Military History and the Military Profession (Hardcover): David Charters, Marc Milner, JB Wilson Military History and the Military Profession (Hardcover)
David Charters, Marc Milner, JB Wilson
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume examines the state of the art in modern military history, and the utility of the subject as a training, educational, and policy-relevant tool for professional armed forces. Part 1 explores the state of military historical writing in Britain and the United States, and on specific topics, such as air warfare, naval warfare, intelligence, low-intensity conflict, and the most recent trends in the New Military History. Part 2 illustrates the utility of the historical method in analyzing command decisions, providing an institutional memory for a wide range of policy, command, and operational problems, and its application in specific subjects such as naval strategy, and by certain countries (the US, Germany, and the Soviet Union) in the search for lessons and fundamental principles. The contributing authors represent an impressive cross-section of prominent academic and official historians recognized as leading scholars in the study of military history. The Foreword is written by Anne N. Foreman, Undersecretary of the United States Air Force.

This book will be of interest to the academic and the official historian (and their students) and to military professionals.

David Charters
R309 Discovery Miles 3 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This is a Liverpool history with a difference. Packed with information, this lively book is not only about events but about people - our Great Liverpudlians - and the part they each played in shaping the city. There are many familiar faces, of course, but they stand shoulder to shoulder with the ordinary men and women who have made Liverpool what it is. And as well as bringing the unsung heroes and their interesting lives to our attention, Daily Post columnist David Charters has also dug deep to unearth less well known details about those famous names we all thought we knew everything about. Great Liverpudlians takes the reader on a wonderfully enjoyable journey through the city's past, introducing us to an array of colourful characters, from kings and politicians, to philanthropists, poets, musicians, comedians, sportsmen and women, barrow girls and clergy. All human life is here, as they say, and what is any great city if not the sum of its people?

Intelligence Analysis and Assessment (Hardcover): David Charters, Stuart Farson, Glenn P. Hastedt Intelligence Analysis and Assessment (Hardcover)
David Charters, Stuart Farson, Glenn P. Hastedt
R4,630 Discovery Miles 46 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

By comparison with the other facets of intelligence, the analytical role provided by intelligence agencies has not received the scholarly attention that it rightly deserves. In October 1994 the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS) and the Intelligence Section of the International Studies Association (ISA) attended to this deficit by holding a special international conference on the subject in Ottawa. This volume is the product of that conference. The essays comprising it may be divided into four self-contained sets of essays. The first critically examines the assessment systems now in place in Britain, the USA, Germany and Australia. Each is written by someone who participated at a senior level and hence knows their respective strengths and weaknesses well. The second series of essays looks at the bureaucratic dynamics of analysis and assessment. While two specifically examine how well intelligence producers have related to their political masters, another dissects the internal relationships that have developed between CIA analysts and their managers. The changing ground that intelligence is currently experiencing is the focus of the third section. Here such new analytical priorities as the environment, peacekeeping and arms proliferation are singled out for study. Finally, the volume considers the impact of new technologies and modes of communication on intelligence gathering and analysis.

Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety (Paperback): Ganapathy Ramachandran, David Charters Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety (Paperback)
Ganapathy Ramachandran, David Charters
R1,577 Discovery Miles 15 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Fire safety regulations in many countries require Fire Risk Assessment to be carried out for buildings such as workplaces and houses in multiple occupation. This duty is imposed on a "Responsible Person" and also on any other persons having control of buildings in compliance with the requirements specified in the regulations. Although regulations only require a qualitative assessment of fire risk, a quantitative assessment is an essential first step for performing cost-benefit analysis of alternative fire strategies to comply with the regulations and selecting the most cost-effective strategy. To facilitate this assessment, various qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative techniques of fire risk assessment, already developed, are critically reviewed in this book and some improvements are suggested. This book is intended to be an expanded version of Part 7: Probabilistic risk assessment, 2003, a Published Document (PD) to British Standard BS 7974: 2001 on the Application of Fire Safety Engineering Principles to the Design of Buildings. Ganapathy Ramachandran and David Charters were co-authors of PD 7974 Part 7. Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety is essential reading for consultants, academics, fire safety engineers, fire officers, building control officers and students in fire safety engineering. It also provides useful tools for fire protection economists and risk management professionals, including those involved in fire insurance underwriting.

Of the many functions carried out by intelligence agencies, analysis and assessment has received comparatively little scholarly attention. Trust Me, I'm a Banker (Hardcover): David Charters Trust Me, I'm a Banker (Hardcover)

In the tradition of "American Psycho" comes this hilariously cynical and often-brutal novel skewering the world of investment banking, set in the heart of London high finance
Meet Dave Hart, just your typical investment banker. It's not long until Bonus Day, the most important day of the year, and anything less than a million pounds would be an insult. After all, Dave has to buy a new car, a new Rolex for his wife, and a second home in the country. Not to mention support a few personal habits, legal or otherwise, that gentlemen bankers don't discuss in public. Unfortunately, a million really isn't what it used to be, and no one else seems to value Dave as much as he knows he's worth. Luckily, competence and charm have never been accurate barometers for success in high finance, and Dave just might be able to weasel and blunder his way to the top.
Extremely funny and razor-sharp, "Trust Me, I'm a Banker" is the tale of one man's quest for outrageous compensation and alpha status in a world where pitiless ambition, insecurity, and moral ambiguity are second nature and glitter is far more important than gold. This flawless social satire is a highly enjoyable voyeuristic glimpse into our modern culture of narcissism, materialism, and bottomless greed.
