This book provides a contemporary account of the linkages between
the academic field of conflict resolution and the practice of
military peacekeeping, through the lens of pre-deployment training
for military personnel about to embark on UN peacekeeping
operations. Military personnel serving on United Nations
peacekeeping operations are deployed into highly challenging
post-conflict environments, where the likelihood of violence
remains high. Moreover, these personnel are deployed part of a
wider peace process, and are thus situated as an anchor point in a
transition from war to peace. This dimension of their work
therefore means that a range of skills and techniques are relied
upon, which come not from traditional military training, but from
other, non-traditional fields. It is into this gap where the
academic field of conflict resolution has made a valuable
contribution to understanding international peacekeeping. Since the
1970's, studies have sought to understand international
peacekeeping as a necessary stage in conflict de-escalation, and
ultimately transformation. From this, there is a history of
engagement including studies which seek to understand the skills
peacekeepers may need to assist them in their day to day
activities, and the role that international peacekeeping plays in
wider projects of conflict transformation.
The current challenges and potential future of peacekeeping in an
increasingly complex world take center stage in this far-reaching
collection. Contributors advance a nuanced picture of post-conflict
environments across different areas of the globe while considering
possible deployments of peacekeeping, traditional military and UN
forces in semi-autonomous complementary roles. Longstanding debate
topics such as the need for a standing UN army and the field
implementation of global right-to-protect concepts are discussed,
as are emerging ideas in civilian protection, atrocity prevention
and balancing triage operations with long-term peacebuilding
efforts. Other dispatches chronicle key issues and concerns
regarding peacekeeping operations in Brazil, China and diverse
regions of Africa. Included in the coverage: Protecting strangers:
reflections on a cosmopolitan peacekeeping capacity. Towards a
standing UN force for peacekeeping. Challenges posed by
intervention brigades and other coercive measures in support of the
protection of civilians. Addressing the criminal accountability of
peacekeepers. The evolution of China's role in peacekeeping and
atrocity crime prevention. Businesses and investors as stakeholders
in atrocity crime prevention. Multiple viewpoints, a global scope
and real-world clarity make Perspectives on Peacekeeping and
Atrocity Prevention an invaluable resource to advance the work of
humanitarians, criminologists and students of and professionals in
international relations. "This collection of articles effectively
points to the challenges, complexities and sensitivities of
preventing and halting mass atrocity crimes in part through the use
of UN peacekeeping operations. The volume also inspires further
efforts, including the integration of new and younger stakeholders,
to mitigate massive human rights crimes and fully implement the
Responsibility to Protect." Dr. Gyoergy Tatar Chair, Budapest
Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass
Atrocities "In a refreshing and engaging manner, this edited volume
represents a much-needed contribution to the debate on how best to
address current security threats given the limitations and the
possibilities of peacekeeping and atrocity prevention. A compelling
feature of the book is its exploration of often-neglected
stakeholder perspectives alongside first-hand knowledge of the UN
system and astute academic observations of key peacekeeping
concepts, mandates and practices. Each chapter's concluding
recommendations invite scholars and policy makers to critically
interrogate their own beliefs, assumptions and preferred solutions
for keeping the peace and preventing mass atrocity violence." Dr.

Bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives on the future of
UN peace operations, this book explores the interrelated dynamics
of UN peace operations and peacebuilding practices through the
lenses of conflict resolution, protection and accountability. The
collection includes coverage of issues ranging from strengthening
partnerships between regional institutions and the UN; improving UN
policing and stabilisation mechanisms; the application of new
technologies in peace operations and implementing security sector
reform; to ending sexual exploitation and abuse and enhancing the
protection of children. Authors place people at the centre of
peacekeeping by interrogating current and past UN initiatives,
chart how peacekeeping is evolving in response to changes in global
security, assess reform and norm change within missions themselves,
and offer original perspectives on the future of UN peace
operations. Contributions also include new and innovative
theoretical and empirical research located across multiple
disciplines, including political science, history, law, gender
studies, and criminology.

