Whales, although among our most important and interesting animals,
have been little studied until recently. Almost a third of about
seventy living cetacean species have been recorded in North
American Pacific coast waters.
Our word whale describes glimpses of surfacing cetaceans; its Old
English root hvael means "a wheel." A large whale's rolling back
often looks just like the rim of a wheel revolving below the
surface. Humans have watched whales with fascination for a long
time. There is an emerging whale culture, in which whales have
actual - or at least symbolic - importance in our society. Although
first substantive human contact with whales most likely began with
whaling - archeology suggests an aboriginal whaling tradition
dating back 3,000 years on the West Coast - contemporary interest
in whales now primarily concerns how to conserve these species for
the future.
Whales of the West Coast provides a broad overview of whale natural
history, with particular reference to species found in the waters
of the Pacific Northwest. The book also examines human interactions
with whales, from how First Nations practised whaling on the BC
coast and how commercial whaling spread through the Pacific and
continued on the Northwest coast until late in this century; to how
science has evolved from measurement and anatomy into exciting
studies of wild whales. Population decline due to whaling inspired
the modern whale conservation movement how to ensure that whales
share the seas with future human generations, and first hand
experiences through aquaria, land-based watching and whale watching
by boat. We also learn how to enjoy whales without direct contact
with the living animal. There are also lists with useful
information, including Whales Words, addresses of relevant
agencies, publications and other media. Whales Through Time
provides a chronological framework to the whle story, from the
earliest items to the most recent discoveries. Through the seasons
in a month-by-month list of when and where whales regularly appear.
The book also lists major sites and services which make it possible
to see whales in captivity and in the wild.
Huge, powerful, intelligent and beautiful, whales have fascinated
human beings for millennia. Here is a book that will answer every
question you ever had about whales and dolphins of the west coast.
Salt Spring, Pender, Galiano, Mayne and Saturna are the best known
of the Southern Gulf Islands. Their residents value a rich food and
drink heritage, and experiment busily with new foods and approaches
to improve diversity and flavour, and support special diets and
local sustainability. They celebrate slow foods--and slow islands;
and many embrace a 100-mile--or even a 100 yard--diet.
Organic Food is prominent in island life--at farmers' markets, farm
gate honesty stands, community gardens, potlucks, wine festivals,
and the biggest Gulf Island party--the Saturna Lamb Roast. Some
growers preserve heritage varieties, others introduce new crops and
unfamiliar foods to the Gulf Islands--and the province. Island
producers are famous for lamb and cheese, and celebrity chefs open
small intimate restaurants, creating with local products for
discerning residents and visitors. Recognized experts teach organic
gardening and creative cuisine.
Hidden in the woods are micro-coffee roasters, organic
chocolatiers, wood-fired bakeries, salmon smokers, and rogue cheese
and tofu makers. Pender, Saturna, and Salt Spring all boast
vineyards, developing new wines to complement local foods. the
islands food industry is rich in character, passion and variety.
Hostelries range from the 5-star Poets Cove Resort on Pender, to
the more modest but equally delicious fare found at La Berengerie
on Galiano,
Veteran writers and long-time island residents Andrea and David
Spalding have explored the highways and byways of the islands,
interviewing farmers and chefs, gardeners and artists. They have
gathered and created recipes that reflect the variety and abundance
of island food year round, that can be enjoyed by locals, visitors
and tourists, and carry the islanders' passion for food to distant
places. Traditional and experimental recipes from the islands'
chefs include Brie and Squash Pizza, Lavender and Lemon Roasted
Saturna Lamb and the blackberry pie that won the blue ribbon at the
Fall Fair. They capture the flavours of the Gulf Islands for
islanders and visitors, and provide a perfect way to escape for
those who have yet to enjoy the islands--without even setting foot
on BC ferries.

What do we know about dinosaurs, and how do we know it? How did
dinosaurs grow, move, eat, and reproduce? Were they warm-blooded or
cold-blooded? How intelligent were they? How are the various groups
of dinosaurs related to each other, and to other kinds of living
and extinct vertebrates? What can the study of dinosaurs tell us
about the process of evolution? And why did typical dinosaurs
become extinct? All of these questions, and more, are addressed in
the new, expanded, second edition of The Complete Dinosaur. Written
by many of the world's leading experts on the "fearfully great"
reptiles, the book s 45 chapters cover what we have learned about
dinosaurs, from the earliest discoveries of dinosaurs to the most
recent controversies. Where scientific contention exists, the
editors have let the experts agree to disagree. Copiously
illustrated and accessible to all readers from the enthusiastic
amateur to the most learned professional paleontologist, The
Complete Dinosaur is a feast for serious dinosaur lovers
everywhere."
