plan also includes a photocopiable, or
downloadable student worksheet which corresponds to the teacher's
lesson plan.
