The Lost Scientists of World War II tells the stories of scientists
from Germany and other European countries who vanished during World
War II. These erudite scholars contributed to diverse scientific
fields and were associated with some of the world's leading
universities and research institutions. Despite their proficiency,
they all sought help from agencies to relocate to the UK in the
1930s, but were unable to secure the necessary assistance. This
book highlights the extraordinary narratives of thirty such
scientific refugees, delving into the reasons behind the
unavailability of aid and presenting fresh insights into the tragic
fates or astounding survival experiences of these individuals.

If you, like many gardeners, have a fascination for plant names and
their derivations, but stop short of wanting to study botanical
nomenclature in great depth, this book is for you! Precise naming
is essential to be able to identify plants accurately and most
gardeners have at least some knowledge of ‘botanical Latin’.
But a plant’s full botanical name does much more than give it a
unique label. The name can often tell you where the plant
originated, who discovered it, what shape it is, and much else
besides. What’s more, the name can be used and understood
anywhere in the world. This is a book to have with you at the
garden centre, and one to keep beside your bed for an entertaining
read. Plant Names Explained is an indispensible guide and makes the
subject accessible, enjoyable and fun. It shows not only how plant
names work, but also how you can make use of them in entertaining
as well as practical ways. A selective alphabetical listing of
botanical names and their explanations is accompanied by features
exploring cultivar names, with translations of foreign terms and
lists of plants you can linkwith special occasions and
celebrations, or with personal names. Other features highlight the
places, people and plant characteristics that lie behind the names:
gardens and nurseries, countries and cities, plant hunters and
gardeners, colours, characteristics and habitats. Plant Names
Explained is an essential and fascinating guide to the subject.
What may at first seem a dry but necessary convention is revealed
to be a way of opening up the intriguing world of plants.
'Clary's account makes for fascinating reading, not least because
of its clear style and copious citation of primary sources and
original scientific articles. The author provides a compelling
narrative of ... Schroedinger's departure in 1933 from a highly
eminent position at the University of Berlin to a precarious,
untenured position at Magdalen College ... with political and
scientific considerations deftly woven together.' [Read Full
Review]ScienceErwin Schroedinger was one of the greatest scientists
of all time but it is not widely known that he was a Fellow at
Magdalen College, Oxford in the 1930s. This book is an
authoritative account of Schroedinger's time in Oxford by Sir David
Clary, an expert on quantum chemistry and a former President of
Magdalen College, who describes Schroedinger's remarkable life and
scientific contributions in a language that can be understood by
all. Through access to many unpublished manuscripts, the author
reveals in unprecedented detail the events leading up to
Schroedinger's sudden departure from Berlin in 1933, his arrival in
Oxford and award of the Nobel Prize, his dramatic escape from the
Nazis in Austria to return to Oxford, and his urgent flight from
Belgium to Dublin at the start of the Second World War.The book
presents many acute observations from Schroedinger's wife Anny and
his daughter Ruth, who was born in Oxford and became an
acquaintance of the author in the last years of her life. It also
includes a remarkable letter sent to Schroedinger in Oxford from
Adolf Hitler, thanking him for his services to the state as a
professor in Berlin. Schroedinger's intense interactions with other
great scientists who were also refugees during this period,
including Albert Einstein and Max Born, are examined in the context
of the chaotic political atmosphere of the time. Fascinating
anecdotes of how this flamboyant Austrian scientist interacted with
the President and Fellows of a highly traditional Oxford College in
the 1930s are a novel feature of the book.A gripping and intimate
narrative of one of the most colourful scientists in history,
Schroedinger in Oxford explains how his revolutionary breakthrough
in quantum mechanics has become such a central feature in 21st
century science.
From the popularity of cable television shows concerning building
choppers or the criminal aspects of the motorcycle gang lifestyle,
to the phenomenal success of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, no
one can deny America has become fascinated with bikers and the
machines they love. Author Dave Spurgeon provides a firsthand look
into the world of the Harley enthusiast and beyond. He takes you to
where few have dared to tread-into the sinister, and often
misunderstood, reality of the true one-percenters. He takes you on
a ride into a place about which many are curious, but few know
well. Be advised: This is not the exhaustive work of an
investigative reporter, nor an account of the zealous efforts of an
undercover law enforcement operation. This is the personal
chronicle of Spurgeon's 15 years in the fast lane. Sobering,
sometimes humorous, yet always painfully accurate, it begins with
his love affair with the motorcycle and then continues into the
ominous 1%er Brotherhood of the bike gang culture in America. You
will be educated, entertained, warned, and enlightened by this
brutally honest narrative from a man who has been there and back
and lived to tell about it.

Good biosecurity policy decisions, particularly in relation to
plant industry protection, are of ever increasing importance.
Growth in the speed and diversity of trade, the effects of climate
change and the resultant spread of pests and diseases continue to
highlight this. This book contains an introduction to the issues
confronting plant biosecurity policymakers and how the economic
risks of invasive species can be assessed over time. It describes
both probability models that show what might happen if species
'invade' a region and values models that help decide what
management actions should be taken. As the first book of its kind
focusing on a comprehensive range of policies, case studies and
applications, Plant Biosecurity Policy Evaluation is perfect for
biosecurity policy makers, decision-support specialists, advanced
students of agricultural studies, public policy and invasive
species research.
EU Cohesion policy, along with support for agriculture and rural
development, is one of the main items of EU spending. As such, the
performance of the policy has come under increasing scrutiny.
Perhaps surprisingly, however, past attempts to assess the
effectiveness of the EU's have proved to be highly ambivalent. This
book examines the long-term achievements of Cohesion policy from
1989 to 2012 and draws out the main policy implications. Originally
undertaken for the European Commission by the authors, this major
longitudinal study adopts an innovative approach to assessing the
effectiveness and achievements of this policy, building on case
studies of 15 regions from different parts of Europe. The rationale
for the book is to present the findings of the research in a
concise and digestible manner that will be of value to
policy-makers across the EU and to academics interested in the past
effectiveness and future direction of the policy. The research
brings out messages for the conduct of Cohesion policy in the
current programme period, covering 2014-2020. It also has
implications for the debates, already launched, on how Cohesion
policy might evolve after 2020."

