They are a select few. They are the royalty of baseball. They embody the history and drama of the sport. Their plaques hang in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, and many of them believe their induction to the Hall was anything but guaranteed. Despite baseball writers telling them that it was only a matter of time, few took those words as matter-of-fact. For even those Hall of Famers who were told to wait by their phone at an appointed hour, some still were stunned after hearing the news from the Baseball Writers Association of America or the Hall of Fame. The reactions to the call varied, from stoic to overwhelming emotion, but the Hall of Famers all shared at their core a trait - humility. Race, sexual orientation, and the similar qualities ancillary to gender bear special exploration in how they impact an athlete's story. Central to this volume is the contention that women in their role as inherent outsiders are placed in a unique position even more complicated than the usual experiences of inequality and discord associated with race and sports. The contributors explore and critique the notion that in order to be considered among the pantheon of athletic heroes one cannot deviate from the traditional demographic profile, that of the white male. These essays look specifically and critically at the nature of gender and sexuality within the contested nexus of race, reputation, and sport. "Reconstructing Fame: Sport, Race, and Evolving Reputations" includes essays on Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Curt Flood, Paul Robeson, Jim Thorpe, Bill Russell, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos. The essayists in this volume write about twentieth-century athletes whose careers were affected by racism and whose post-career reputations have improved as society's understanding of race changed. Contributors attempt to clarify the stories of these sports stars and their places as twentieth-century icons by analyzing the various myths that surround them.

When media, fans, sports leagues, and the athletes themselves commemorate sports legends, shifts in popular perceptions often serve to obscure an athlete's role in history. Such revisions can lack coherence and trivialize the efforts of some legendary competitors and those associated with them. Adding racial tensions to this process further complicates the task of preserving the valuable achievements of key players.