Medical marijuana patients in the 14 states (at the time of this
writing) that currently allow medical marijuana use now have an
eBook guide to getting by with just a few plants. "How to Grow
Medical Marijuana: An in-Depth Quick Grow Guide: with over 155
full-color photos/illustrations" is a very different "how-to-grow
marijuana" book. Most of the instructions, currently available in
book or DVD form assume the buyer wishes to grow a large and
illegal amount of marijuana. This book based on Curran's DVD shows
patients how to get by with the few plants that state laws allow
marijuana patients. Previously, any medical marijuana patient who
wanted to get by with a few plants had to do some very serious
mental arithmetic. In addition, those would be growers had to
choose between a variety of methods, soil, soil-less or hydroponics
which could make the task if not somewhat intimidating, at least so
choice heavy that there is too much room for error. Learn How to
Grow Medical Marijuana: An in-Depth Quick Grow Guide: with over 155
full-color photos/illustrations, addresses, one very specific
method of growing that anyone can master. David Curran, author of
The Complete Ginseng Grower's Manual, and an agricultural writer
for many years, became a medical marijuana user in 2010 after four
years of increasing pain from chronic kidney stones. Says Curran,
"I would sit on my couch and take codeine all day and if I barely
moved I could get by without too much pain. The pain was so bad I
would heat clay or rice heating pads, and put them on my side. I
would get them so hot they left permanent scars, but at least the
heat relieved some of the pain. Then a friend suggested medical
marijuana. Before long the kidney stone pain was gone. I could walk
around and do things again. Medical marijuana gave me my life
back." One of the things Curran was able to do was create a video
on how to focus on growing just enough medical marijuana for one
patient's needs. This book is based on the video. Instead of
covering every single method of growing, Curran picked one.
According to Curran (an agricultural writer with many years of
experience), the soil-less method is the easiest for anyone to
master. This book chooses soil-less with a specific soil mixture,
which has the advantages of hydroponics without the risks. (if you
make a mistake with hydroponics all your plants may die) And
presents an almost foolproof method of growing that almost anyone
can master, using both CFLs and LED lights and sunlight when
possible. The book covers everything from mixing the soil-less mix
to how to create two small (2 x 2 x 6) grow sheds to provide a
person's medical needs with only 6 plants. There is a myth out
there that only sunlight or expensive (high powered-energy
consuming) sodium lamps can grow quality medicine. According to
Curran it is true plants grown with LED light will not grow as
"tall" as with Sodium lights (Would you really want to try and grow
16 foot plants in your apartment?), but the quality of the medicine
will be as potent as the plant can provide using any other method.
Curran who suffered from the intense pain of kidney stones, can
attest to the method providing quality medicine from experience.
The book is intended only for medical marijuana patients in the
states which allow it, or their agents and by purchasing this book
you indicate that you are a medical licensed marijuana patient or
the agent thereof.
This is not an overview but programmed instruction. This book
shows, step-by-step, how a 650-watt, off-grid, do-it-yourself
solar-panel system was set up. The system partially replaced a
2-gallon-a-day gasoline-driven generator system and was estimated
to pay for itself (based on the price of gas) in about 2-3 years.
Starting from the ground up, it explains the importance of
grounding and explains how to ground the system as it is set up.
Topics include: How to calculate overall energy needs and how to
reconcile them with space concerns and affordability. Solar panel
math is explained simply so that viewers can calculate their needs
in terms of: batteries, inverters, panels and wiring. How to
re-evaluate and reshape energy usage to fit what user can
realistically afford is explained. How to set up typical inverters
and charge controllers. Safety issues. How to connect wiring and
figure out the wire size needed with an amazingly detailed appendix
on wire size. How to set up a battery and inverter system first,
and test them as a working unit before adding solar. What to
consider when choosing solar panels. The difference between setting
up panels and batteries in series or parallel. Using a combiner box
to add additional panels later. Choosing a generator for backup or
to equalize your batteries. How to test the specific gravity of
batteries with or without a hydrometer. How to wire panels.
Lightning grounding. As well as system layout, washing panels once
they are setup, etc. The focus here is an easy to understand
explanation of how to set up and independent, self-sustaining
energy system that can support most of the needs of a small
off-grid home. Although it covers an off-grid system it is just as
helpful for someone who wants to be partially on grid but would
rather set up the system themselves.
This inspirational book can help anyone learn to actually be more
intelligent. Too many people put down their own intelligence and
have learned thinking patterns that reinforce that belief. Learn
how to escape that pattern and boost your own effective
intelligence. Learn how to do better on tests. Learn how high test
anxiety can be to blame for poor performance. Learn why
intelligence tests may not be a valid indication of your
intellectual worth. Learn how ordering your approach to problem
solving can increase your problem solving skills. And learn how
there are other ways to define intelligence. Have you ever spent
time looking for something you lost? Do you go over the same places
you've checked before? This book is for you The author went from
very low scores on college entrance exams in high school to an
invitation to join MENSA (high IQ society) after taking his
graduate record exams as a adult. These are the secrets that
enabled that tremendous jump in intelligence.
Each year Dave Curran travels alone by canoe into the Maine
wilderness. He's paddled the Seboeis, the Allagash and the Moose.
Despite the foolhardiness of such an adventure, he prefers to go
alone. It's easier to plan, and going alone he's more focused, less
distracted. He goes for the challenge, battling weather, bears,
black flies, mosquitoes, getting lost. He goes for the scenery, the
wildness, the silence, the peace. Curran works as a clinical
psychologist and lives with his wife and two children in Berlin,
Massachusetts. He is also the author of Hellgate Press's Canoe
Trip: North to Athabasca.