Origins of Globalization draws widely on ancient sources and
modern economic theory to detail the concept of "known world"
globalization, arguing that a mixed economy--similar in many
respects to our own--existed in a variety of forms throughout the
ancient world. By analyzing the business practices of the ancient
world--phenomena such as resource and market seeking behavior,
international trade from China, India and Rome, to Africa and even
northern and western parts of Europe, Small and Medium Size
Enterprises (SMEs) operating internationally and outsourcing
production, multicultural workforces, tariff reduced zones,
interregional tax issues, and the management of currency risks--the
authors provide readers with a unique historical interpretation of
the contemporary globalizing economy and a durable theoretical
framework for future historical economic analyses.

An estimated 3,500 people die every day in the UK. If someone at
work or their partner or close family member dies, managers and
colleagues need to respond appropriately. This book breaks new
ground in placing bereavement on the management agenda. It
addresses some challenging questions such as: What to say and what
not to say? How to balance the needs of the person and the job? How
do you get it right in a diverse, multi-cultural workforce? How do
you decide what time off is reasonable? How can other people at
work help, as well as avoiding making the situation worse? This
book is an essential guide for anyone in an organisation who has to
take responsibility in the event of death. It covers issues such as
what do in the event of a sudden death at work, managing staff who
are terminally ill, and practical help after death including
funerals. It is a unique and constant point of reference for anyone
concerned with one of the most challenging issues to be faced in
the workplace.

Livestock housing is a major determinant of animal health, welfare
and productivity. This book presents the important principles and
processes by which housing influences these outcomes, and shows how
an understanding of these can be translated into specifications for
housing designs. The emphasis is on the building as a means to an
environmental end, focusing on the biological responses and welfare
needs of animals in the context of commercial and economic
considerations. The book provides a thorough literature review as
well as practical guidance and is aimed at academics and
professionals in animal production, veterinary science and
agricultural engineering.
In modern society, we have professionalized our care for the dying
and deceased in hospitals and hospices, churches and funeral homes,
cemeteries and mausoleums to aid dazed and disoriented mourners.
But these formal institutions can be alienating and cold, leaving
people craving a more humane mourning and burial process. The
burial treatment itself has come to be seen as wasteful and
harmful-marked by chemicals, plush caskets, and manicured greens.
Today's bereaved are therefore increasingly turning away from the
old ways of death and searching for a more personalized,
environmentally reponsible, and ethical means of grief. Is the
Cemetery Dead? gets to the heart of the tragedy of death,
chronicling how Americans are inventing new or adapting old
traditions, burial places, and memorials. In illustrative prose,
David Charles Sloane shows how people are taking control of their
grief by bringing their relatives home to die, interning them in
natural burial grounds, mourning them online, or memorializing them
streetside with a shrine, ghost bike, or RIP mural. Today's
mourners are increasingly breaking free of conventions to better
embrace the person they want to remember. As Sloane shows, these
changes threaten the future of the cemetery, causing cemeteries to
seek to become more responsive institutions. A trained historian,
Sloane is also descendent from multiple generations of cemetery
managers and he grew up in Syracuse's Oakwood Cemetery. Enriched by
these experiences, as well as his personal struggles with
overwhelming grief, Is the Cemetery Dead? is a remarkable and
accessible tour of our new American way of death.
Aristotle initiated the systematic investigation of perception, the
emotions, memory, desire and action, developing his own account of
these phenomena and their interconnection. The aim of this book is
to gain a philosophical understanding of his views and to examine
how far they withstand critical scrutiny. Aristotle's account, it
is argued, constitutes a philosophically live alternative to
conventional post-Cartesian thinking about psychological phenomena
and their place in a material world. It offers a way to dissolve,
rather than solve, the mind-body problem we have inherited.
'This well-written and highly readable book makes a major
contribution to advancing our understanding of the contribution
that economics can make to analysing the impact of international
trade policies for environmental risks ... Regardless of the
likelihood that the current WTO dispute settlement procedures can
be changed in the way suggested by the authors of this book, it is
essential reading for those interested in the contribution that
economics can make to advancing our understanding of the
implications of international trade law for environmental
issues.'Journal of Agricultural EconomicsWe live in a world that is
increasingly dependent on international trade in a context of
substantial regional/national political tensions. Adding to this is
an emerging understanding and concern about the social impact of
biosecurity and ecosystem services risks associated with such
trade. As the key international trade 'arbiter', the World Trade
Organization (WTO) has never before faced such complexity within
its decision-making remit. With increasing numbers of bilateral and
regional agreements, as well as new developments emerging such as
the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific
Partnership (CPTPP) initiated by multi-national corporations in
2018, the WTO needs to implement ways of reinforcing its legitimacy
and enhancing its relevance. This book provides an original analysis
of these linked developments and delivers a timely contribution to
resolving environment-related international trade disputes. It
provides a clear roadmap for improving WTO trade dispute resolution
procedures so both biosecurity and ecosystem services risks are
considered in evaluating the social, economic and environmental
impacts of international trade proposals. In so doing, the WTO
should deliver enhanced multilateral social welfare.
